The plasma concentrations of oxytocin and 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) were measured in serial samples collected during the first stage of spontaneous and oxytocin-induced labor in 17 and 15 women, respectively. The use of high bolus doses (e.g., 10IU of oxytocin) can determine deleterious cardiovascular changes for the patient, especially in situations of hypovolemia or low cardiac reserve. Furthermore, high doses of oxytocin for prolonged periods may lead to desensitization of oxytocin receptors in myometrium, resulting in clinical inefficiency.
