L-Cysteine: A promising nutritional supplement for alleviating anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders are prevalent chronic psychological disease with complex pathogenic mechanisms. Current anxiolytics have limited efficacy and numerous side effects in many anxiety patients, highlighting the urgent need for new therapies. Recent research has been focusing on nutritional supplements, particularly amino acids, as potential therapies for anxiety disorders. Among these, L-Cysteine plays a crucial role in various biological processes. L-Cysteine exhibits antioxidant properties that can enhance the antioxidant functions of the central nervous system (CNS). Furthermore, metabolites

Nutritional implications of selective eating in a child with autism spectrum disorder.

A 4-year-old boy attending the autism assessment service was identified to have a restricted diet. His food diary documented that he ate a narrow range of foods and consumed excessive quantities of carrot juice (excess 2.5 L daily). Physical examination showed that the boy had a florid orange discolouration of his skin, growth parameters were <91st centile for weight, >50th centile for height and head circumference. Blood investigations showed a raised serum carotene level and vitamin D deficiency. He was referred for urgent specialist input from dietetics and the other disciplines within the

The use of indirect calorimetry in the clinical management of adolescents with nutritional disorders.

Indirect calorimetry is a noninvasive, inexpensive technique used to determine resting energy expenditure. Its use provides the clinician with objective information that can be used to design, implement, and evaluate efficacy of treatment in the nutritional management of adolescents with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, chronic dieting behavior, and obesity. This chapter outlines the theoretical framework, interpretation of data, and clinical applications of indirect calorimetry and presents case examples to underscore its utility in adolescents with eating disorders.

Eating disorders: a review of the literature with emphasis on medical complications and clinical nutrition.

Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and atypical eating disorder (eating disorder not otherwise specified or NOS), are estimated to occur in 5-10 million young and adult women and one million males in the United States. The etiology of eating disorders is complex and appears to include predisposing genetic factors and serotonin dysregulation, as well as psychological factors that include a history of trauma and childhood sexual abuse. Both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are medical conditions complicated by multiple neuroendocrine dysfunc

Pleiotropic effects of GDF-15 to regulate nutritional status: perspectives from body composition to nutrition-related disorders.

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15), a stressful cytokine of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily, plays pivotal roles in diverse physiological and pathological processes. Most recently, its pleiotropic effects regarding energy metabolism and nutritional modulation are of intense scrutiny. Its physiological functions involve signaling pathways such as GDF-15/glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor family receptor α-like protein (GFRAL)/rearranged during transfection (RET), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), nuc

Nutritional factors (nutritional aspects) in biliary disorders: bile acid and lipid metabolism in gallstone diseases and pancreaticobiliary maljunction.

Nutritional factors play a key role in the pathogenesis of biliary diseases such as gallstones and pancreaticobiliary maljunction. Gallstones are primarily classified into cholesterol stone and pigment stone according to the major composition. Cholesterol gallstone formation is very likely based upon supersaturated bile formation, and pigment stones are formed in bile rich in bilirubin. Thus, defects of hepatic metabolism of lipids and organic anions lead to biliary stones. Here, the recent understanding of cholesterol gallstone pathogenesis is elaborated. On the other hand, there is another i

Adipose Tissue Aging and Metabolic Disorder, and the Impact of Nutritional Interventions.

Adipose tissue is the largest and most active endocrine organ, involved in regulating energy balance, glucose and lipid homeostasis and immune function. Adipose tissue aging processes are associated with brown adipose tissue whitening, white adipose tissue redistribution and ectopic deposition, resulting in an increase in age-related inflammatory factors, which then trigger a variety of metabolic syndromes, including diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Metabolic syndrome, in turn, is associated with increased inflammatory factors, all-cause mortality and cognitive impairment. There is a growing inter

Liver disorders in COVID-19, nutritional approaches and the use of phytochemicals.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has affected millions of people globally. It was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020. The hyperinflammatory response to the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into the host through angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 is the result of a "cytokine storm" and the high oxidative stress responsible for the associated symptomatology. Not only respiratory symptoms are reported, but gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea) and liver abnormalities (high lev

Relationships between nutritional knowledge, obesity, and sleep disorder severity.

Obstructive sleep apnea affects 20% of the adult population. Weight control is considered the best non-medical means of managing the condition, therefore improving nutritional knowledge in individuals may be an appropriate strategy. This study aimed to describe the relationship between nutritional knowledge and: (i) sleep disorder severity; (ii) body mass index; and (iii) demographic characteristics in persons suspected of obstructive sleep apnea. Nutrition knowledge scores were also compared with the general population. Consecutive newly-referred patients attending the sleep laboratory for di
