This paper sets out to explore the experience of newly qualified community nurses, one year on in practice, and to establish if the specialist course prepares them for the reality of practice. It presents a piece of action research evaluating the education process for community nurses through a series of cycles of self-reflection which lead to recommendations for both policy and curriculum changes. Our findings show that community nurses are very positive about their new roles and their work with clients and patients, that they are able to use their newly acquired analytical skills in their pr

AIM: The aim of the study was to reach a more profound understanding, through looking at nurses' working situation, of those factors that influence how nurses are able to work together with family members of older people living in nursing homes or similar facilities.
BACKGROUND: Working with the care of older people as a Registered Nurse provides a varied job with many challenges. Nurses have to co-operate with family members of those in community health care. Co-operation is important and necessary for all involved.
DESIGN: Nurses working in elder care in a geographically defined area recei

Faecal incontinence, the involuntary loss of faeces, is a symptom with multifactorial causes and major effects on quality of life. Community nurses, with their skills and unique position at the frontline of patient care, are pivotal in the assessment and management of faecal incontinence and its associated conditions, such as moisture-associated skin damage, along with signposting across integrated continence pathways. Evidence-based care can meaningfully improve symptoms and patient dignity. The author reviews the research-backed interventions available to nurses seeking to alleviate the sham

The community health faculty has developed a creative and comprehensive approach with community agencies to present bioterrorism content that could be useful to community health faculty in other schools of nursing. Since September 11, 2001, the United States has recognized that the threat of bioterrorism is real. Nurses are recognized by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing as key players in disaster response efforts. However, bioterrorism knowledge among nurses and nursing students has been reported to be low, and textbooks do not include comprehensive information about bioterroris

Over the past decade, nurse prescribing in the community has improved clinical care, providing timely access to many products required for patients to receive appropriate treatment. Until recently, nurses who have qualified as nurse prescribers have only been able to prescribe from a limited list of products. Within the leg ulcer clinic environment, the majority of prescriptions written have been related to wound care. This article describes the introduction of extended independent prescribing (now known as non-medical prescribing) and how this type of prescribing has scope for revolutionizing

This group of Vermont community health nurses from different agencies collaborated to develop a competence validation framework for maternal and child health nursing in the practice areas of perinatal client teaching, breastfeeding, and prenatal, postpartum, and newborn nursing care. The framework is based on the work of Benner, using the "competent" level of nursing practice, and delineates three parameters of competence: technical skills, interpersonal skills, and critical thinking skills. Learning resource materials, including newborn and maternal assessment guidelines, were developed for e

This paper is highly relevant to mental health nursing because it highlights the critical role of psychiatric and mental health nurses in addressing the intersection between homelessness, social exclusion, mental health crisis and substance-use problems. It emphasises that nurses are not only involved in crisis assessment and clinical care, but also in outreach, trauma-informed communication, continuity of medication, discharge planning, family engagement and coordination with community and social services. By proposing integrated, low-threshold and community-based crisis pathways in Indonesia

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence is high in the mental health population. We sought to evaluate testing and treatment uptake for HCV following the implementation of a universal nurse led study in inpatient and outpatient mental health populations.
METHODS: From January 2018 to December 2020, we screened mental health inpatients (n = 322) and community mental health patients (n = 615) for HCV with either specialist hepatology nurses or mental health nurses (mental health nurse).
RESULTS: 75.5% (464/615) of community patients and 100% (322/322) of inpatients consented to screen

The Korean government introduced CHPs (Community Health Practitioners) as front-line primary health care providers to address the health disparity between urban and rural areas. Through their dedicated contribution over last 30 years, the CHPs have improved Korea's public health through the successful control of high birth rates, a lowered maternal and infant mortality rate in the 1980s, eradication of parasitic infection, and containing many communicable diseases including hepatitis B. However, rapid changes in the health care environment and demands for health care among rural residents have

Rural and remote Indigenous communities face unique challenges, and they must drive solutions for sustaining and maintaining distinct nursing practices. Resourcing Indigenous community needs and aspirations for health depends on sustainable funding and an appropriately resourced nursing workforce. An Indigenous community-engaged research team led a program of study exploring Indigenous systems of care with three distinct communities. We used Indigenous research methodologies to identify obstacles to care and ways to advance nursing and healthcare delivery according to unique values and demogra

AIM: Little is known about the working practices of community children's nurses and how they manage the complexities of working with children and young people with life-limiting, life-threatening and chronic ill-health conditions and their families. This action research project aimed to find ways of managing community children's nursing caseloads that would improve the efficiency, effectiveness and equity of services and inform negotiations with service commissioners.
METHODS: A data collection template comprising six input categories was adapted from the Cornwall Community Trust's health vis

AIM: To explore community nurses' experiences of changes to their roles in palliative and end-of-life care.
DESIGN: An e-survey was followed by focus groups.
METHODS: Fifty-one community nurses with recent experience of delivering end-of-life care in the United Kingdom completed a survey about changes to their roles. A purposive sample of 35 respondents participated in focus groups exploring these changes in more depth; thematic analysis was used with constant comparison.
RESULTS: As well as two new roles-prescribing and verifying death-many participants talked about a broader expansion of

Recognizing the importance of health-promoting relationships in engaging people who are experiencing homelessness in care, most research on health clinics for homeless persons has involved some recognition of client-provider relationships. However, what has been lacking is the inclusion of a critical analysis of the policy context in which relationships are enacted. In this paper, we question how client-provider relationships are enacted within the culture of community care with people who are experiencing homelessness and how clinic-level and broader social and health policies shape relations

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence is high in Ghana-but awareness, prevention, and treatment is sparse, particularly in rural regions. The nurse-led Community-based Health Planning and Services program offers general preventive and primary care in these areas, but overlooks CVD and its risk factors.
METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews with 30 community members (CM) in rural Navrongo, Ghana to understand their knowledge and beliefs regarding the causes and treatment of CVD and the potential role of community nurses in rendering CVD care. We transcribed audio records, cod

Introduction Participation is a central outcome in community-based rehabilitation, particularly in aging societies where social isolation among older adults is increasing. Community nurses have emerged as key facilitators of social participation in community settings. However, the mechanisms through which community nurses reconstruct participation in everyday practice remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to clarify how community nurses reconstruct and facilitate participation in community-based rehabilitation. Methods This retrospective qualitative study analyzed activity logs an

Nurses in South Korea experience high work intensity and poor working environments, which worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to evaluate the work changes and grievances of nurses who provided direct care for patients at tertiary hospitals during the pandemic. The nurses' perceptions of their organizational culture and its impact on nurses' health were also explored. A three-round Delphi study was conducted with 36 expert group participants from six South Korean tertiary hospitals. Overall, 36, 35, and 33 participants responded in the first, second, and third rounds, respec
