[An index for paresis and defective healing--an easily applied method for objectively determining therapeutic results in facial paresis (author's transl)].

Residuals of facial paralysis consist of a great variety of cosmetic and functional anomalies which differ in quality and/or quantity. An internationally standardized evaluation of such defects is mandatory for the assessment of the results of different therapeutic procedures. In the present study, a system has been developed to record the results of facial paralysis following therapy. Such a system does not require specialized training, instrumentation or require significant time for completion. A clearly-defined "Yes-No" evaluation criteria is established which creates a high interscorer rel

[Medialization of the vocal fold in unilateral paresis and paralysis].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of injection laryngoplasty using calcium hydroxyapatite in patients with unilateral laryngeal paresis or paralysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included a retrospective analysis of data from 27 patients (6 men, 21 women) who underwent this procedure between 2020 and 2025. In total, 39 procedures were performed in the study group under local or general anesthesia, 1-4 interventions per patient. The objective examination included computerized acoustic voice analysis with assessment of Jitter (%), Shimmer (%), and HNR (dB). RESULTS: A statistic…

Atypical Acute Neuroborreliosis With Leg Paresis and Constipation.

BACKGROUND/AIM: An 80-year-old male patient had complained of proximal paresis of the left leg, pain and sensory disturbances in the left abdomen, exanthema in the left lower abdomen, coprostasis, and severe abdominal pain, as well as a progressive deterioration of his general condition for weeks. The patient had already presented to three other medical centers. Colonoscopy and computed tomography of the abdomen could not explain the pronounced symptomatology. In addition, there was acute elevator paresis of the left leg and severe pruritic rash on both sides of the trunk. CASE REPORT: At the…

Vocal fold paresis - a debilitating and underdiagnosed condition.

OBJECTIVES: To review the clinical signs of vocal fold paresis on laryngeal videostroboscopy, to quantify its impact on patients' quality of life and to confirm the benefit of laryngeal electromyography in its diagnosis. METHODS: Twenty-nine vocal fold paresis patients were referred for laryngeal electromyography. Voice Handicap Index 10 results were compared to 43 patients diagnosed with vocal fold paralysis. Laryngeal videostroboscopy analysis was conducted to determine side of paresis. RESULTS: Blinded laryngeal electromyography confirmed vocal fold paresis in 92.6 per cent of cases, with…

Severe and prolonged ictal paresis in an elderly patient.

We report an 84-year-old female who showed a rare manifestation of epilepsy, ictal paresis, a type of simple partial seizure presenting with focal motor dysfunction. While the patient exhibited severe left hemiplegia which lasted for a week, cranial diffusion-weighted MRI demonstrated slightly high intensity in the right posterior quadrant, and electroencephalography (EEG) showed continuous epileptiform discharges located mainly in the right parieto-occipital area, strongly suggesting that the patient was in an ictal state. (99m)Tc-hexamethylpropylene amine oxime-single photon emission compute…

[Posterior paresis due to a malignant lymphoma in a goat].

This report describes a 4-year-old goat with posterior paresis and subsequent paralysis caused by malignant lymphoma. The goat was referred to our clinic because of progressive posterior ataxia, which developed into posterior paresis and paralysis. The goat was presented in sternal recumbency but was able to assume a dog-sitting position. A neurological examination revealed reduced sensitivity to pricking of the skin with a needle, and a bilateral reduced panniculus reflex. The cerebrospinal fluid was slightly cloudy with increases in the protein concentration and leukocyte count, which consis…

General paresis of the insane: a case with MR imaging.

We describe the case of a 36-year-old man presenting with cognitive impairment and personality change. General paresis of the insane, the chronic cerebral parenchymatous form of neurosyphilis, was diagnosed. MRI showed the typical severe frontotemporal atrophy. Despite antibiotic treatment his mental state further declined. General paresis is rare and diagnosis is difficult because of the non-specific neuropsychiatric symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment are important.

Herpetic shoulder paresis in a Chinese elderly patient.

A patient with left shoulder girdle weakness secondary to herpetic myotomal paresis is reported. Needle electromyography revealed denervational discharge from the left supraspinatus, deltoid, and brachioradialis muscles, compatible with a radiculopathy that was relevant to his myotomes affected by zoster infection. The patient was managed with range-of-movement and strengthening exercises as well as pain relief for post-herpetic neuralgia. Further studies are required to determine whether antiviral treatment can limit the extent of motor deficit and hasten recovery. Zoster paresis should be on…

A surprising cause of paresis following scoliosis correction.

Paralysis following scoliosis correction is a catastrophic situation. We report an unusual metabolic cause of neurological deficit after ant … losed. Spinal surgeons should bear in mind hypokalaemia as a benign and easily correctable cause of paresis following surgical scoliosis correction.

[Differential diagnosis of unilateral paresis and paralysis of the larynx].

Differential diagnosis of laryngeal paresis and paralysis using electron glottography (EGG) was tried in 57 patients and 30 healthy controls. Measurements were made of speed quotient (SQ) and open quotient (OQ) at piano and forte. It was found that in patients and controls SQ and OQ were not similar. SQ and OQ differed also in paralysis and paresis. Tonicity of the inner laryngeal muscles seems to decline more in paralysis than in paresis. Aerodynamic properties of the larynx are damaged more in paralysis and remain unchanged in paresis. Reduced SQ and high OQ at forte indicate unilateral lary…

Facial nerve paresis as the presenting symptom of leukemia.

Leukemic involvement of the temporal bone is not uncommon and may present in a variety of ways including auricular or external canal skin lesions, red or thick tympanic membrane, middle ear effusions, otitis media, hearing loss or mastoiditis. Symptomatic facial nerve involvement, on the other hand, is extremely unusual. We discuss a pediatric patient whose sudden onset facial nerve paresis was the presenting symptom that led to her diagnosis of leukemia. At the time of mastoidectomy, a granulocytic sarcoma or chloroma was noted to be overlying the VIIth nerve.

Investigations into the cause of canal paresis in Menière's disease.

Since the literature has a paucity of documented lesions of the vestibular hair cells and neurons in Menière's disease, the cause of canal paresis remains unexplained. A clinicopathological correlation was sought and demonstrated between ampullary distortion of lateral canal and reduced caloric response. The findings in this investigation make a strong case for ampullary distortion disrupting the tenuous but vital cupulary attachment resulting in canal paresis. This concept is attractive because it explains an important clinical event in Menière's disease on the basis of the only consistent hi…
