Earth's earliest atmospheres.

Earth is the one known example of an inhabited planet and to current knowledge the likeliest site of the one known origin of life. Here we discuss the origin of Earth's atmosphere and ocean and some of the environmental conditions of the early Earth as they may relate to the origin of life. A key punctuating event in the narrative is the Moon-forming impact, partly because it made Earth for a short time absolutely uninhabitable, and partly because it sets the boundary conditions for Earth's subsequent evolution. If life began on Earth, as opposed to having migrated here, it would have done so …

The challenge of distinguishing living from non-living entities.

The complexity and diversity inherent in living organisms have long been regarded as significant challenges to the formulation of a universally accepted definition of life. Life is manifested across diverse forms, characterized by properties such as growth, reproduction, responsiveness, adaptation, and homeostasis. However, these traits are not exclusively confined to living systems; they have also been observed, to varying extents, in certain non-living entities. As a result, the conceptual boundary between the living and the non-living has been rendered increasingly ambiguous. In this study,

Bridging two theoretical frameworks of autocatalysis: RAF sets and stoichiometric autocatalysis.

Autocatalysis lies at the heart of many (bio)chemical processes and is key to processes leading up to the origin of life. Two seemingly very different formalisms have emerged that define autocatalysis. Kauffman introduced collective autocatalysis to describe systems of molecules that mutually catalyze each other's formation, emphasizing the self-sustaining character of autocatalytic systems. This view is mathematically formalized in the theory of Reflexively Autocatalytic and Food-generated sets (RAF). In parallel, stoichiometric autocatalysis emerged from the theory of Chemical Reaction Netwo…

A Hadean timeline for the emergence of the RNA World.

Estimates for when life emerged on Earth range from ca. 3.8 Ga (Eoarchean) to the Hadean eon (≥4.0-4.5 Ga). Here, we conclude that a proposed early stage of life - the RNA World - appeared at ca. 4.33 Ga by tracking the near-surface thermal stability of key biomolecules comprising postulated RNA organisms. We apply a global three-dimensional numerical model to analyse the thermal evolution profile of Hadean crust in response to late accretion bombardment. Results show that frequent global sterilization events persisted up until about 4.4 Ga owing to hot ejecta deposition, rock vapour condensat

Planetary Impacts: Friend or Foe?

Planetary impact events have profoundly influenced the origin of life and the habitability of Earth in both constructive and destructive ways. The constructive effects of impacts include building Earth into a habitable world and providing the key ingredients for life, including carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and energy. The destructive effects of impacts include a cascade of transient environmental disruptions that were likely deleterious to life, such as the generation of extreme pressure and temperature conditions at the impact site, ocean vaporization, and ejection of material …

The alkaline solution to the emergence of life: energy, entropy and early evolution.

The Earth agglomerates and heats. Convection cells within the planetary interior expedite the cooling process. Volcanoes evolve steam, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and pyrophosphate. An acidulous Hadean ocean condenses from the carbon dioxide atmosphere. Dusts and stratospheric sulfurous smogs absorb a proportion of the Sun's rays. The cooled ocean leaks into the stressed crust and also convects. High temperature acid springs, coupled to magmatic plumes and spreading centers, emit iron, manganese, zinc, cobalt and nickel ions to the ocean. Away from the spreading centers cooler alkaline spri

Sonochemistry on primordial Earth--its potential role in prebiotic molecular evolution.

Sonochemical processes are known to occur in nature and have occurred ever since there was liquid water on Earth. We advance a hypothesis that complex carbonaceous compounds, the probable precursors of life, were produced from simple primordial molecules by sonochemical processes in breaking waves of primordial seas or oceans. Our calculations show that these processes were much more common on Earth than other pathways, suggested for the formation of prebiotic complex carbonaceous compounds. The high occurrence rate of sonochemical events in breaking sea waves and the qualitative difference be

Interfacial microenvironments enable abiotic ribonucleoside formation in micro- and nanoscale compartments.

The abiotic emergence of ribonucleosides remains a central challenge in origin-of-life research because ribonucleosides form inefficiently and are often unstable under prebiotically plausible conditions. Here we show that interfacial microenvironments within aqueous micro- and nanoscale compartments containing D-ribose, phosphoric acid, and nucleobases promote ribonucleoside formation by creating reaction-permissive physicochemical conditions independent of the specific compartment type. Across a diverse range of compartmentalized systems, including gas-oil-water micro/nanobubbles, gas-water m

Evolutionary Aspects of the Oxido-Reductive Network of Methylglyoxal.

