The destructiveness and public health significance of socially prescribed perfectionism: A review, analysis, and conceptual extension.

Perfectionism is a multidimensional personality construct with various components. Socially prescribed perfectionism (i.e., perceived social pressures and expectations to be perfect) is one key element. This trait dimension represents a chronic source of pressure that elicits feelings of helplessness and hopelessness at extreme levels. Unfortunately, at present, the destructiveness of socially prescribed perfectionism has not been fully recognized or extended conceptually despite the extensive volume of research on this dimension. To address this, we first trace the history and initial concept…

Perfectionism dimensions: A network analysis of their relationships with affect and obsessive-compulsive pathological personality traits.

This study investigated the associations of multidimensional perfectionism with positive affect and negative outcomes (affect and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder [OCPD] pathological traits) through network analysis. The sample consisted of 604 Brazilian adults aged 18-74 years. The network analysis showed that perfectionistic concerns (PC) is strongly and positively associated with negative outcomes, while perfectionistic strivings (PS) maintain positive associations with positive affect, but not negative affect. Negative affect seems to operate as a bridge between perfectionism and …

The Moderating Role of Grit in the Relationship Between Perfectionism and Depression Among Chinese College Students.

Background: As a personality trait, perfectionism has shown a close association with psychological disorders, such as depression. The protective effect of grit on depression has been confirmed by a series of recent studies. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the buffering role of grit in the above relationship and the possible underlying mechanism. Objective: Based on the multidimensional theory of perfectionism, we differentiated two dimensions of perfectionism as positive and negative and further examined the relationships between these two dimensions of perfectionism and depression. …

Perfectionism, self-stigma, and coping in students with dyslexia: The central role of perfectionistic self-presentation.

Dyslexia is a prevalent condition, and a significant percentage of students in higher education are dyslexic. Despite this, few studies have investigated dyslexia in university students and what personality dispositions may predict how students feel about help-seeking for dyslexia and how they cope with dyslexia. Against this background, the present study investigated perfectionism, self-stigma, and coping in 115 university students with dyslexia, examining the relationships between dispositional perfectionism (self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism) and perfectionistic self-prese…

[The role of perfectionism, social phobia, self-efficacy and life satisfaction in the background of trait anxiety].

BACKGROUND AND AIMS OF THE STUDY: Anxiety related studies often investigate the personality factors and possible comorbid anxiety disorders that may underly trait anxiety. Women have higher prevalence rates across anxiety disorders, so we chose to examine the trait anxiety, perfectionism, self-efficacy and life satisfaction in a group of female participants. METHOD: An online, self-reported questionnaire was used as an online method of data collection. The sample consisted of young women aged between 15-35 (N = 435, M = 27.3 years; SD = 5.9). Besides from measuring trait anxiety, questionnair…

Examining affect and perfectionism in relation to eating disorder symptoms among women with anorexia nervosa.

This study examined personality and affective variables in relation to eating disorder symptoms in anorexia nervosa (AN). Women (N=118) with DSM-IV AN completed baseline questionnaires (Beck Depression Inventory, Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale) and interviews (Eating Disorder Examination, Yale-Brown-Cornell Eating Disorder Scale), followed by two weeks of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) involving multiple daily reports of affective states and eating disorder behaviors. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted using eating disorder symptoms as dependent variables (i.e.,…

Perfectionism, self-compassion, intuitive eating and health-related quality of life in kidney transplant recipients.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects ~850 million people globally, imposing significant health burdens. This study was the first to examine how perfectionism, via self-compassion, stress and coping, predicts health outcomes such as health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and intuitive eating for kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Structural equation modelling was used to examine these relationships in KTRs (n = 354, x̄ age = 53.10 years, SD = 12.46 years, 74.6% female) and a non-CKD comparison group (n = 400, x̄ age = 39.39 years, SD = 12.91 years, 84.3% female). Results showed that 'maladapt…

The double-edged nature of multidimensional perfectionism: career adaptability in employment stress among college students.

BACKGROUND: As job opportunities become more competitive, the job search process has become a salient source of stress for college students. From a psychological perspective, differences in stress experiences are closely related to how individuals manage and expend their psychological resources. METHODS: Based on Conservation of Resources theory, this study used well established scales and conducted a survey among 900 college students from 3 universities in China. The study focused on perfectionism as an individual difference characteristic, examined the associations between its different ori…

Longitudinal Dyadic Associations Between Perfectionism, Emotional Intimacy, and Relationship and Sexual Satisfaction in Adult Couples.

Perfectionism is a personality trait marked by excessive standards of performance and a tendency to critically evaluate oneself and others. Multidimensional perfectionism, including self-oriented perfectionism, other-oriented perfectionism, and socially-prescribed perfectionism has been linked with couple difficulties, including lower relationship and sexual satisfaction. However, most studies are cross-sectional and have overlooked the mechanisms underlying these associations. While emotional intimacy positively predicts relationship and sexual satisfaction, the interpersonal dimensions of pe…

Perceived parental psychological control and eating-disordered symptoms: maladaptive perfectionism as a possible intervening variable.

Recent developmental theorizing conceptualizes perfectionism as a mediator of the relation between intrusive parenting and psychopathology. Research addressing this hypothesis in relation to eating disorders (EDs), however, is lacking. This case-control study (a) examined mean-level differences between ED patients and normal controls in psychologically controlling parenting and perfectionism and (b) addressed the intervening role of perfectionism in associations between psychological control and ED symptoms, distinguishing between maladaptive and relatively more adaptive types of perfectionism…

Under pressure: Socially prescribed perfectionism, social evaluation, and stress in middle and late adolescence.

Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by stressful life transitions and changes in social environments. Research indicates that socially prescribed perfectionism is a mental health risk factor. This study examines the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism, daily stress, and acute social stress in middle and late adolescence, drawing developmental comparisons between these stages. We also explore social processing factors that help explain the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and stress. Finally, we examine self-oriented perfectionism to see …

Bidirectional Associations between Daily Symptoms of Perfectionism and Poor Sleep: The Mediating Role of Stress.

OBJECTIVES: Perfectionism is a risk factor for poor sleep. Past studies have examined the relationship between perfectionism and sleep using summary statistics that do not account for intra-individual day-to-day variability. Using ecological momentary assessment, this study investigated the bidirectional and temporal relationships between perfectionism and sleep, and the mediating effects of stress. METHODS: Sixty-three adults (85.7% female, mean age 30.13 ± 10.96 years) were sampled from the Australian general population. Measures collected over 14 days included the Pittsburgh Sleep Diary, D…

Perfectionism, perceived stress, and presleep arousal in insomnia: effects on sleep in a daily life study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Perfectionism is considered a predisposing and maintaining factor for insomnia disorder. However, previous studies were predominantly based on retrospective self-reports of sleep and have yielded mixed results. Here, we investigated associations between perfectionism, daily stress levels, pre-sleep arousal, and actigraphic and sleep diary-derived sleep in insomnia using an experience sampling design. METHODS: Individuals with insomnia (n = 63) reported their trait perfectionism levels and completed assessments on seven consecutive days. Momentary stress levels were reported …
