Aminophosphine oxides and aminophosphonates are, in general, very stable compounds. However, following phosphorus-carbon bond cleavage in aqueous acidic media these compounds sometimes decompose to phosphonic acids derivatives (P(III)). Despite some controversy in the literature, careful analysis supported by theoretical studies leads to the conclusion that decomposition to P(III) derivatives proceeds via an elimination reaction.

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) can use oxygen and nitrite as electron acceptors. Nitrite reduction by Nitrosomonas is observed under three conditions: (i) hydrogen-dependent denitrification, (ii) anoxic ammonia oxidation with nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) and (iii) NO(x)-induced aerobic ammonia oxidation. This study investigated the distribution and diversity of epiphytes in London in relation to NO(x) using fine-scale atmospheric dispersion modelling. The survey recorded over 3000 epiphytes from 334 trees (Fraxinus excelsior) representing 74 lichen, 14 moss, 7 fungal and 3 algal species. There was a significant inverse relationship between diversity and NO(x). Diversity declined where NO(x) exceeded 70 microg m(-3) and NO2 exceeded 40 microg m(-3), suggesting a phytotoxic effect. Electroacoustic method was used to measure the zeta potentials of mineral oxides and calcium carbonate in artificial sea water (pH 8), and the following values were obtained: synthetic hematite: 0.87 mV; goethite: 1.01 mV; fumed silica: -3.56 mV; quartz: -1.38 mV; calcium carbonate: 1.91 mV. Xanthine (Xan) and oxanine (Oxa) are the major deamination products of guanine formed by the treatment with nitrogen oxides (e.g., NO and HNO2). In this study, 2'-deoxyribonucleoside 5'-triphosphates of Xan and Oxa were prepared by the NaNO2 treatment of dGTP. These modified nucleotides were incorporated into oligonucleotides by DNA polymerase reactions. The repair activities of various DNA N-glycosylases for Xan and Oxa were examined using these substrates.
