Cutaneous paraganglioma of the vertex in a child.

Paraganglioma is a neuroendocrine neoplasm that may develop at various body sites, including the head, neck, thorax, and abdomen. Approximately 85% of paragangliomas develop on the abdomen, 12% develop on the chest, and only 3% develop on the head and neck. These tumors are found in locations that parallel the sympathetic chain ganglion in the thoracolumbar regions and parasympathetic nervous system in craniosacral regions, and all head and neck paragangliomas arise from the parasympathetic nervous system. Although the skin has a rich neural network, it is devoid of ganglia. There has been onl…

Two cases of symptomatic cluster-like headache suggest the importance of sympathetic/parasympathetic balance.

Despite several reports on symptomatic cluster-like headache, there is no clear explanation of how different lesions thought to be causative are related to cluster-like headache. On the basis of two additional cases of symptomatic cluster headache, we discuss the possibility that an acute imbalance of the autonomic nervous system, namely a net overactivity of the parasympathetic system, may be able to trigger these headache attacks in patients who probably have an additional individual predisposition to react with a cluster-like headache. Such an imbalance can be due to an increase in parasymp

Disorders of the pupil.

Pupil size is determined by the interaction of the parasympathetic and the sympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic system conducts the light reaction with its major center in the dorsal midbrain. The sympathetic nervous system acts either directly on the dilator muscle (peripherally) or centrally by inhibiting the Edinger-Westphal nucleus. Psychosensory reactions are transmitted via the sympathetic system. The afferent input of the light reflex system in humans is characteristically wired, allowing a detailed analysis of a lesion of the afferent input. Even in humans a subgroup of gang

Heart rate recovery in migraine and tension-type headache.

OBJECTIVE: There are reports proposing that migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) may affect the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Abnormalities in both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system have been suggested in migraineurs. However, in TTH, reports on the ANS function are limited and only associated with sympathetic system. Techniques for evaluating parasympathetic activity are more limited when compared with sympathetic function. Hence, the aim of the study was to measure heart rate recovery (HRR), an index of vagal activity, in migraine, TTH, and control subjects. METHODS: Fort…

Sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation of adipose tissue: metabolic implications.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Adipose tissue is of fundamental importance for the integrative physiology of the body by serving metabolic and endocrine functions. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the functions of the autonomic innervation of adipose tissue. RECENT FINDINGS: Different lines of evidence from studies on the sympathetic or parasympathetic innervation of adipose tissue have indicated that the autonomic nervous system modulates the fundamental properties of adipose tissue function and biology at the cellular and molecular level. This is reflected in the modulation of lipolysis/lipoge

Cardiovascular effects of discrete intrahypothalamic and preoptic injections of bradykinin.

Blood pressure and heart rate were monitored during discrete injections of bradykinin (5 nmol; 100-300 nl) in the hypothalamus and preoptic area of halothane anesthetized rats. In the paraventricular nucleus, bradykinin produced bradycardia without effecting blood pressure. The decrease in heart rate was abolished by pretreatment with methylatropine (IP), suggesting that the parasympathetic nervous system mediates this response. In contrast, in the dorsomedial and posterior hypothalamic nuclei, bradykinin increased both heart rate and blood pressure; methylatropine pretreatment (but not adrena…

Effects of supine ergometer exercise on central and peripheral circulation in patients with ischemic heart disease.

[Purpose] To clarify the characteristics and safety of circulatory dynamics during supine ergometer exercise in patients with cardiac disease by examining autonomic nervous system activity and lower limb blood flow, and to compare these responses with those observed during seated ergometer exercise. [Participants and Methods] Ten patients with ischemic heart disease performed ergometer exercises in two positions, supine and seated at the anaerobic threshold level intensity. Measurements included lower limb blood flow, autonomic nervous activity, physiological indicators, and perceived exertion

Neuropeptides and nasal secretion.

Recent research has disclosed that neurotransmitters and neuropeptides released within the autonomic nervous system exert homeostatic control of nasal secretion. Although cholinergic and adrenergic influences have long been thought to be the predominant mechanisms, the nonadrenergic, noncholinergic responses may have more suitable, longer-lasting effects. Peptides from sensory nerves, such as calcitonin gene related peptide, substance P, and neurokinin A, may participate in axon response-mediated vasodilation and plasma extravasation. Substance P and gastrin releasing peptide may induce glandu

Hemorheology and heart rate variability: is there a relationship?

The aim of the present study was to test the relationships between hemorheology and autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in 23 sickle cell trait (SCT) carriers and 17 control subjects. Hemorheological parameters were assessed at rest. Nocturnal ANS activity was calculated from heart rate variability indices. Impairment was observed in both domains in SCT carriers as they showed higher blood viscosity, higher red blood cell rigidity and a lower index of oxygen supply to tissues, as well as lower ANS activity. The index of oxygen supply to tissues was positively correlated with some of the in

Sweating and vascular responses in the face: normal regulation and dysfunction in migraine, cluster headache and harlequin syndrome.

