This paper deals with several new findings regarding the trophic action of gastrointestinal hormones. Naturally occurring gastrins (G-17 I, G-17 II, G-34 II) stimulated DNA synthesis and increased total DNA content of gastric mucosa. A simple technique to examine the effects of drugs on the gastric secretion response to the secretagogues without anesthesia was shown in this paper. The administration of bethanechol (1 mg/kg, s.c.), histamine (15 mg/kg, s.c.) or pentagastrin (0.25 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly increased the gastric volume and the total acid output in the pylorus-ligated rat. This experimental study was aimed at determining the volume and acidity produced by the normal stomach, following antral mucosectomy (MA), proximal selective vagotomy (VSP) and combination of both procedures. In 41 patients in whom endoscopy showed benign gastric ulcer, gastric secretory function was assessed before and after stimulation with pentagastrin (6 micrograms/kg); they were then followed up for a period of 2-4 years. Of these 41 patients, 37 had benign and the remaining 4 malignant ulcers.
