Occupational safety and health in traditional date palm works.

OBJECTIVE: Date palm is mostly cultivated in Western Asia and North Africa and is the main wealth for the people of these regions. Traditional date palm crown access via manual climbing, as the main activity in date fruit production, suffers from occupational hazards. Mitigation of these problems through interventions or new designs initially needs to complete knowledge of safety and health aspects and relationships between them and characters of date palm climbers. This study provided detailed information about this concern. METHODS: A questionnaire consisting of personal, operational, safet

Nonstandard workers and differential occupational safety and health vulnerabilities.

BACKGROUND: Permanent jobs are in decline world-wide, and are being replaced with temporary, casual, part-time, and contract jobs. We investigated the characteristics and occupational safety and health (OSH) vulnerabilities of workers with nonstandard and standard employment. METHODS: We used the Korean Working Conditions Survey of 2017 to compare working conditions and OSH vulnerabilities of workers with standard and nonstandard employment in five major job categories. RESULTS: Workers with nonstandard employment were older, less educated, had lower monthly incomes, were employed in smaller

[Identification of environmental Actinobacteria representing an occupational health risk].

Actinobacteria, the etiologic agents of tuberculosis, actinomycosis, respiratory infections and pathological skin lesions, are also classified as hazardous biological agents at the workplace. An increased number of Actinobacteria primarily occurs at the workplaces in composting plants, agriculture, waste management facilities, libraries and museums. Robust identification of Actinobacteria requires a polyphasic diagnostic strategy including an assessment of morphological, physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic features as well as genotyping. Commercially available diagnostic kits often d

Occupational health injuries: a brief review of three disorders.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, NIHL, and work-related hernias are preventable occupational injuries that result in decreased productivity because of lost workdays. The treatment paradigm focuses almost exclusively on preventing further loss or injury through employee education. There is a dearth of studies related to NIHL and hernias. These areas should provide a fertile ground for nurse researchers who are interested in improving occupational health outcomes for the nation's work force by being part of an interdisciplinary team that investigates these areas of concern. The key is that prevention is …

Occupational stress and constructive thinking: health and job satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Occupational stress is associated with specific situations, characteristics of the work environment, and individual perceptions and reactions in the context of the workplace, but many nursing studies of occupational stress have tended to analyse aspects related to the job itself. In Brazil nursing is acknowledged as a stressful occupation whose stresses are generally associated with the job itself, while the effects of personal characteristics on an individual's response to occupational stress are dismissed. AIMS: The aim of this paper is to describe: (1) occupational stress, job

Occupational exposure to ultraviolet radiation: a health risk assessment.

This review applies health risk assessment methodology to the subject of occupational exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Ultraviolet radiation is produced by many sources, and for most people the sun is their main source of exposure. In the occupational environment, there are also many artificial sources, of which welding arcs are the predominant and most intense. Adverse health effects include photokeratitis, erythema, pterygium, some types of cataract, non-melanocytic skin cancer, and malignant melanoma. Outdoor workers and workers who are exposed to certain artificial sources (particu

Climatic stress in coalmining in Germany: occupational health aspects.

Coalmining in Germany is performed in depths as low as 1400 m. Owing to an average thermal gradient of 30 m/K the work underground is burdened by heat stress to which occupational medicine must pay special attention. Therefore heat stress standards and mining safety regulations have been set up not only for coal production but also for mine rescue activities. This specific situation of heat burdened work in the coal mining industry in Germany is discussed under the specific aspects of German coalmining regulations (Klima-Bergverordnung und Plan für das Grubenrettungswesen).

Occupational health problems and adverse patient reactions in orthodontics.

The purpose of the present investigation was to study the nature and frequency of adverse reactions to materials and procedures among orthodontists and their patients. A questionnaire about this topic was mailed to practicing members of the Norwegian Orthodontic Society, of which 137 (about 75%) responded together with 127 chairside assistants. About half of the orthodontic personnel had experienced adverse reactions. The majority of the problems were dermatoses, comprising dryness, redness, itching, thickening, reduced tactile sensitivity, fissuring, soreness/desquamation and pain of hands an

Occupational therapy education in health promotion and disease prevention.

Educational experiences and didactic materials on health promotion are necessary for occupational therapists to remain current in the profession. This paper reviews health promotion learning experiences to determine the "state of the art" in this important area. It was found that few papers or workshops have been given at recent AOTA Annual Conferences; five universities received Allied Health Grants, which included occupational therapists, to develop health promotion learning materials; and occupational therapy educational curricula for the most part do include something on health promotion.

Occupational chemical exposures: a collaboration between the Georgia Poison Center and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

CONTEXT: In the United States, regional poison centers frequently receive calls about toxic workplace exposures. Most poison centers do not share call details routinely with governmental regulatory agencies. Worker health and safety could be enhanced if regulators such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had the ability to investigate these events and prevent similar incidents. With this goal in mind, the Georgia Poison Center (GPC) began referring occupational exposures to OSHA in July 2014. METHODS: GPC began collecting additional employer details when handling occup

Self-Reported Occupational Injuries and Perceived Occupational Health Problems among Latino Immigrant Swine Confinement Workers in Missouri.

Swine production has changed dramatically, and in the United States production often takes place in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Because of the size and density of these types of facilities, workers may be exposed to serious occupational health risks such as noxious gases, agricultural dusts, elevated noise levels, and zoonotic diseases. This descriptive study examines self-reported occupational injuries and perceived occupational health problems among a convenience sample of 40 Latino immigrant swine confinement workers (92.5% male; M age = 36.1 years; SD = 10.0) in Missour…
