On a long-term basis, the epithelium of pectoralis major flaps incorporated in the mouth and the oropharynx is macroscopically and microscopically very similar to the sourrounding mucosa. Light microscope and electro microscopic investigations show that the type of keratinization of the epithelium of this flap has changed from orthokeratosis to parakeratosis which is typical for the mucosa of the mouth. The possible reasons for these changes, which, to our knowledge, have not been described before, are discussed.

A 30-year-old man presented with multiple keratotic papules on palms and soles. The lesions started at the age of 15 from soles. Family history was positive with members in preceding two generations being affected. Cutaneous examination revealed multiple discrete hyperkeratotic papules of variable size on palms and soles. Parakeratosis was absent in histopathology and this ruled out the diagnosis of porokeratosis punctata palmaris et plantaris.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the findings in gynecologic smears from 29 patients with biopsy-proven vulvar, vaginal or perineal lichen sclerosus.
STUDY DESIGN: The computerized database of the surgical pathology division of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania was searched for the diagnosis of lichen sclerosus from the years 1989-1992. Once these patients were identified, a search for all associated gynecologic material, including cytologic smears, biopsies and resections, was conducted. All the corresponding slides were obtained from the files and reviewed.
RESULTS: Parakeratosis was pr…

The epithelial lining of odontogenic keratocysts exhibits either parakeratosis or orthokeratosis. In 2005, the WHO classified odontogenic keratocysts with parakeratosis as keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOT). Odontogenic keratocysts with orthokeratosis were not classified as odontogenic tumors, but instead referred to as orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts (OOC). To clarify the difference between these two lesions, we investigated their biological characteristics using immunohistochemical studies for cytokeratins (CK) in KCOT and OOC as well as in dentigerous cysts (DC), radicular cysts (RC)…

We compared morphologic features of keratohyalin granules (KHG) that were directly related to keratinization in oral mucosa (tongue, cheek, gums, palate; n = 4) with those in parakeratotic epidermis (psoriasis, n = 2; pityriasis rubra pilaris, n = 1; acute dermatitis, n = 1) and normal orthokeratotic epidermis. Among others, the ultrastructural features of globular KHG were observed in the cheek, nonspecialized tongue mucosa, and parakeratotic epidermis occurring in psoriasis, pityriasis rubra pilaris, and acute dermatitis, whereas gums and palate showed a mixture of characteristics, also rese

Seborrheic dermatitis was diagnosed in an adult, rhesus monkey presenting with erythematous, exfoliative and focally exudative skin lesions distributed over the perioral, perirhinal and brow regions of the face. Similar areas of involved skin also were observed on the extremities. Lesions appeared to be exacerbated during increased experimental utilization. Histopathologic changes in skin biopsy specimens of affected skin included acanthosis, parakeratosis, spongiotic edema, vascular ectasia, and mild lymphohistiocytic infiltrates.

Structural reorganization of the buccal mucosa and changes in proliferative activity of epitheliocytes in typical and erosive ulcerative lichen planus were studied. The most manifest diagnostically significant pathomorphological signs of lichen planus of the buccal mucosa are described: acanthosis, granulosis, parakeratosis, lymphocytic infiltration of the lamina propria, and edema. The most pronounced morphological changes and higher index of epitheliocyte proliferative activity (by expression of Ki-67) are characteristic of the erosive ulcerative form of the disease.

Clinical cases of both Zn and Cu deficiencies are reported in a cattle farm in Kordofan Region of the Sudan after drought. The animals showed general weakness, stunted growth, infertility, parakeratosis and achromotrichia. There was macrocytic hypochromic anaemia and low Cu and Zn concentrations in sera. The condition was more prevalent in zebu-Friesian crosses than the local breeds. Drought and marginal or low Cu and Zn content in pasture may be the predisposing factors.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare, chronic, heterogeneous, papulosquamous inflammatory dermatosis of unknown etiology. Although erythematous scaly patches characterize the classic presentation of PRP, a broad range of clinical presentations has been reported. Histologically, PRP is characterized by psoriasiform acanthosis with alternating orthokeratosis and parakeratosis and rarely small acantholytic foci. In this article, we report a patient who presented with diffuse erythroderma and extensive acantholysis mimicking pemphigus vulgaris histologically.

A new mutation, affecting skin and hair, occurred in an expansion colony of Him:OF1 mice. Test crosses showed that a single autosomal recessive gene was responsible for this trait. Homozygotes have sparse greasy fur and lower viability and fertility than normal littermates. Histological observations showed hypertrophy of sebaceous glands, hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis, acanthosis and signs of inflammation. The disease was named 'inherited seborrheic dermatitis' and the gene name seb is proposed.

Greyish-white spots, varying in size, caused diagnostic problems in 2 patients with pre-invasive corneal carcinoma. Keratectomy specimens permitting light and electron microscopy indicated that the smaller spots predominating in one patient correlated with epithelial microcysts and vacuoles, while areas of parakeratosis accounted for the macroscopic white patches found in the other. A variety of ultrastructural abnormalities, including excessive basement membrane fibrillogenesis, were present in both cases.

In a study of 25 oral biopsy specimens of lesions of chronic discoid lupus erythematosus, a characteristic and diagnostic histopathological pattern was confirmed, which consisted of parakeratosis, hydropic degeneration of stratum germinativum, collagen degeneration and a lymphocytic infiltration in a perivascular orientation. It is suggested that more oral biopsies be used in the diagnosis of discoid lupus erythematosus because of the ease of oral mucosal biopsy technique and the absence of scarring and discomfort from oral biopsy lesions.

BACKGROUND: Zinc-responsive dermatosis, characterised by parakeratotic hyperkeratosis, is most commonly reported in Arctic breeds and, more recently, suspected in Boston terriers.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical and histological features of pinnal parakeratotic hyperkeratosis in French bulldogs, evaluate the response to zinc supplementation, and compare tissue zinc concentrations between affected and unaffected dogs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen French bulldogs with histologically confirmed parakeratotic hyperkeratosis were identified retrospectively across the United States. Follow-u

Spiny hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles is a rare dermatosis presenting as multiple tiny keratotic plugs on the palms and soles. There are two different forms of spiny keratoderma of the palms and soles - the hereditary form and the acquired form. The latter is usually associated with internal malignancies or systemic disease. Since spiny hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles has been under-reported and under-diagnosed, it is important for dermatologists not to forget this disease in daily practice. We report this rare disease for the first time in the German literature.