In the chemoautotrophic theory for the origin of life, offered as an alternative to broth theory, the archaic reductive citric acid cycle operating without enzymes is in the center. The non-enzymatic (methyl)glyoxalase pathway has been suggested to be the anaplerotic route for the reductive citric acid cycle. In the recent years, much has been learned about methylglyoxal, but its importance in the metabolic machinery is still uncovered. If methylglyoxal had been essential participant of the early stage of evolution, then it is a legitimate question whether it might have played a role in the ea…

Phosphorylation, oligomerization and self-assembly in water under potential prebiotic conditions.

Prebiotic phosphorylation of (pre)biological substrates under aqueous conditions is a critical step in the origins of life. Previous investigations have had limited success and/or require unique environments that are incompatible with subsequent generation of the corresponding oligomers or higher-order structures. Here, we demonstrate that diamidophosphate (DAP)-a plausible prebiotic agent produced from trimetaphosphate-efficiently (amido)phosphorylates a wide variety of (pre)biological building blocks (nucleosides/tides, amino acids and lipid precursors) under aqueous (solution/paste) conditi

Atmospheric Nitrogen When Life Evolved on Earth.

The amount of nitrogen (N2) present in the atmosphere when life evolved on our planet is central for understanding the production of prebiotic molecules and, hence, is a fundamental quantity to constrain. Estimates of atmospheric molecular nitrogen partial surface pressures during the Archean, however, widely vary in the literature. In this study, we apply a model that combines newly gained insights into atmospheric escape, magma ocean duration, and outgassing evolution. Results suggest <420 mbar surface molecular nitrogen at the time when life originated, which is much lower compared with est

A role for phosphorus redox in emerging and modern biochemistry.

Phosphorus is a major biogeochemical element controlling growth in many ecosystems. It has presumably been an important element since the onset of life. In most chemical and biochemical considerations, phosphorus is synonymous with phosphates, a pentavalent oxidation state that includes the phosphate backbone of DNA and RNA, as well as major metabolites such as ATP. However, redox processing of phosphates to phosphites and phosphonates, and to even lower oxidation states provides a work-around to many of the problems of prebiotic chemistry, including phosphorus's low solubility and poor reacti

From the one-carbon amide formamide to RNA all the steps are prebiotically possible.

Formamide provides the raw material and the reaction leads connecting hydrogen cyanide HCN chemistry with higher complexity molecular structures. Formamide is liquid between 4 and 210 °C and, upon heating in the presence of one of several catalysts, affords nucleic bases, acyclonucleosides, carboxylic acids and aminoacids. In formamide in the presence of a source of phosphate, nucleosides are non-fastidiously phosphorylated in every position of the sugar residue, also yielding cyclic nucleotides. Guanine 3',5' cyclic nucleotide monophosphates polymerize to oligonucleotides, up to 30 nucleotide

Ribose Accumulation in Borate-Rich Prebiotic Environments.

Under the RNA first hypothesis for the origin of life, RNA that emerges from prebiotic chemistry performed both catalytic and informational roles. Ribose is the only sugar in RNA; thus, many have sought to understand how ribose might have emerged on a prebiotic Earth. Ribose can be formed from formaldehyde with small amounts of glycolaldehyde by formose-like processes. However, under the strongly alkaline conditions of the reaction, ribose is consumed as it is formed. Here, we show that borate significantly decreases the consumption of the ribose formed in the formose reaction, which results i…

Prebiotic chemical refugia: multifaceted scenario for the formation of biomolecules in primitive Earth.

The origin of life was a cosmic event happened on primitive Earth. A critical problem to better understand the origins of life in Earth is the search for chemical scenarios on which the basic building blocks of biological molecules could be produced. Classic works in pre-biotic chemistry frequently considered early Earth as an homogeneous atmosphere constituted by chemical elements such as methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), water (H2O), hydrogen (H2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Under that scenario, Stanley Miller was capable to produce amino acids and solved the question about the abiotic origin of…

Trivalent Phosphorus and Phosphines as Components of Biochemistry in Anoxic Environments.

Phosphorus is an essential element for all life on Earth, yet trivalent phosphorus (e.g., in phosphines) appears to be almost completely absent from biology. Instead phosphorus is utilized by life almost exclusively as phosphate, apart from a small contingent of other pentavalent phosphorus compounds containing structurally similar chemical groups. In this work, we address four previously stated arguments as to why life does not explore trivalent phosphorus: (1) precedent (lack of confirmed instances of trivalent phosphorus in biochemicals suggests that life does not have the means to exploit
