[Tympanosclerosis--clinical and pathological investigation].

Fifty-nine cases of tympanosclerosis were investigated clinically and pathologically, and the following results were obtained: 1) The male to female ratio was about 1:1.8 2) Calcification in the tympanic membrane was most common in the upper quadrants of the pars tensa, and never seen in the pars flaccida. 3) Calcification in the middle ear cavity was most common around the malleus. 4) Chronic otitis media was the most common complication of tympanosclerosis. 5) Preoperative audiometry revealed a stiffness curve with elevated bone conduction thresholds. 6) 54% of the patient had chronic otitis

The Nun Study: risk factors for pathology and clinical-pathologic correlations.

The Nun Study was the first cohort study to enroll and follow a large, well-defined population that included demented and non-demented participants, all of whom agreed to donate their brains for research. The inclusion of systematic neuropathologic analysis in this study has resulted in a greater understanding of the role of Alzheimer and vascular pathology in the expression of memory deficits and dementia and has provided data showing that biomarkers for the pathology may be evident many decades earlier in adult life. Findings related to neuropathology in this study have included the followin

Thymomas: clinical-pathological correlations.

AIM: Since World Health Organization (WHO) histologic typing of tumors of the thymus publication in 1999 only a few studies correlated this classification with the clinical features of the patients. We present the results of a retrospective analysis on patients, operated on for a thymoma, whose specimens were available, to compare the WHO thymoma histologic classification to the clinical behavior of the tumors. METHODS: The specimens of 69 patients, who underwent surgical treatment between 1983 and 1998, were analyzed, comparing the clinical features of the patients and the hystological typin

Scleroderma--clinical and pathological advances.

The spectrum of scleroderma spans Raynaud's phenomenon, localized forms of skin fibrosis and the clinically most important forms of systemic sclerosis that involve inflammatory, vascular and fibrotic pathology. A closer relationship between these disparate conditions is now appreciated, and skin sclerosis is no longer regarded as mandatory for the diagnosis of systemic sclerosis. There have been recent and substantial changes in disease classification, the appreciation of its natural history and the investigation and treatment of organ-based complications. Although scleroderma still has a high

Endometritis: the clinical-pathologic syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate histologically proved endometritis as a clinical syndrome that is distinct from laparoscopically confirmed salpingitis. STUDY DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study of 152 women in an urban hospital with a suspected pelvic inflammatory disease. All women provided a standardized medical history and underwent physical examination, endometrial biopsy, and laparoscopy. We defined endometritis by the presence of plasma cells in endometrial stroma and neutrophils in the endometrial epithelium. RESULTS: Of 152 women who were enrolled, 43 women

Contact dermatitis: clinics and pathology.

Contact dermatitis or eczema is a polymorphic inflammation of the skin. It occurs at the site of contact with irritating or antigenic substances. In the acute phase there is occurrence of itching erythema, papules, and vesicles, whereas in the chronic phase there is dryness, hyperkeratosis, and sometimes fissures. Contact dermatitis can be divided into irritant and allergic types. Allergic contact dermatitis is a type-IV T-cell-mediated reaction occurring in a sensitized individual after contact with the antigen/allergen. Such antigens are usually low molecular weight substances (MW approximat
