Adipose tissue has long been regarded as a passive type of connective tissue that stores energy as triglycerides and releases energy as free fatty acids, however, this point of view has now changed. The wide variety of products expressed and secreted by adipose tissue, such as adiponectin, leptin, and resistin, mean that the total adipose tissue mass can be defined as a real endocrine organ. The anatomic, metabolic and biochemical characteristics of visceral adipose tissue make it interesting in the context of intestinal and mesenteric diseases. These characteristics include increased lipolysi

A patient with an inflammatory fibrous tumor of the mesenteric fat tissue is reported. Clinical signs were epigastric pain, weight loss and palpable abdominal mass. diagnosis was by abdominal CT and surgical biopsy. The histological feature was diffuse fibrosis. Isolated mesenteric fibrosis is a rare variety of systemic idiopathic fibrosis, a disease entity including fibrosis of the retroperitoneum and other sites. Among possible etiological factors an autoimmune origin, drugs (methysergide) and lymphatic obstruction are discussed. Our patient had congenital hypoplasia of the lymphatic drainag

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing peritonitis is a rare, life-threatening complication of peritonitis involving inflammation and necrosis of the peritoneal lining. We report a unique case of necrotizing peritonitis following laparoscopic feeding jejunostomy in a patient with esophageal carcinoma. With a limited number of cases reported due to its rarity, this case highlights the importance of recognition of aberrant postoperative complications and early surgical intervention.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of a 50-year-old woman with distal esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who underwent l

Pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma (PACC) is a rare pancreatic tumor, with an estimated frequency of less than 1% of pancreatic malignancies. There are no prospective studies to guide diagnostic or therapeutic algorithms. We report the case of a 36 year-old woman, diagnosed of a pancreatic tumor with liver and peritoneal metastases that was initially managed as a neuroendocrine tumor with temozolomide and capecitabine. After two cycles a severely painful arthritis developed in her left ankle with panniculitis and extensive fat necrosis, and CT scan demonstrated progressive disease. Pathology of

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a non-specific, localized inflammation at the mesentery of small intestines which often gets detected on computed tomography. An association with malignant neoplasms remains unclear. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the association of malignancy with MP.
METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases were searched for articles published from inception to 2020 that evaluated the association of malignant neoplasms with MP in comparison with control groups. Using random-effects method, a summary odds ratio

A 71-year-old man presented to this clinic for evaluation of an unclear abdominal tumor. He complained of abdominal pain, weight loss and motility disorders, which began some weeks previously. Ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) scans showed a large mesenterial space-occupying lesion with accompanying lymphadenopathy, slight accumulation of ascites and venous congestion. For confirmation of the suspected diagnosis of a sclerosing mesenteritis and exclusion of a lymphoma a laparoscopy was carried out with excision of tissue. The material was not adequately representative so that a laparotom

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare entity of benign features that affects the intestinal mesenteric fat tissue and can progress in different ways, from spontaneous resolution to fibrosis. The etiology is still uncertain, probably caused by trauma, infection or surgery. We report a case of a 64-year-old male patient who suddenly began with abdominal pain and leukocytosis. Diagnosis of mesenteric panniculitis was made by a CT scan and the patient evolved with spontaneous resolution within two months.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare, benign, and chronic fibrosing inflammatory disease of the mesenteric fatty tissue. Its aetiology is unknown. In the present report we describe a 56-year-old women who presented with postprandial abdominal pain, and weight loss. Ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mesenteric mass of 15 cm. The findings were typical for this disease. Additionally the patient underwent a single ballon enteroscopy in which the mucosa showed a considerable hyperergic reaction. The histological examination of the ileum was appropriate to suppo

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare disease involving the adipose tissue of the mesentery. We report a case of a 27-year-old woman with mesenteric panniculitis, who presented clinical and radiological features mimicking Crohn's disease. In the outcome, she presented a small bowel perforation, unusual in this pathology, and an annexial involvement. This case reminds us of the role of sepsis and repeated abdominal surgery in relation to the pathogenesis of mesenteric panniculitis. We report the first case of mesenteric panniculitis mimicking Crohn's disease.

A 40-yr-old man was admitted for fever of unknown origin. Mesenteric panniculitis was suspected as a result of ultrasonography, computed tomography, and nuclear magnetic resonance findings, and that diagnosis was confirmed by laparoscopy with retroperitoneal mass biopsy. Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare disease characterized by an inflammatory process of the mesenteric adipose tissue. Abdominal pain, weight loss, and abdominal mass are the most frequent symptoms. High fever and leukocytosis are uncommon. To the best of our knowledge, only two reports of mesenteric panniculitis presenting as f

BACKGROUND: Metastatic disease of a urinary bladder cancer localized in the upper abdomen is very rare. This case report describes the first patient with a urinary bladder cancer progression, initially presenting as a gastric outlet obstruction due to peritoneal carcinomatosis.
CASE: We present the case of a 78-years-old male patient who was admitted to Hospital St. Josef Braunau in Austria with persistent vomiting. In the medical history, the most prominent finding was a diagnosed high-risk NMIBC. At the time, patient was between 2. and 3. BCG maintenance instillation cycle, following two tr

A 67-year-old man with previous cardiovascular disease was referred to our consultation due to a 5-month history of recurrent epigastric pain. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and full blood workup presented no alterations. CT scan showed an irregularly shaped mass at the root of the mesentery, measuring 40x25x47mm, with spiculated contours and retractile behaviour (a). Simultaneous densification of the adjacent fat and infracentimetric ganglionic formations scattered throughout the mesentery were shown. Surgical biopsy revealed extensive storiform fibrosclerosis, with the presence of interstitial l

Mesenteric panniculitis is a nonspecific inflammation involving the mesentery. Its clinical presentation is variable depending on the stage of the disease. Clinical signs are usually pain but half of the patients remain asymptomatic. Palpable abdominal mass, weight loss, nausea and vomiting. There may be an inflammatory syndrome of variable intensity. Panniculitis is suspected based on scan showing hyperdense mesentery with adhesions to adjacent organs. Histologically there is adipocyte degeneration causing foreign body reaction and appear lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory lesions. We report a ne

BACKGROUND: Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a nonatheromatous, noninflammatory arterial disorder of unknown etiology resulting in vessel stenosis and/or aneurysm formation. The renal and cephalocervical (mainly carotid arteries) arterial beds are classically involved; involvement of visceral arteries is rare. Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is an inflammatory process of mesenteric fat considered to be of unknown etiology. The majority of cases involve the small bowel mesentery; colorectal MP is rare. To our knowledge, no example of MP due to FMD has been described.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 52 year
