Current Practice of Palliative Sedation in Dutch Nursing Homes.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate current practices regarding palliative sedation in nursing homes. Despite being an essential component of palliative care, empirical data on its use are currently lacking. Understanding these practices can help improve care quality and support evidence-based policy development for end-of-life care. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of prescriptions for midazolam, propofol, levomepromazine, phenobarbital, and morphine within 14 days before death, used as a proxy for palliative sedation and to gain insight into the occurrence. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 672 n

Chronic fatigue syndrome in nursing practice: a concept analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are essential in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) management, serving as care coordinators and patient advocates, but currently lack a unified guiding framework. CFS affects about 0.89% of the global population based on CDC-1994 criteria, with higher prevalence in women. Since its initial definition in 1988, over 25 diagnostic criteria have been introduced, leading to ongoing confusion about core symptoms and diagnosis. This inconsistency poses significant challenges for nurses, including difficulties in patient identification, inconsistent assessment approaches, and lack of s

Nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice towards immobility complications.

BACKGROUND: High-quality preventive nursing care and improved patient safety outcomes are more likely to be achieved by nurses who are knowledgeable about the risks associated with immobility and the evidence-based strategies for preventing and managing immobility-related complications. However, previous studies have reported variations in nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding patient immobility and its complications across different healthcare settings, highlighting areas for potential improvement. This study aimed to assess nurses' Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) toward immobilit

Preventing bloodborne pathogen transmission in community nursing practice.

Community nurses face challenges while caring for patients with complex conditions, post-hospital recovery needs, or palliative care requirements, which increases their exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Inoculation injuries can transmit viruses such as hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and HIV. The risk of transmission depends on several factors, including the healthcare worker's immune status and vaccination history. Despite the high incidence of these injuries, the majority of those exposed do not develop serious illnesses. However, the financial impact of these injuries on the healthcar

Strategies for supporting neurodivergent nursing students in practice placements.

Neurodivergent conditions include autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia. An increasing number of people with these conditions are entering higher education. Neurodivergent nursing students may experience increased challenges during their practice placements and require reasonable adjustments to be made. Despite the best intentions of staff, these students' placement experiences and outcomes can be adversely affected, and without appropriate support they may become less likely to engage with some learning opportunities. Additionally, staff may not always have a cl

[Integrative medicine and nursing: a necessary opening in training and practice].

The majority of nurses have a favourable opinion of complementary therapies. This makes it easier to identify the therapies used by patients. Being trained in and practising a complementary therapy strengthens the nursing skills and helps to give it new meaning. Nurses must play an active part in the ongoing structuring of integrative medicine in France.

[Advanced practice nurses in geriatric traumatology : A scoping review].

BACKGROUND: Older and very old persons have an increased risk of traumatic injuries as well as comorbidities and multimorbidities. The standardized workflow in hospitals can increase the occurrence of typical geriatric complications, such as challenging behavior and delirium, which can result in highly complex care situations. The application of advanced practice nurses (APN) is an international response to such challenges. In Germany, the scientifically based development of APN has so far lagged behind the international standard. METHOD: For this scoping review, a systematic search in the da

[Deployment of advanced nursing practice in Île-de-France].

Advanced practice nurses (APNs) are finding it difficult to establish themselves once they have completed their training. Nearly half (49%) of graduates interviewed in a survey said they were not working as APNs, which raises real questions about the future of new graduates and their establishment in local areas. Under such conditions, the future of IPAs sometimes seems compromised, especially those in private practice.

Buprenorphine Treatment: Advanced Practice Nurses Add Capacity.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was slower growth in the number of new waivers authorizing clinicians to provide buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder. However, treatment capacity grew at a stable rate as a result of already authorized clinicians obtaining waivers for larger patient panels. Advanced practice nurses accounted for the largest portion of capacity growth during the pandemic.

An overview of buprenorphine prescribing for the advanced practice psychiatric nurse.

PURPOSE: Rates of at-risk opioid use, opioid use disorder, and opioid overdose remain alarmingly high. There are medications that can be used to treat opioid use disorder, including methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone, although access to care remains difficult. This review seeks to provide advanced practice psychiatric nurses (APPNs) with an overview of buprenorphine prescribing, with an emphasis on novel, long-acting delivery systems. CONCLUSIONS: APPNs should be familiar with best practices regarding buprenorphine prescribing. Some patients may benefit from long-acting delivery methods

The legacy of lymphedema: Impact on nursing practice and vascular access.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Breast cancer related lymphedema (BCRL) is a chronic condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid in tissues resulting in swelling of the upper limb or trunk after treatment. Lack of consensus on definition, classification and grading of BCRL has led to subjective and objective parameters estimating incidence and severity. Prospective studies estimate the risk of BCRL to be approximately 21.4% (14.9-29.8). In patients with axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), the estimated risk of 19% (13.5-28.2) was about four ti

Effect of poverty on eye health and implications for nursing practice.

Poverty is a global issue that affects the health and quality of life of millions of people. It predisposes people to many health conditions, including sight loss or blindness as a result of the immune system becoming compromised. Blindness is common in areas of the world where there is extreme poverty. In the UK, poverty has become a major social issue, contributing to many health problems, including eye conditions. These eye conditions can result in sight loss if they are not managed effectively. Psychosocial care is an essential aspect of patient care, because poverty and sight loss are int

Hemostatic agents: a guide to safe practice for perioperative nurses.

Perioperative hemostasis, the effective management of bleeding during operative and other invasive procedures, can involve the use of blood, blood products, and hemostatic agents to augment the patient's natural clotting abilities. Currently, more than 50 hemostatic products are available in the marketplace and dozens more are in development. It is important for perioperative nurses to understand each of the hemostatic agent categories and their actions, properties, applications, and limitations. This article provides an overview of the normal coagulation process (ie, clotting cascade) that is
