OBJECTIVE: To compare left lateral, right lateral, and prone nursing positions of neonate for reducing pre-feed gastric residuals among ≤34 weeks neonates.
DESIGN: Randomized crossover trial.
SETTING: Level-III NICU.
PARTICIPANTS: Neonates ≤34 weeks, receiving 50-150 mL/kg/day feeds through oro-gastric route.
INTERVENTION: Neonates were randomized to left lateral, right lateral and prone positions. Intervention position was given for eight hours (4 feeds, 9AM to 5PM) followed by a wash-off period of 16 hours. After 24 hours, each neonate crossed over to next position as per randomization c

Faecal colonization patterns were studied in 22 neonatal special care units (N = 953 babies) using a novel method for typing of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp. and Enterobacter spp. isolates. Sporadic strains of E. coli (found in only one infant in a ward) were taken to indicate natural colonization, whereas local spread of E. coli strains or colonization with sporadic or spreading strains of Klebsiella spp. and Enterobacter spp. was regarded as abnormal (non-maternal) colonization. All apparent risk factors for abnormal neonatal colonization with enteric bacteria identified were modifiable

BACKGROUND: Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses face substantial psychological challenges. Work alienation - emotional disconnection from work - is a potential occupational concern with limited empirical attention. Left unaddressed, it may be associated with care quality and workforce stability.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate work alienation as an occupational concern and explore its associations with professional quality of life (ProQoL) components: compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS), among NICU nurses.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 188 nurs

BACKGROUND: Developmental positioning that performed by nurses plays a critical role in minimizing complications associated with prematurity and promoting overall neonatal health. Enhancing nurses' knowledge and skills through structured training programs can substantially improve the quality of neonatal care. This study aimed to examine the effect of a comprehensive developmental positioning training program on nurses' performance and the comfort of preterm infants hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
METHODS: This quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest study was conducted

BACKGROUND: In low-and middle-income countries inadequate neonatal pain management persists as a significant public health issue despite the availability of guidelines. Newborns often experience pain from routine medical and surgical procedures, with limited nurses' knowledge and suboptimal practices posing common obstacles to effective neonatal pain management in hospital settings. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate nurses' knowledge and practices related to neonatal pain management and the factors influencing them in public hospitals in West Oromia, Ethiopia, in 2022.
METHODS: A multicente

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers (HCWs) wash their hands with tap water (TW) and soap. However, hard TW causes dermatitis.
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to compare the effects of ultra-pure soft water (UPSW) with those of TW on the hands of HWCs.
METHODS: The present study was a prospective randomized trial with a crossover design. All the nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the study centre were divided into Sequence 1 (UPSW to TW) or 2 (TW to UPSW) and washed their hands with TW or UPSW in alternating 4-week periods with a 4-week washout period. BACKGROUND: In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), nurses care for premature and critically ill neonates, interact with parents, and make clinical decisions regarding the treatment of neonates in life-threatening conditions. The challenges of managing unstable conditions and resuscitation decisions can cause moral distress in nurses.
PURPOSE: This study aims to determine the relationship between clinical decision-making and moral distress in NICU nurses.
METHODS: This cross-sectional, multicenter, descriptive correlational study involved 190 nurses working in 7 NICUs across hospitals in

Neonatal seizures are high-risk clinical events that require rapid recognition but present subtle symptoms. Although simulation-based education supports clinical competence, the use of escape-room-based approaches in neonatal nursing education remains underexplored. The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of nursing students regarding escape room-based simulation for managing neonatal seizure scenarios. This descriptive qualitative study involved 8 undergraduate nursing students engaged in a 5-stage escape-room simulation using a high-fidelity neonatal simulator (Super Tory S2220,

Faced by a severe shortage of nurses and increasing demand for care, hospitals need to optimally determine their staffing levels. Ideally, nurses should be staffed to those shifts where they generate the highest positive value for the quality of healthcare. This paper develops an approach that identifies the incremental benefit of staffing an additional nurse depending on the patient mix. Based on the reasoning that timely fulfillment of care demand is essential for the healthcare process and its quality in the critical care setting, we propose to measure the incremental benefit of staffing an

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants must spend a few days to several months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in order to learn how to synchronize their breathing, sucking, and swallowing in order to achieve safe and successful oral feedings because their digestive, respiratory, and central nervous systems are still developing. The transition period from gavage to fully autonomous oral feedings is shortened by an oral stimulation program, which also enhances the growth velocity and oro-motor skills.
METHODS AND MATERIAL: Using the nonprobability purposive sampling technique, 40 preterm babie

Developmental care (DC) mitigates the impact of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stressors on infants and their families. However, the effect of variable exposure to DC-educated nurses on infant and parent outcomes remains unclear. Social network analysis (SNA), which maps relationships and interaction patterns, was used to evaluate the influence of nurse DC education in a surgical NICU (sNICU). In this prospective observational study, 45 infants >34 weeks' gestation, their parents, and sNICU nurses participated. We examined associations between nurse DC education levels and infants' behavi

AIM: Identifying the severity of neonatal respiratory distress (RD) is essential, so that resources can be appropriately allocated. We assessed the ability of nurses to grade neonatal RD in a low-resource setting before and after they were trained to use a dedicated scoring tool.
METHODS: The study was conducted in the Special Care Unit of St Luke Wolisso Hospital, Ethiopia. Ten nurses reviewed nine local video recordings and graded neonatal RD without a standardised method, which was current practice, and then after they were trained to use the Silverman and Andersen score. The data were ana
