Pathological findings in 61 free-ranging leopards (Panthera pardus) from the Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa. Part One: parasites.

The Kruger National Park and surrounding protected areas in South Africa are home to a core unmanaged population of approximately 1,200 free-ranging leopards (Panthera pardus). Leopard populations outside of protected areas are in decline due to trophy hunting, habitat fragmentation and human-wildlife conflict. Apart from single descriptions of parasites detected by faecal or necropsy examinations and serology, very little information is available on parasitic conditions in free-ranging leopards. This paper provides baseline information on parasites in free-ranging leopards that may be relevan

Stress recovery effects of visual exposure to bamboo landscapes in urban parks: Evidence from physiological and psychological responses.

Interactions with bamboo forests and bamboo parks are known to support human health, yet the stress-recovery effects of bamboo landscapes in urban parks remain insufficiently explored. This study examined psychophysiological responses to bamboo landscapes compared with an urban block landscape and evaluated how different landscape configurations influence stress recovery. Using photographic simulations, 280 university students were exposed to seven conditions: an urban block landscape (control) and six bamboo landscape types combining bamboo with terrain, architecture, environmental furniture,

Impacts of typhoons Molave and Goni on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in Apo Reef Natural Park, Philippines.

Philippine coral reefs have significantly declined over the past 40 years, resulting in reduced coral cover and shifts in the composition of associated organisms. While research on offshore reef systems often focuses on benthic habitat cover and reef fish, limited information remains on post-disturbance macroinvertebrate communities at a local scale. This study examines the impacts of two tropical cyclones on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in Apo Reef Natural Park (ARNP), Philippines. Typhoons Molave and Goni passed through ARNP between October and November 2020, causing extensive reef

Subtropical forest floor CO2 emission at the Kaziranga National Park in Northeast India.

This study investigates the seasonal and diurnal variations of soil CO2 flux (Fc) and the impact of meteorological variables on its dynamics. The study took place in the subtropical forest ecosystem of Kaziranga National Park (KNP), from November 2019 to March 2020. The highest Fc (6.24 gC m-2 day-1) was observed in the pre-monsoon season (March), and the lowest (0.85 gC m-2 day-1) in winter (February), with the mean value of 2.19 ± 0.84 gC m-2 day-1. Fc is primarily influenced by changes in air temperature (Tair), soil temperature (Tsoil), solar radiation (Rg), vapor pressure deficit (VPD), a

Urbanization and land use regulate soil vulnerability to antibiotic contamination in urban green spaces.

The presence of antibiotics in environment is an emerging concern because of their ubiquitous occurrence, adverse eco-toxicological effects, and promotion of widespread antibiotic resistance. Urban soil, which plays a noticeable role in human health, may be a reservoir of antibiotics because of intensive human disturbance. However, little is understood about the vulnerability of soil to antibiotic contamination in urban areas and the spatial-temporal characteristics of anthropogenic and environmental pressures. In this study, we developed a framework for the dynamic assessment of soil vulnerab

Repellent activity against Anopheles gambiae of the leaves of nesting trees in the Sebitoli chimpanzee community of Kibale National Park, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Every evening, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) build a sleeping platform so called "nest" by intertwining branches of tree. Most of chimpanzees' communities studied have a preference for tree species in which they nest. As female mosquitoes are feeding on the blood of their host at nighttime, chimpanzees may prevent being disturbed and bitten by mosquitoes by selecting tree species having properties to repel them. METHODS: To test the hypothesis that chimpanzees choose tree species for their aromatic properties, data related to 1,081 nesting trees built between 2017 and 2019 in the

Residential green space and age at menarche in German and Australian adolescent girls: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: A large multicentre European study reported later onset of menopause among women residing in greener areas. This influence on the timing of a reproductive event like menopause, raises the question whether similar associations can be observed with timing of menarche. We investigated whether exposure to residential green space was related to the age at menarche in German and Australian adolescent girls. METHODS: The analytic samples comprised of 1706 German and 1474 Australian adolescent girls. Percentage of green space was calculated in 1000 m buffers around a residential address o

Diversity of Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in an Atlantic Forest Urban Park, Salvador, Brazil.

