The hereditary neuropathies, representing up to 20 per cent of the total of peripheral neuropathies, present a considerable problem in neurology, rehabilitation medicine, and orthopedics. Patients have predominant foot abnormalities such as pes cavus and talipes equina varus. The largest section is the Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome or peroneal muscular atrophy, followed by the leucodystrophies and adrenal myloneuropathy. Information is burgeoning with the advent of molecular genetics, and we anticipate therapeutic options when gene products are discovered.

A 14-year-old girl developed right peroneal nerve palsy following diet for weight reduction. Peroneal neuropathy started after sitting and leg-crossing. The main electrophysiologic findings showed a severe slowing of conduction velocity in the above-to-below capitulum fibulae segment and a striking reduction in the size of the compound motor action potential when the nerve was stimulated above the knee. These features are consistent with focal demyelination and conduction block of the nerve fibres. The left peroneal nerve showed the same results but less severe. There were no electrophysiologi

During a 6-year period, 14 of 898 patients examined at a pediatric electromyographic laboratory had a compressive mononeuropathy. These included five injuries to the peroneal nerve, four to the sciatic nerve, two to the distal radial nerve, and one each to the deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve, the musculocutaneous nerve, and the long thoracic nerve. A potentially preventable mechanism was identified in 9 of the 14 patients, including prolonged posture in three of the four sciatic and two of the peroneal neuropathies. Four other mononeuropathies were secondary to pressure from an orthopedi…

Entrapment neuropathies in the lower limbs are a common neurologic problem and may present in any medical setting. Accurate identification and management of these nerve palsies can prevent pain, sensory loss, incoordination, and muscle weakness that may significantly affect a patient's functional mobility. In this article, the authors focus on the cause, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of select entrapment neuropathies of the lower extremity, including palsies of the common peroneal, lateral femoral cutaneous, femoral, and posterior tibial nerves.

INTRODUCTION: In this study we sought to characterize etiologies and features of sciatic neuropathy unrelated to penetrating nerve trauma.
METHODS: This investigation was a retrospective review of 109 patients with electrodiagnostically confirmed sciatic neuropathies.
RESULTS: Hip replacement surgery represented the most common (34.9%) etiology, whereas inflammatory sciatic neuropathy was seen in 7.3%. Electrodiagnostic testing revealed an axonal neuropathy in 95.4% and a demyelinating neuropathy in 4.6%. Predominant involvement of the peroneal division was seen in 39.4% and was tibial in 5.

Sixty-two uremic patients on dialysis of varying durations were tested bilaterally for posterior tibial nerve H-reflex latency, at 3-month intervals. Bilateral nerve conduction velocities (NCVs) of the peroneal, tibial, and sural nerves were concomitantly determined in all subjects. Proprioception sense, vibration perception threshold at the great toes, and deep tendon reflexes at the knee and ankle were determined in all subjects on the day of electrodiagnostic testing. The sensitivity of the H-reflex latency in detection of the onset and severity of uremic neuropathy was assessed. H-reflex l

The accessory deep peroneal nerve (ADPN) is a common variant branch of the superficial peroneal nerve. It unrarely participates in the innervation of the extensor digitorum brevis muscle and interferes with the differential diagnosis of peroneal nerve lesions. Several electrophysiological and anatomical studies have been conducted in order to document the topography, characteristics and prevalence of ADPN, presenting significantly different results. ADPN existence is of great clinical and surgical importance, thus the aim of this study is to select and present all the relevant data available i

A 72-year-old chronically depressed man developed bilateral ulnar, median, and peroneal nerve palsies. Chronic depression predisposes to pressure neuropathies because of prolonged immobility and because of postures with leg crossings, resting arms on elbows, and resting chin on hyperextended wrist.

The main nerves in the knee region are the tibial nerve, the common peroneal nerve, and the saphenous nerve. These three nerves innervate the lower leg and foot, providing sensory and motor function. The large sciatic nerve splits just above the knee to form the tibial and common peroneal nerves. The tibial nerve travels down in the posterior region, while the common peroneal nerve runs around the lateral side of the knee and runs down the front of the leg to the foot. Although all these nerves can be affected by injuries of the knee, the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve (IPBSN) and

BACKGROUND: One of the causes of foot drop is compression of the common peroneal nerve caused by space-occupying lesions such as a synovial cyst or a ganglion cyst. Most previous reports have involved compressive common peroneal neuropathy by intraneural ganglion cysts and synovial cysts. Compression of the peroneal nerve by extraneural ganglion cysts is rare. We report a rare case of compressive common peroneal neuropathy by an extraneural ganglion cyst.
CASE SUMMARY: A 46-year-old man was hospitalized after he reported a right foot drop for 1 mo. Manual muscle testing revealed scores of 1/5

Anticipated sequelae of critical care admission for COVID-19 disease remain unclear. Our Edinburgh-based critical care follow-up service identified patterns with nerve injury in 13 of 35 patients who attended following a critical care admission between 15/03/2020 and 25/12/2020. This included 7 cases of meralgia parasthetica, 1 brachial plexopathy, 2 common peroneal neuropathies and 3 ulnar neuropathies. All cases of upper limb neuropathy and foot drop occurred in patients in whom prone positioning was used, with meralgia parasthetica occurring additionally in patients who remained supine.

Peroneal neuropathy is one of the rarest yet disabling complications that could occur after rapid weight loss following a bariatric surgery. Herein, we reported a 23-year-old female patient who developed foot drop after losing 88% of her excess weight within six months after having laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Electrophysiological studies showed total common peroneal nerve involvement. Within three months, the patient showed a full functional and electrophysiological recovery after receiving conservative treatment. This case emphasizes the significance of early diagnosis, as well as the po

Peroneal nerve palsy is a rare complication of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Previous studies have investigated surgical variables contributing to the development of peroneal nerve palsy after TKA, but have ignored potential medical and anesthetic risk factors. The charts of all patients undergoing TKA over a 1-yr period were retrospectively studied to identify medical, surgical, and anesthetic risk factors contributing to the development of peroneal nerve palsy after TKA; 361 TKAs were performed on 292 patients. There were eight peroneal nerve palsies in seven patients representing an overal

BACKGROUND: This study aims to assess the recovery patterns and factors influencing outcomes in patients with common peroneal nerve (CPN) injury.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 45 patients with CPN injuries treated between 2009 and 2019 in Jing'an District Central Hospital. The surgical interventions were categorized into three groups: neurolysis (group A; n = 34 patients), nerve repair (group B; n = 5 patients) and tendon transfer (group C; n = 6 patients). Preoperative and postoperative sensorimotor functions were evaluated using the British Medical Research Council grading syst

Dislocation of the native knee represents a challenging injury, further complicated by the high rate of concurrent injury to the common peroneal nerve (CPN). Initial management of this injury requires a thorough neurovascular examination, given the prevalence of popliteal artery injury and limb-threatening ischemia. Further management of a knee dislocation with associated CPN palsy requires coordinated care involving the sports surgeon for ligamentous knee reconstruction and the peripheral nerve surgeon for staged or concurrent peroneal nerve decompression and/or reconstruction. Finally, the f
