Legacy persistent organic pollutants in Mytilus galloprovincialis from the Sochi River estuary (Russian black sea coast): A mussel watch monitoring study.

This study presents current data on POP levels in the soft tissues of Mytilus galloprovincialis from the Sochi River estuary on the Russian Black Sea coast. Our results revealed a predominance of degradation products (β-HCH, DDE, and DDD), indicating the long-term environmental persistence of these substances. However, the presence of parent pesticide compounds (lindane, o,p'-DDT, and p,p'-DDT) in some samples could suggest a possible recent local influx. Among PCBs, highly chlorinated congeners (PCBs 118, 153, and 138) were prevalent, implying a historical contribution of these xenobiotics. S

Persistent Organic Pollutants released from decomposed adipose tissue affect mitochondrial enzyme function in the brain and eyes other than the liver.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemicals that can accumulate in the human body, and particularly in adipose tissue. POPs can induce metabolic diseases via mitochondrial dysfunction and can also cause cancer, obesity, and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Although the effects of POPs were studied by evaluating mitochondrial function, which is fundamental in investigating the etiologies of various metabolic diseases, the physiological impact of POPs released by the decomposition of fat in adipose tissue is barely understood. Therefore, to investigate the mitochondria…

Greener production of a starch-based nanohybrid material (core-shell) for the simultaneous extraction of persistent organic pollutants in shrimp samples.

Here, a novel nanohybrid material (Ag@CD@ANS) based on oat starch was produced, characterized, and applied to extract persistent organic pollutants in a shrimp sample. By the characterization experiments, Ag@CD@ANS was successfully synthesized. The functionalization of the material by 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulphonic acid (ANS) was confirmed using the infrared technique and CHN elemental analysis. The isotherm study showed that the material has a high adsorption capacity for the pesticides of interest (flutriafol, atrazine, heptachlor, DDT and bifenthrin) allowing their extraction from shrimp sa…

Highly chlorinated unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants generated during the methanol-based production of chlorinated methanes: A case study in China.

The formation of unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may occur during various chlorination processes. In this study, emissions of unintentionally produced POPs during the methanol-based production of chlorinated methanes were investigated. High concentrations of highly chlorinated compounds such as decachlorobiphenyl, octachloronaphthalene, octachlorostyrene, hexachlorobutadiene, hexachlorocyclopentadiene, hexachlorobenzene, and pentachlorobenzene were found in the carbon tetrachloride byproduct of the methanol-based production of chlorinated methanes. The total emiss…

Determination of selected perfluorinated alkyl acids and persistent organic pollutants from a small volume human serum sample relevant for epidemiological studies.

A simple and fast method is presented for the determination of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and perfluorinated alkyl acids (PFAAs), a subgroup of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) from a single 200μl aliquot of serum. Sample pretreatment starts with dispersive solid phase extraction of POPs to dichloromethane-hexane, which is immediately poured to cleanup column. POPs are eluted from column and concentrated for GC-MS/MS analysis. PFAAs are trapped to dispersant and are then extracted with ammonium acetate in methanol, concentrated and analysed with LC-MS/MS. For…

In vitro steroidogenic effects of mixtures of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) extracted from burbot (Lota lota) caught in two Norwegian lakes.

This study investigated the effects of two mixtures of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on steroidogenesis in the H295R cell line. The two mixtures were obtained from the livers of burbot (Lota lota) caught in two Norwegian lakes (Mjøsa and Losna) with different contaminant profiles. Steroid hormone levels in the cell culture medium and mRNA levels of 16 genes involved in steroidogenesis were investigated. The crude Lake Mjøsa extract had to be diluted ten times more than the Lake Losna extract in order to prevent cytotoxicity. The ten times diluted Lake Mjøsa mixture had higher levels of …

Gas chromatography-Orbitrap mass spectrometry screening of organic chemicals in fly ash samples from industrial sources and implications for understanding the formation mechanisms of unintentional persistent organic pollutants.