We identified mosquito species (Diptera: Culicidae) in an Atlantic Forest fragment located in a large urban park in Salvador, Brazil, one year after a citywide epizootic of yellow fever virus (YFV). Between May 2 and August 2, 2018, adult mosquitoes were collected using the human attraction method, followed by trapping with hand-nets, and CO2-baited light traps placed at ground level and in the canopy. We collected a total of 11,914 mosquitoes, which belonged to three tribes, five genera, and at least seven species. The most abundant taxa captured by CO2-baited light traps were Culex quinquefa

Modeling future climate suitability for the western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus, in California with an emphasis on land access and ownership.

In the western United States, Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls (Acari: Ixodidae) is the primary vector of the agents causing Lyme disease and granulocytic anaplasmosis in humans. The geographic distribution of the tick is associated with climatic variables that include temperature, precipitation, and humidity, and biotic factors such as the spatial distribution of its primary vertebrate hosts. Here, we explore (1) how climate change may alter the geographic distribution of I. pacificus in California, USA, during the 21st century, and (2) the spatial overlap among predicted changes in tick habit

Phlebotomines (Diptera: Psychodidae) from a Urban Park of Belém, Pará State, Northern Brazil and Potential Implications in the Transmission of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

In urban ecotourism parks, the life cycle of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) agents can remain established, where phlebotomines may comprise potential risks for visitors. The present study aimed to survey the phlebotomine fauna of a forest park 'Bosque Rodriques Alves-Jardim Botânico da Amazônia' (BRAJBA), in the urban area of Belém, Brazil. The park was monthly surveyed in 2018 using CDC light traps placed in ground and canopy strata. Leishmania spp. isolated from dissected females were characterized by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (PCR-RF

Lyme Disease Risk of Exposure to Blacklegged Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) Infected with Borrelia burgdorferi (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae) in Pittsburgh Regional Parks.

Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne illness and sixth most commonly reported notifiable infectious disease in the United States. The majority of cases occur in the Northeast and upper-Midwest, and the number and geographic distribution of cases is steadily increasing. The blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis Say) is the principal vector of the Lyme disease spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto) in eastern North America. Although Lyme disease risk has been studied in residential and recreational settings across rural to urban landscapes including metropolitan areas,

Enhanced threat of tick-borne infections within cities? Assessing public health risks due to ticks in urban green spaces in Helsinki, Finland.

Most tick-related studies in Europe have been conducted in nonurban areas, but ticks and tick-borne pathogens also occur in urban green spaces. From a public health perspective, risks regarding tick-borne infections should be studied in these urban areas, where contacts between infected ticks and humans may be more frequent than elsewhere, due to high human activity. We examined the risk of encountering an infected tick in urban green spaces in Helsinki, Finland. We collected ticks at nine sites throughout Helsinki, recorded the prevalence of several pathogens and identified areas with a high

Larviciding Culex spp. (Diptera: Culicidae) Populations in Catch Basins and Its Impact on West Nile Virus Transmission in Urban Parks in Atlanta, GA.

In urban environments, road-side catch basins are common larval habitats of Culex spp. (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes and important targets of larval control in areas subject to West Nile virus (WNv) transmission. We quantified the impact of larviciding basins on Culex spp. populations and WNv infection prevalence by treating basins in and around urban parks in Atlanta, GA, using Mosquito Dunks and Bits (active ingredient, a.i., Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. isrealensis, Dunks-10.31%, Bits-2.86%) and Altosid 30-Day Briquets (a.i., S-methoprene 8.62%) in two separate seasons. Restoration treatments in urban park forests drive long-term changes in vegetation trajectories.

Municipalities are turning to ecological restoration of urban forests as a measure to improve air quality, ameliorate urban heat island effects, improve storm water infiltration, and provide other social and ecological benefits. However, community dynamics following urban forest restoration treatments are poorly documented. This study examines the long-term effects of ecological restoration undertaken in New York City, New York, USA, to restore native forest in urban park natural areas invaded by woody non-native plants that are regional problems. In 2009 and 2010, we sampled vegetation in 30

Management of tropical urban parks informed by divergent stomatal regulation of trees.

As climate change intensifies urban environmental challenges, cities increasingly rely on urban green spaces as climate adaptation infrastructure. Urban trees provide critical ecosystem services through root water uptake and leaf water loss, yet how their stomata respond to atmospheric drivers in tropical urban environments remains poorly understood. This research examines how ten dominant tree species in Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park, Bangkok regulate stomatal conductance (gs) in response to vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) across wet and dr
