Cleaning behaviour has generally been viewed from the cleaner or client's point of view. Few studies, however, have examined cleaning behaviour from the parasites' perspective, yet they are the equally-important third players in such associations. All three players are likely to have had their evolution affected by the association. As cleaner organisms are important predators of parasites, cleaners are likely to have an important effect on their prey. Little, however, is known of how parasites are affected by cleaning associations and the strategies that parasites use in response to cleaners. …

There are strong biological, evolutionary and immunological arguments for predicting extensive polymorphism among helminth parasites, but relatively little data and few instances from which the selective forces acting on parasite diversity can be discerned. The paucity of information on intraspecific variation stands in contrast to the fine detail with which helminth species have been delineated by morphological techniques, accentuating a trend towards considering laboratory strains as representative of a relatively invariant organism. However, in the fast-moving evolutionary race between host…

Parasites, causing little apparent damage in feral fish populations, may become causative agents of diseases of great importance in farmed fish, leading to pathological changes, decrease of fitness or reduction of the market value of fish. Despite considerable progress in fish parasitology in the last decades, major gaps still exist in the knowledge of taxonomy, biology, epizootiology and control of fish parasites, including such 'evergreens' as the ciliate Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, a causative agent of white spot disease, or proliferative kidney disease (PKD), one of the most economically…

Poultry now accounts for 30% of all meat consumed. Parasites are a problem where ever poultry are raised, whether in large commercial operations or in small back-yard flocks, and economic losses can be significant. This paper will briefly review the major protozoan, helminth, and arthropod species in poultry including pathogenesis. Other topics will include the importance of the interaction of other diseases and parasites, and control of the infection by chemotherapy, management, and immunity.

Parasitic protozoa have played a major role in the discovery of the HIV epidemic. It was the occurrence of clustered cases of Pneumocystis p … isting diarrhea leading to loss of fluid and electrolytes can be life-threatening. Another group of parasites previously unknown to infect humans are the microsporidia, which are wide-spread parasites in nature. Increasing numbers of such infections are observed but many questions regarding pathogenesis and epidemiology are still unclear.

Five hundred thirty-one stool samples obtained from primary schools. The age range was between 7 and 13 years, 49% of the patients were females an 51% of the patients males. In our study it has been observed that the parasite incidence was 36.9% the predominant parasite was Ascaris lumbricoides (12%), Giardia intestinalis (9%), Hymenolepis nana (7.1%) Entamoeba histolytica (6%) and Trichuris trichiura (2.6%) respectively, we detected six different parasites in the primary school students because of bad social status and environmental conditions.

Surface-labelling techniques have been used to delineate a number of constituent molecules of the cuticle in adult stage Brugia malayi and Brugia pahangi. These molecules can be separated by virtue of their physical properties, and localised either by sequential solubilisation of intact cuticles or immunoelectron microscopy with relevant antisera. The major structural components of the cuticular matrix consist of a set of collagenous proteins of diverse molecular weight ranging from 36 to 160 kDa, cross-linked by disulphide bonds and confined to the basal and inner cortical layers. Each stage

Birds from south-central Cameroon, western Africa, were surveyed for blood parasites from August to October 1986. Of 331 birds examined, representing 65 species of 15 families and 6 orders (mostly passerines), 55 (17%) were found to be infected with 1 or more genera of hemotropic parasites. These included: Haemoproteus spp. (11% prevalence), Leucocytozoon spp. (3%), Plasmodium spp. (2%), Trypanosoma spp. (1%), and microfilariae of filariid nematodes (1%). Several new host-parasite associations were identified.

Because of an apparent increase in the number of parasitic infections in Los Angeles, California, a six-month retrospective analysis of data obtained from patient stool examinations for parasitic infections in out-patient populations from two county health facilities in Los Angeles County was compared with a survey published in 1936 and 1960. A significant increase in the incidence of pathogenic intestinal protozoal parasites was found to occur in the areas surveyed. Giardia lamblia and nonpathogenic Endolimax nana occurred with the greatest frequency.

The survey was performed to study prevalence and intensity of parasitic infection in goats. Fecal samples were examined from 336 goats in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. On the basis of fecal egg, oocyst, and larval counts, the following results were obtained. Eimerian oocysts were found in 100% of the fecal samples and the greatest fecal oocyst counts were found in goats under 6 months of age. Strongyle eggs and Strongyloides eggs were present in 76% and 20%, respectively, of the samples. Moniezia eggs were found in 9%, Trichuris eggs in 4%, and Nematodirus eggs in 1% of the

Fifty patients with bronchial asthma and 50 normal controls were studied in Hacettepe University Medical Center. Forty per cent of the patients with bronchial asthma and 14% of the controls had ascarides in the stool examinations. The significant difference in these two groups indicates that intestinal parasites, should be looked for in the patients with bronchial asthma.

It has been claimed that parasitic infestation suppresses the development of asthma. Eight Tanzanian schoolchildren in whom asthma was confirmed by the demonstration of exercise-induced bronchospasm were found in an ascaris-endemic area of rural Tanzania. Faecal parasites were found equally commonly in the children with asthma and the ninety-seven non-asthmatic controls. The prevalence of asthma (3.3%) in the school under study was comparable with that found in developed countries.
