The strength of the olivocochlear reflex has been assayed by comparing ipsilateral cochlear responses with and without contralateral sound. In humans, ipsilateral cochlear responses have usually been inferred by measuring otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), whereas, in animal work, they have been assessed by measuring compound action potentials (CAPs). Thus reports that the reflex strength is smaller in humans than in animals cannot be interpreted until the differences between the two tests are better understood. The present study directly compares reflex assays using distortion-product (DP) OAE and

Echolocating bats rely on precise auditory temporal processing to detect echoes generated by calls that may be emitted at rates reaching 150-200 Hz. High call rates can introduce forward masking perceptual effects that interfere with echo detection; however, bats may have evolved specializations to prevent repetition suppression of auditory responses and facilitate detection of sounds separated by brief intervals. Recovery of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was assessed in two species that differ in the temporal characteristics of their echolocation behaviors: Eptesicus fuscus, which use

Spatial crowding impairs conscious visual perception and object recognition in clutter.Short presentation times produce crowding in the normal fovea, in young participants and in uncorrected presbyopes ("aging eye"), measured as reduced visual acuity (VA). On the other hand, perceptual learning improves near VA in healthy young adults, in presbyopia, and in amblyopia. Here we aimed at exploring the effects of perceptual training on crowded VA in uncorrected presbyopes with naturally decreased VA, with two specific objectives: (a) to objectively measure crowded VA, taking advantage of the natur

In the past few years, the face mask has been recommended for the prevention of exposing others to COVID-19. Wearing a face mask may have the potential to increase dyspnea and discomfort during exercise; however, controversy exists on whether wearing face masks during exercise affects exercise performance, perception, and mood in runners. We investigated the physiological and perceptual responses of healthy male adults who had experienced long-distance running while exercising at different intensities. Nine healthy young adults who were long-distance runners wearing surgical face mask conducte

The speech signal may be divided into spectral frequency-bands, each band containing temporal properties of the envelope and fine structure. This study measured the perceptual weights for the envelope and fine structure in each of three frequency bands for sentence materials in young normal-hearing listeners, older normal-hearing listeners, aided older hearing-impaired listeners, and spectrally matched young normal-hearing listeners. The availability of each acoustic property was independently varied through noisy signal extraction. Thus, the full speech stimulus was presented with noise used

Face processing is characterized by idiosyncratic gaze patterns, whereby certain individuals preferentially look at the eyes, while others look at the mouth. Here, we examined whether idiosyncratic gaze preferences toward the upper or lower face modulate recognition when key features of the faces are occluded (masked). Furthermore, we investigated whether attentional cues to the eyes or mouth facilitate performance differentially as a function of idiosyncratic gaze preferences. Using a separate free-viewing task, we assessed each participant's gaze preference index, indicating whether the part

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if a group of listeners having thresholds at 4 kHz exceeding 7.5 dB HL, and no more than "slight" hearing loss, would exhibit degradations in performance when "target" stimuli were masked tokens of speech. Intelligibility thresholds and detection thresholds were measured separately for speech masked by flat-spectrum noise or speech-shaped noise. Both NoSo and NoSπ configurations were employed. Consistent with findings of earlier investigations, when maskers and speech tokens were broadband, NoSo and NoSπ detection thresholds were substantially

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is known to have significant consequences for temporal, spectral, and spatial resolution. However, much remains to be discovered about their underlying pathophysiology. This report extends the recent development of a nonhuman primate model of NIHL to explore its consequences for hearing in noisy environments, and its correlations with the underlying cochlear pathology. Ten macaques (seven with normal-hearing, three with NIHL) were used in studies of masked tone detection in which the temporal or spatial properties of the masker were varied to assess metrics of

BACKGROUND: Pure-tone audiometry is essential in diagnosing clinical hearing loss. Masking of the nontest ear is mandatory for determining accurate hearing thresholds in the presence of asymmetrical levels between the two ears and for ascertaining the presence of a conductive hearing loss. Paradoxically, over masking occurs when the intensity of the required masking noise to the contralateral ear is such that it exceeds interaural cranial attenuation by an amount sufficient to mask the test ear. Ralph F Naunton was the first to describe this phenomenon, which has since been known as "Naunton's

