The mixed dentition phase of tooth eruption can continue for up to six years from the eruption of the permanent molars to the complete replacement of all deciduous teeth. Early intervention is indicated to intercept developing problems in function. This paper will discuss the treatment of ectopic eruption of maxillary first permanent molars with removable appliances and the correction of molar crossbites with fixed appliances.

The treatment of children presenting with a Class II division I malocclusion involves one of two approaches. The first provides treatment in two phases; one of intervention during the mixed dentition (phase I) followed by a second definitive course of appliance treatment in early adolescence (phase II). The second approach involves providing a single course of comprehensive therapy during adolescence. The debate for and against early treatment is discussed alongside key, clinically relevant evidence related to Class II division I malocclusions.

BACKGROUND: Anterior open bite is a challenging condition for pediatric dentists and orthodontists as it causes aesthetic, speech, feeding, and psychological problems; this emphasizes the need for early diagnosis and interception of this malocclusion.
AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of prefabricated metal-bonded tongue tamers and customized bonded spurs in the early treatment of anterior open bite.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of seventy-five children aged 7-9 years were assigned into three groups in which anterior open bite was treated using tongue tamers (group-I), customi

Condylar aplasia is a condition characterized by the complete lack of a condyle. It is a rare disease, most often associated with more complex syndromes such as Hemifacial Microsomia, Treacher-Collins and Goldenhar. In this article, we present the case of a young female patient (4.3 years) with an aplastic left condyle. She received early two-phase treatment: first, a functional appliance to stimulate condylar growth and, second, fixed multibracket therapy and Class II elastics to improve the occlusal relationship. Functional therapy lasted many years due to non-compliance. Intermediate radiog

Scleroderma is a rare abnormality in which fibrosis of the skin, subcutaneous tissues and muscle may occur. All forms of scleroderma are rare in childhood: the most common form is localized scleroderma. Localized scleroderma is often benign, but may cause significant deformity, if it occurs on the face or extends across joint surfaces. Structural changes may occur in the osseous tissue and result in mandibular joint restriction (pseudoankylosis) and facial and occlusal disharmonies. This article describes a case of facial linear scleroderma in a nine-year-old child and the treatment performed

Early orthodontic interventions are often initiated in the developing dentition to promote favourable developmental changes. Interceptive orthodontic can eliminate or reduce the severity of a developing malocclusion, the complexity of orthodontic treatment, overall treatment time and cost. The safest way to prevent future malocclusions from tooth loss is to place a space maintainer that is effective and durable. An appropriate use of space maintainer is advocated to hold the space until the eruption of permanent teeth. This case report describes the various changing trends in use of space main

Background: Dermatoglyphics is the study of various dermal configurations on the fingers, palms, and soles. These appear during the 12th week of intrauterine life and develop completely by the 24th week. It is said that they remain constant thereafter. The aim of the present study was to compare and assess the association of dermatoglyphic patterns between skeletal class I and skeletal class III malocclusion. Methods: Finger and palm prints were collected using the ink and roller method from 604 subjects who were divided into skeletal class I, class III with maxillary retrognathism and class I

Leeway space preservation in the mixed dentition is a well-documented method of space management. In the mandibular arch it may be saved for utilisation in the correction of minor anterior crowding by the placement of a passive lower lingual arch (LLA) during the transition from the mixed dentition to the permanent dentition.

The impacted canine is relatively common in incidence and can often lead to difficult treatment planning decisions. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging has improved diagnosis and treatment planning of impacted canines. In particular, this technology has allowed the clinician to accurately locate and visualize these teeth better than ever before, as well as greater appreciate the degree of damage to neighbouring teeth such as lateral incisors. Improved diagnosis and treatment planning with CBCT has therefore resulted in improved treatment outcomes. The objective of this presentation wi

The lip bumper is a vestibular functional appliance designed to extend bilaterally between the mandibular buccal tubes and contact the inner surface of the lower lip and cheeks. It functions to eliminate the pressure on the incisors, canines, and premolars, and to transmit distally directed forces to the molars. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term effects of the buccal shield modification of the lip bumper design on various mandibular dental arch parameters, as well as on the inclination of the mandibular incisors. Included in the present study were 44 consecutively treate

Recently, new strategies for treating class III malocclusions have appeared. Skeletal anchorage appears to reduce the dentoalveolar effects while maximising the orthopaedic effect in growing patients. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to examine the effectiveness of bone anchorage devices for interceptive treatment of skeletal class III malocclusions. Searches were made in the Pubmed, Embase, Scopus and Cochrane databases, as well as in a grey literature database, and were complemented by hand-searching. The criteria for eligibility were: patients who had undergone ort

The topic of this paper is to emphasize the strategy of occlusion management during childhood. The orthodontist intervenes during the mixed dentition period, for transversal and antero-posterior cross-bites, for vertical problems such as open-bites and deep-bites, but he also deals with habits and functional diseases. Treatment has to be simple and short. Most of the appliances are fixed. The author presents some clinical cases, and then defines "short-cuts" as steps of therapy that shorten the active treatment. To conclude, a case report emphasizes the fact that before any diagnosis based on

The occurrence of root resorption in orthodontically treated permanent incisors with partially formed roots was investigated using periapical radiographs taken before and after the orthodontic leveling in the mixed dentition. The mean age at the beginning of treatment was 9 years and the mean treatment time was 7.1 months. The findings showed that the orthodontic movement during root formation causes no root resorption. The longitudinal follow-up showed that incompletely formed roots developed normally.

Although all dentofacial deformities involve deviation of skeletal and dental units that require correction, the timing and method of treatment can vary considerably. Growth is a key consideration when managing dentofacial deformities, because it has a direct impact on the timing and method of management. Some deformities may be intercepted and managed during growth, whereas others can only be definitively managed after cessation of growth. This article focuses on clinical considerations of growth in managing dentofacial deformities, and discusses methods of growth evaluation and interceptive

Why does the eruption of some incisors cease when overbite has reached 3 mm and continue in other cases? Eruption stops only when an opposing force confronts it; normally, this is what occurs when incisors erupt into end-to-end occlusion. Tongue thrusting between molar teeth plays an etiological role only when it interferes with vertical dimension. Incisal overbite diminishes when incisal inclination increases: orthodontists can eliminate incisal overbite by inclining the anterior teeth labially. But a low interincisive angle is no assurance against relapse, because retention, to be reliable,
