Pericardiocentesis is useful in the diagnosis and treatment of pericardial effusive disease. To date, a number of methods have been developed to reduce complications and increase the success rate of the procedure. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and the safety of echocardiography-guided pericardiocentesis under continuous echocardiographic monitoring in the management of pericardial effusion. We prospectively performed 161 pericardiocentesis procedures in 141 patients admitted from 1993 to 2015 in 3 centers. This procedure was performed for tamponade or large pericard

A 9 yr old spayed female golden retriever was evaluated for anorexia and suspected gastric dilatation. Subsequent evaluation the following day determined the dog to have pericardial effusion. Muffled heart sounds and jugular pulses were noted on physical exam, and the dog was diagnosed with pleural and pericardial effusion. A sinus rhythm with a rate of 142 beats/min was documented on a surface electrocardiogram (EKG). Following pericardiocentesis, the heart rate increased to 260 beats/min, the rhythm became irregular, and the systemic blood pressure decreased. Atrial fibrillation (AF) was con

Cardiac tamponade represents a medical emergency necessitating emergent pericardiocentesis. Use of two-dimensional echocardiography (ECHO) has improved the safety of pericardiocentesis, but procedural challenges may occur when performed in an emergent manner outside of the catheterization laboratory without availability of fluoroscopy and readily available pressure transducers. The most problematic situation is the initial finding of bloody fluid on aspiration where intrapericardial versus intravascular location of the needle must be determined. We report two cases of cardiac tamponade managed

A 5-year-old, intact male, golden retriever was presented with an acute onset of lethargy and respiratory distress. The dog was diagnosed as having rodenticide intoxication with pericardial effusion. Pericardiocentesis was successfully performed and was followed with a blood transfusion. This case suggests that rodenticide intoxication might cause pericardial effusion in dogs.

OBJECTIVES: Pericardial effusion is characterized by progressive accumulation of fluid within the pericardial space, resulting in increased intra-pericardial pressure and compression of the heart. As B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is secreted by the ventricles in response to increased myocardial stretch, we hypothesized that pericardial effusion, as well as its resolution, might influence BNP plasma levels.
METHODS: We prospectively measured, in 146 consecutive patients with pericardial effusion, BNP plasma levels at baseline, soon after, and 24h after pericardiocentesis. A scoring system b

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a reversible cardiomyopathy, which generally developes in menopausal women and is characterized by left ventricle dysfunction with apical ballooning in the absence of coronary artery disease. It is often triggered by a stressful event, and its clinical presentation resembles acute anterior myocardial infarction. This condition is a rare adverse event of cardiac operations, and only a few cases are described in the literature, especially after mitral valve operations. We report the case of a 69-year-old man who underwent aortic valve repair and ascending aorta replac

Background and Objectives: Cardiac tamponade is managed through echo- or fluoroscopy-guided percutaneous pericardiocentesis. The European Society of Cardiology's Working Group on Myocardial and Pericardial Diseases proposed a triage strategy for these patients. This study evaluated the triage score and compared the safety and efficacy of fluoroscopy- versus echo-guided procedures without additional visualization control. Materials and Methods: This prospective observational study included 71 patients with cardiac tamponade from February 2021 to June 2022. Pericardiocentesis was performed using

AIM: Percutaneous pericardiocentesis represents the sole curative intervention for significant pericardial effusion, especially in cardiac tamponade. While the subxiphoid route is traditionally the most utilized, alternative approaches - such as the apical access - have also been adopted. To date, no studies have directly compared the performance, risk profile, and clinical implications of these techniques. This study aims to evaluate and compare the effectiveness, complication rates, and short- to medium-term outcomes of apical versus subxiphoid pericardiocentesis.

BACKGROUND: Pericardiocentesis offers a definitive diagnostic and a life-saving therapeutic modality through removal of pericardial fluid and relief of high intrapericardial pressure. Percutaneous pericardiocentesis has been performed via different approaches depending on different institutional experiences. In this paper, we present our institutional experience and review the current literature of the different approaches for performing percutaneous pericardiocentesis.

In this study, we aimed to examine the diagnostic yield of pericardial fluid biochemistry and cytology and their prognostic significance in patients with percutaneously drained pericardial effusions, with and without malignancy. This is a single-center, retrospective study of patients who underwent pericardiocentesis between 2010 and 2020. Data were extracted from electronic patient records, including procedural information, underlying diagnosis, and laboratory results. Patients were grouped into those with and without underlying malignancy. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to analyze

BACKGROUND: While institutional series have sought to define the optimal strategy for drainage of pericardial effusions, large-scale comparisons remain lacking. Using a nationally representative sample, the present study examined clinical and financial outcomes following pericardiocentesis (PC) and surgical drainage (SD) in patients admitted for pericardial effusion and tamponade.
METHODS: Adults undergoing PC or SD within 2 days of admission for non-surgically related pericardial effusion or tamponade were identified in the 2016-2019 Nationwide Readmissions Database. Multivariable logistic a

AIM: This study investigated the factors predicting survival and the recurrence of pericardial effusion (PE) requiring pericardiocentesis (PCC) in patients with cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed the data of patients who underwent PCC for large PEs from 2010 to 2020 at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The time to the first recurrent PE requiring PCC was the interval from the index PCC with pericardial drain placement to first recurrent PE requiring drainage (either repeated PCC or a pericardial window). Univariate and multivariate Fine-Gray models accounting for the

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to confirm the precise course of a pericardiocentesis with the anterior approach using post-procedural computed tomography (CT).
BACKGROUND: Percutaneous epicardial ventricular tachycardia (VT) ablation has been increasingly performed. Although the inferior approach has been the common method, the feasibility of the anterior approach has subsequently been reported. However, the precise course of the anterior approach has not been presented.
METHODS: An epicardial ablation with the anterior approach was performed in 15 patients. At the end of the procedure, the ep

Diagnostic and therapeutic pericardiocentesis is traditionally carried out via the transthoracic route under ultrasound or echocardiographic guidance. Posteriorly located loculated pericardial effusion cannot be safely drained using the standard subxiphoid or apical, intercostal approach. In the presence of clinically significant loculated effusion or effusion requiring diagnostic pericardiocentesis where an echocardiographic approach is not feasible, patients are usually referred for surgery. We here present a novel minimally invasive endobronchial ultrasound-guided approach for the aspiratio