The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that anorexia nervosa (AN) patients are relatively insensitive to the attentional capture of visual food stimuli. Attentional avoidance of food might help AN patients to prevent more elaborate processing of food stimuli and the subsequent generation of craving, which might enable AN patients to maintain their strict diet. Participants were 66 restrictive AN spectrum patients and 55 healthy controls. A single-target rapid serial visual presentation task was used with food and disorder-neutral cues as critical distracter stimuli and disorder-

Camouflage is the primary defense behavior in cephalopods. It is known that cuttlefish immediately after hatching are capable of showing various body patterns for concealing themselves, however recent studies suggest that maturation of camouflage body patterns is faster for cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) reared in enriched environments than those reared in impoverished environments. Since camouflage patterning in cephalopods is predominately visually driven, this study specifically investigates effects of the rearing background contrast on the maturation of body patterns in cuttlefish (Sepia p

As advanced signal processing algorithms have been proposed to enhance hearing protective device (HPD) performance, it is important to determine how directional microphones might affect the localization ability of users and whether they might cause safety hazards. The effect of in-the-ear microphone directivity was assessed by measuring sound source identification of speech in the horizontal plane. Recordings of speech in quiet and in noise were made with Knowles Electronic Manikin for Acoustic Research wearing bilateral in-the-ear hearing aids with microphones having adjustable directivity (o

The additivity of nonsimultaneous masking can be used as a measure of nonlinearity in the auditory system. For example, two equally effective forward maskers should produce 3 dB of additional masking when they are combined, assuming linearity with respect to intensity. A combined effect greater than this (excess masking) indicates compression. In the present experiments, the signal was a 10-ms pure tone presented 20 ms after a 200-ms narrowband noise masker and/or immediately after a 20-ms narrow-band noise masker. The signal frequency was 250, 500, or 4000 Hz. The signal threshold produced by

The effect of syntactic context on auditory word identification and on the ability to detect and correct syntactic errors in speech was examined in severely reading disabled children and in good and poor readers selected from the normal distribution of fourth graders. The poor readers were handicapped when correct reading required analysis of the sentence context. However, their phonological decoding ability was intact. Identification of words was less affected by syntactic context in the severely disabled readers than in either the good or poor readers. Moreover, the disabled readers were inf

Misarticulating and normal-speaking children participated in Lombard and sidetone amplification procedures, under standard instructions and under instructions designed to maximize the response to the procedures. The experimental group consisted of twelve 8-year-old children who misarticulated the /r/ sound. They were matched with normal-speaking school peers. In the Lombard procedure, the children told stories about familiar pictures under 60 dB SPL and 90 dB SPL of masking noise. In the sidetone amplification procedure, they performed the same task under 0 and +20 dB of amplified feedback. Th

The threshold of octave masking (TOM) test was administered to normal-hearing and sensorineural-impaired listeners at four test frequencies; 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz. The TOM value was found to be inversely proportional to the degree of hearing loss at the masker frequency. Results indicate that the TOM test is capable of distinguishing subjects with sensorineural involvement from those with normal hearing and of providing a measure of the degree of sensory dysfunction. Examination of the slope of octave masking dysfunction. Examination of the slope of octave masking revealed that once the

In order to evaluate the frequency selectivity of the 500 Hz FFR we applied narrow-band masking at closely spaced center frequencies in the range 0.25 to 4 kHZ. The results show clearly that it is the apical part of the cochlea that generates the 500 Hz FFR, but the area of the basilar membrane that contributes is rather broad. It was evident that some of the masking effect that was observed in the Vertex-derived response stemmed from as yet obsure brain stem mechanisms. Examination of 3 patients with selected types of hearing impairment confirmed the masking results. When there is a low frequ

Previous research has mostly approached face recognition and target identification by focusing on face perception mechanisms, but memory mechanisms also appear to play a role. Here, we examined how the presence of a mask interferes with the memory mechanisms involved in face recognition, focusing on the dynamic interplay between encoding and recognition processes. We approach two known memory effects: (a) matching study and test conditions effects (i.e., by presenting masked and/or unmasked faces) and (b) testing expectation effects (i.e., knowing in advance that a mask could be put on or take