Clarifying the occurrences of organic chemicals in fly ash produced during industrial thermal processes is important for improving our understanding of the formation mechanisms of toxic pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), halogenated PAHs, dioxins, and other unintentional persistent organic pollutants. We developed a highly sensitive gas chromatography-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (GC-Orbitrap/MS) method and applied it to screening of organic pollutants in fly ash samples from multiple industrial thermal processes. The GC-Orbitrap/MS method could detect and quantify organ…

Accumulation and temporal trends (2002-2023) of legacy and emerging persistent organic pollutants in common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) from Korean coastal waters.

Elevated accumulation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in marine mammals remains a concern for the health and conservation of marine ecosystems. Long-term monitoring of POPs in marine mammals is essential to evaluate the effectiveness of regulations and to understand their environmental behavior in marine ecosystems. We investigated accumulation patterns and temporal trends of legacy and emerging POPs in the blubber of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) from Korean coastal waters over the past two decades (2002-2023). Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane…

The impact of persistent organic pollutants on fertility: exposure to the environmental toxicant 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin alters reproductive tract immune responses.

Exposure to environmental contaminants can result in profound effects on the host immune system. One class of environmental toxicants, known as dioxins, are persistent environmental contaminants termed "forever chemicals". The archetype toxicant from this group of chemicals is 2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), an immunotoxicant that activates the aryl-hydrocarbon receptor pathway leading to a variety of changes in immune cell responses. Immune cell functions are crucial to the development and maintenance of healthy reproduction. Immune cells facilitate tolerance between at the mat

Serum concentrations of persistent organic pollutants mixture during pregnancy and anogenital distance in 8-year-old children from the INMA-Asturias cohort.

BACKGROUND: During pregnancy, women are commonly exposed to several endocrine-disrupting chemicals, including persistent organic pollutants (POPs). These compounds can transfer to the fetus through the placenta. Prenatal POP exposure is related to altered fetal genital and reproductive tract development. However, the relationship between exposure to POP mixtures and anogenital distance (AGD) is poorly investigated. This study investigated the association between prenatal exposure to POP mixtures and AGD in 8-year-old children. METHODS: Data were collected from the INMA-Asturias cohort. Matern…

First screening of biocides, persistent organic pollutants, pharmaceutical and personal care products in Antarctic phytoplankton from Deception Island by FT-ICR-MS.

In recent years, the Antarctic territory has seen a rise in the number of tourists and scientists. This has led to an increase in the anthropogenic footprint in Antarctic ecosystems, namely in terms of emerging contaminants, such as Biocides, Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) as well as Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs). Yet scarce information on the presence of these emerging contaminants is available for trophic compartments, especially the phytoplankton community. Using high resolution Fourier-transform ion cyclotron-resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS), an untargeted …

Assessment of Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic Organic Environmental Pollutants in Liver and Adipose Tissue of Alzheimer's Disease Patients and Age-matched Controls.

BACKGROUND: Lifetime exposure to environmental (neuro) toxicants may contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Since many contaminants do not cross the blood-brain barrier, brain tissue alone cannot serve to assess the spectrum of environmental exposures. METHODS: We used liquid and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry to monitor, in postmortem liver and adipose tissues of AD patients and age-matched controls, the occurrence and concentrations of 11 environmental contaminants. RESULTS: Seven toxicants were detected at 100% frequency: p,p'-DDE, dieldrin, triclosan, me

Specialisation events of fungal metacommunities exposed to a persistent organic pollutant are suggestive of augmented pathogenic potential.

BACKGROUND: The impacts of man-made chemicals, in particular of persistent organic pollutants, are multifactorial as they may affect the integrity of ecosystems, alter biodiversity and have undesirable effects on many organisms. We have previously demonstrated that the belowground mycobiota of forest soils acts as a buffer against the biocide pollutant pentachlorophenol. However, the trade-offs made by mycobiota to mitigate this pollutant remain cryptic. RESULTS: Herein, we demonstrate using a culture-dependent approach that exposure to pentachlorophenol led to alterations in the composition …
