Adaptive optics is a technology enhancing the visual performance of an optical system by correcting its optical aberrations. Adaptive optics have already enabled several breakthroughs in the field of visual sciences, such as improvement of visual acuity in normal and diseased eyes beyond physiologic limits, and the correction of presbyopia. Adaptive optics technology also provides high-resolution, in vivo imaging of the retina that may eventually help to detect the onset of retinal conditions at an early stage and provide better assessment of treatment efficacy.

Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder associated with not only cognitive dysfunctions, such as memory and attention deficits, but also changes in basic sensory processing. Although most studies on schizophrenia have focused on disturbances in higher-order brain functions associated with the prefrontal cortex or frontal cortex, recent investigations have also reported abnormalities in low-level sensory processes, such as the visual system. At very early stages of the disease, schizophrenia patients frequently describe in detail symptoms of a disturbance in various aspects of visual percept

PURPOSE: The purpose of this review was to update the practicing ophthalmologist on the English language neuro-ophthalmology literature from the past year.
DESIGN: A review of English language literature from August 1, 2013, to August 1, 2014, was conducted.
METHODS: The author searched PubMed from August 1, 2013, to August 1, 2014, limited to English language publications including original articles, review articles, and case reports and excluding letters to the editor, unpublished work, and abstracts. The following topics were searched: pupillary abnormalities, eye movement dysfunction, ne…

A complete neuro-ophthalmologic assessment is relatively simple, requires minimal instrumentation and should be performed as part of every complete ophthalmic and neurologic examination. This article has summarized the tests that comprise and the species-specific details of the complete neuro-ophthalmologic of the equine patient. Selected causes of sudden blindness in the horse were summarized and some common neuro-ophthalmic conditions with significant ophthalmic consequences, such as facial nerve paralysis, were discussed. Split-lid tarsorrhaphies, which are indicated but rarely used in case

Multidrug-resistant bacteria have emerged as an increasing threat in many areas of medicine. The most prominent multidrug-resistant pathogens are methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant MRSA (VMRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), and Enterobacteriaceae with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL). In particular, MRSA and VRE cause infections seen in ophthalmology. The lids, lacrimal duct, and ocular surface are frequently involved.

The modern imaging era has introduced a variety of techniques that aid in the evaluation of complex neurologic problems. To optimize the yield of neuroimaging the clinician must, first and foremost, determine the nature of the neuro-ophthalmic disorder; and then localize the lesion. Once the localization of the neuro-ophthalmic problem is understood, the optimal imaging modality can be directed toward the anatomic region of interest. In this article the approach to neuroimaging is discussed, with emphasis on the anatomic localization of lesions affecting afferent and efferent visual function.

Evaluation of horses for eye problems and for suspected impairment of visual acuity often requires a thorough neuroophthalmic examination to be conducted. Along with a full ophthalmic evaluation, the results of such an examination should indicate the likely site of any lesion(s) accounting for blindness, miosis, mydriasis, anisocoria, Horner's syndrome, strabismus, facial paralysis and facial spasm, nystagmus and other signs of vestibular disease, and cerebellar disorders, that may be present. Such a thorough examination with guidance for correct interpretation of findings is given here.

Suturing is a time consuming task in ophthalmology and suture induced irritation and redness are frequent problems. Postoperative wound infection and corneal graft rejection are examples of possible suture related complications. To prevent these complications, ophthalmic surgeons are switching to sutureless surgery. A number of recent developments have established tissue adhesives like cyanoacrylate glue and fibrin glue as attractive alternatives to sutures. A possible and promising new application for tissue adhesives is to provide a platform for tissue engineering. Currently, tissue glue is …

It has been more than a year since ophthalmologists and scientists under Dr. Robin Ali's team at the Moorsfield Eye Hospital and the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London, successfully treated patients with a severely blinding disease, Leber's congenital amaurosis (LCA) using gene therapy. This success does not look to be transient, and this achievement in gene replacement therapy clinical trial for LCA has instilled hope in numerous families with patients suffering from this and similar retinal degenerative diseases, for whom restoration of lost vision has remained a distant d…

The devastating, blinding effects of diabetic retinopathy have been well publicized. Although individually less common, many neuro-ophthalmologic complications are also associated with diabetes. The vascular effects of diabetes contribute to nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy, vasculopathic cranial neuropathies, and strokes affecting both afferent visual function and ocular motility. The neuropathic effects of diabetes primarily affect pupillary function, and the immunosuppressive effects of diabetes predispose to certain infections, such as mucormycosis. Diabetes is also associated with n

Community ophthalmology requires a comprehensive approach for primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of all eye diseases like vitamin A deficiency, trachoma, measles, diabetic retinopathy, refractive errors, etc. Community ophthalmology is based on the principles of primary health care approach. Equitable distribution, community involvement, focus on prevention, appropriate technology and multisectorial approach are to name a few in primary health care approach. In India, National Programme for Trachoma Control was launched in 1963 and National Programme for Control of Blindness was launch…

The diagnosis of optic neuritis is based on clinical signs and symptoms. Ancillary testing has little medical value, but is helpful to evaluate the risk of developing multiple sclerosis and for counseling the patients. In contrast to the common belief, the usual therapy with oral prednisone may be harmful. Only megadose therapy with 1000 mg methylprednisolone/day accelerates the recovery of visual function. Similar therapy is suggested in idiopathic intracranial hypertension. In patients with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy only optic nerve decompression sheath surgery is help

Exposure of the human body to ambient pressures greater than that at sea level may result in various disorders, some of which have ocular manifestations. Additionally, some eye disorders and postoperative states may be adversely affected by the underwater environment or other hyperbaric exposures. The prevalence of recreational, military, and commercial diving, as well as the medical use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, requires that ophthalmologists be familiar with the effects of the hyperbaric environment on the normal and diseased eye. The ophthalmology and diving medical literatures were sur…

Perfluorocarbon liquids have been used to facilitate surgery in a wide variety of conditions, including proliferative vitreoretinopathy, giant retinal tears, drainage of suprachoroidal hemorrhages, diabetic traction, retinal detachments with a rhegmatogenous component, dislocated crystalline or intraocular lenses, and retinal detachment associated with choroidal coloboma. The clarity of perfluorocarbon liquids, with a refractive index close to that of water, allows the use of a conventional contact lens for vitreous surgery while the low viscosity facilitates tissue manipulation, injection, an

The ability to realize a microcatheter urokinase infusion in central retinal artery occlusion open new ways in therapy. It provides opportunity to realize in situ thrombolysis without well-known systemic side-effects. If started during the first hours after the occlusion, that therapy could be successful and give good visual prognosis.