At least four neural mechanisms influence facial blood flow. Firstly, sympathetic vasoconstrictor fibres exert a tonic constrictor influence on the vasculature of the ears, lips and nose, and sparsely supply other parts of the face. Secondly, the sympathetic nervous system actively dilates the cutaneous vasculature of the face during heat stress and emotion. Thirdly, parasympathetic vasodilator reflexes in the facial and glossopharyngeal nerves increase blood flow to the exocrine glands and tissues of the eyes, nose and mouth when these tissues are irritated. Fourthly, axon reflexes release va

[Autonomic dysfunctions in acute intermittent porphyria].

A young woman with acute intermittent porphyria is described. She was admitted in a prolonged attack and had developed a flaccid quadriplegia. During the course she showed various manifestations of the autonomic nervous system, including pupils, gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system and others. On admission her pupils were equally mydriatic, and reacted to light sluggishly. Dilation of the pupils was seen when cocaine was instilled, but not when adrenalin. It was suggested that the parasympathetic control of pupils was disturbed. She complained repeatedly abdominal pain, nausea, vomiti

The sympathetic nervous system and heart failure.

Heart failure (HF) is a syndrome characterized by upregulation of the sympathetic nervous system and abnormal responsiveness of the parasympathetic nervous system. Studies in the 1980s and 1990s demonstrated that inhibition of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors improved symptoms and mortality in HF resulting from systolic dysfunction, thus providing a framework to consider the use of β-blockers for HF therapy, contrary to the prevailing wisdom of the time. Against this backdrop, this article reviews the contemporary understanding of the sympa…

[Afobazole effect on heart rate variability in rats with different behaviors in the "open field" test].

The course of cardiovascular diseases is known to depend upon vegetative nervous system condition. The heart rate variability is the quantitative indicator of vegetative nervous system activity. The emotional stress reaction in rats tested in the "open field" was assessed by measuring the heart rate variability, which allowed the chronotropic cardiac function to be studied in detail and showed which part of the vegetative system (either sympathetic or parasympathetic) prevails in animals with different phenotypes of the emotional stress reaction. In rats demonstrating different behaviors in th

[Ogilvie syndrome].

Ogilvie's syndrome is a rare condition with progressive dilatation of the proximal colon without mechanical obstruction. Untreated it can lead to coecal perforation, peritonitis and death. It develops in patients with medical or surgical complications, but can be idiopathic. Caesarean section is the most common preceding surgical procedure. An imbalance between the parasympathetic and the sympathetic innervation of the intestine is thought to be the cause. Trauma to the retroperitoneum, infections, bleeding and electrolyte disturbances, hormonal changes and medicamina are predisposing factors.

Heart rate variability analysis reveals a shift in autonomic balance towards an increase in parasympathetic tonus in boys with undescended testis.

AIM: Evaluations of sacs and cremaster muscles associated with undescended testis (UT) have revealed a decrease in sympathetic, but an increase in parasympathetic tonuses. Since the low frequency/high frequency power ratio obtained through spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) determines the sympatho-parasympathetic balance, the sympatho-parasympathetic balance as defined by HRV in healthy boys and in boys with UT were compared. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen healthy boys and 21 boys with UT presenting as an isolated anomaly were evaluated. Powers in low and high frequency bands we

Moreover, in patients with VWF, the contribution of the alpha-2 adrenergic mechanism is presumably larger than that in the patients without VWF.

Autonomic regulation of cystatin S gene expression in rat submandibular glands.

Innervation of rat submandibular and parotid glands by the autonomic nervous system regulates saliva volume, its rate of secretion and its c … ral parasympathectomy also reduces IPR-induced cystatin S gene expression, suggesting a role of the parasympathetic nervous system in its regulation. Experiments described in this paper suggest that similar factor(s) arising from both the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system simultaneously participate in IPR-induced cystatin S gene expression …

Neurodevelopment. Parasympathetic ganglia derive from Schwann cell precursors.

Neural crest cells migrate extensively and give rise to most of the peripheral nervous system, including sympathetic, parasympathetic, enteric, and dorsal root ganglia. We studied how parasympathetic ganglia form close to visceral organs and what their precursors are. We find that many cranial nerve-associated crest cells coexpress the pan-autonomic determinant Paired-like homeodomain 2b (Phox2b) together with markers of Schwann cell precursors. Some give rise to Schwann cells after down-regulation of PHOX2b. Others form parasympathetic ganglia after being guided to the site of ganglion format
