BACKGROUND: Accurately perceiving and learning about others’ personalities is crucial for successful social relationships. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is marked by unstable interpersonal dynamics, an unstable and negative self-concept, and a tendency to evaluate others unfavorably. Individuals with BPD are also more likely to be viewed negatively by others and experience social stigmatization. This study investigated whether women with BPD exhibit negativity biases when evaluating their own and others’ personality traits, and how these biases influence learning about others. METHODS:

The clinical utility of the DSM-5's Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) depends on how well it encodes diagnostic concepts recognized in clinical descriptions of PDs. The present study examined the AMPD's coverage of borderline personality features identified in the clinical literature. In three independent samples (total N = 1166), community adults and university students rated their borderline features, level of personality functioning (AMPD Criterion A), and maladaptive personality traits (AMPD Criterion B). We observed that, collectively, the AMPD dimensions accounted for 76%

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a clinically significant and extensively studied personality disorder (PD), associated with substantial impairment, risk, treatment needs, and health-system burden. Contemporary debates about its classification now occur within diagnostic systems that already move beyond purely categorical models, including ICD-11 and the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders. The central question is therefore not simply whether dimensional assessment should be incorporated into PD diagnosis, but how general personality disorder diagnosis, named categorical

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) shows strong associations with the general factor of personality disorders, which is proposed to reflect the level of impairment in personality functioning as defined by Criterion A in the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders. Limited evidence regarding the convergent validity between BPD and Criterion A, particularly in developmental contexts, poses a barrier to integrating categorical and dimensional models of personality disorders. To address this, we employed a latent variable cross-lagged panel model to examine the longitudinal associations bet

Early intervention of personality disorders (PD) in adolescents is crucial due to their long-term developmental impact. Dimensional models, like the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), may facilitate early detection and intervention, although their applicability in adolescent clinical populations is under-researched. This longitudinal study examines changes in PD diagnosis and impairments in personality functioning according to the AMPD and explores potential predictors in a clinical adolescent cohort. 227 adolescents (M age = 15.25, 85.02% female) from an outpatient clin

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate personality characteristics and clinical parameters in two well-defined epilepsies: mesial temporal lobe epilepsy related to hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE/HS) and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) through NEO Revised Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) and Neurobehavior Inventory (NBI) standardized instruments.
METHODS: One hundred patients undergoing corticoamygdalohippocampectomy (CAH), 100 patients with JME, and 100 control subjects answered the personality measures. Clinical parameters such as psychiatric symptoms, seizure frequency, durati

Personality factors may interact with development and expressions of panic disorder (PD). This study sought to identify differences in personality traits between patients with PD and healthy individuals and explore the relationships between personality domains and various demographic and clinical variables of PD. Personality traits were evaluated in 193 patients and 314 matched healthy subjects using the Swedish universities Scales of Personality (SSP). All SSP traits, except for detachment and physical trait aggression, were significantly deviated in PD group, as compared to healthy subjects.

To investigate how time perception may contribute to the symptoms of self-harming Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) patients, 19 self-harming BPD inpatients and 39 normal controls were given measures of time perception, impulsivity, personality, emotion, and BPD characteristics. A test sensitive to orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) function ("Frontal" Behavior Questionnaire) was also administered, as the OFC has been associated with impulsivity and time perception. BPD patients produced less time than controls, and this correlated with impulsiveness and other characteristics commonly associated w

Our cross-sectional study provides a head-to-head comparison of Section II and Section III of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5) diagnostic models of personality disorders (PDs) in identifying significant personality correlates of psychiatric hospitalization (PH). PH is an indicator of a breakdown in one's existing ability to manage mental crisis. The sample was recruited from psychiatric clinical services (N = 60) as well as universities and the local community (N = 49). We used the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 PD (SCID-5-PD) for Section II

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental disorder, which has been linked to a number of negative outcomes in adolescents and adults. BPD is generally linked to more severe impairments in personality functioning. The (differential) association of specific BPD symptoms with severity level, however, has not been explored yet. The present study explores the relationship between all nine BPD symptoms and impairments in personality functioning in adolescents using a cross-sectional design. A total of 116 treatment-seeking adolescents were administered semistructured interviews for D

Personality researchers are increasingly interested in the dynamics of personality, that is, the proximal causal mechanisms underlying personality and behavior. Here, we review the Zurich Model of Social Motivation concerning its potential to explain central aspects of personality. It is a cybernetic model that provides a nomothetic structure of the causal relationships among needs for security, arousal, and power, and uses them to explain an individual's approach-avoidance or "proximity-distance" behavior. We review core features of the model and extend them by adding features based on recent

The current study presented the first meta-analytic review on the associations between the Big Five personality traits and stress measured under different conceptualizations (stressor exposure, psychological and physiological stress responses) using a total of 1,575 effect sizes drawn from 298 samples. Overall, neuroticism was found to be positively related to stress, whereas extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness were negatively linked to stress. When stress assessed under different conceptualizations was tested, only neuroticism, agreeableness, and conscientiousness wer

Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are overrepresented in forensic settings. Yet, despite the burden these disorders place on healthcare and criminal justice systems, there remains a lack of evidence-based pharmacological treatments. Epidemiological data have shown that comorbid cannabis use disorders are common in BPD and ASPD. ∆9 -Tetrahydrocannabinol, the primary psychoactive constituent of cannabis, is an exogenous cannabinoid that stimulates the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Hence, an investigation of the ECS in these condition

With an estimated lifetime prevalence as high as 5.9% in the general population, borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by marked impulsivity as well as difficulties in interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects. The burden on the health care system is immense with BPD patients accounting for 10%-20% of the patients in mental health outpatient facilities and 15%-40% in mental health inpatient facilities. Further, while 75%-80% of BPD patients attempt to commit suicide, 10% succeed; this mortality rate exceeds even that of anorexia nervosa which,
