Studies involving patients with personality disorders (PDs) have not focused on improvement of core aspects of the PD. The authors examined changes in quality of object relations, interpersonal problems, psychological mindedness, and personality traits in a sample of 156 patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.) PD diagnoses being randomized to either manualized or nonmanualized dynamic psychotherapy. Effect sizes adjusted for symptomatic change and reliable change indices were calculated. The authors found that both treatments were equally effective at redu

Introduction: In Germany, there is a lack of recent population-based data regarding the prevalence of multiple personality disorder (MPD; ICD-10: F44.81) and the treatment of individuals with this diagnosis. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, psychiatric comorbidities, and treatment of MPD in Germany.Materials and Methods: Based on nationwide claims data, an observational trend study was conducted. For each year from 2012 to 2021, the proportion of persons with at least one coded MPD diagnosis was determined, stratified by sex, age and region. Additionally, psychiatric comorbidity, psy

INTRODUCTION: People with misophonia experience strong negative emotional responses to sounds and associated stimuli-mostly human produced-to an extent that it may cause impairment in social functioning. The exact nature of the disorder remains a matter of ongoing research and debate. Here, we investigated the genetic etiology of misophonia to understand contributing genetic factors and shed light on individual differences in characteristics that are related to the disorder.
METHODS: For misophonia, we used an unpublished genome-wide association study (GWAS) from genetic service provider 23an

BACKGROUND: The reported rates of personality disorder (PD) in subjects with schizophrenia (SZ) are quite varied across different countries, and less is known about the heterogeneity of PD among subjects with SZ. We examined the co-morbidity of PD among patients who are in the stable phase of SZ.
METHOD: 850 subjects were randomly sampled from patients diagnosed with SZ in psychiatric and psycho-counseling clinics at Shanghai Mental Health Center. Co-morbidity of PDs was assessed through preliminary screening and patients were administered several modules of the SCID-II. Evidence of heterogen

OBJECTIVE: The American Psychiatric Association (APA) practice guideline for panic disorder recommends psychodynamic psychotherapy for panic disorder patients with comorbid personality disorders. No data underlie this recommendation. This exploratory study assessed the moderating effect of personality disorder on psychodynamic and non-psychodynamic psychotherapy outcome.
METHOD: Forty-nine subjects with primary DSM-IV panic disorder were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of twice-weekly Panic-Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy or Applied Relaxation Training. The primary outcome measure was the P

OBJECTIVE: The authors determined morbidity risks for psychiatric illnesses in the families of probands with schizophrenia-spectrum personality disorders.
METHOD: Subjects were recruited from the community through newspaper advertisements. Subjects were identified as having schizophrenia-spectrum personality disorders (N = 30) if they met at least three, four, or three DSM-III-R criteria for schizoid (N = 14), schizotypal (N = 20), and/or paranoid (N = 15) personality disorder, respectively. The comparison subjects had no psychiatric diagnoses (N = 8) or had other personality disorders (N = 1

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of the most frequent, severe, mental conditions and is associated with a serious burden of disease. Treatment for patients with BPD involves structured psychotherapy. In addition and in order to improve access to care, psychiatric treatments are available. So far, it remains unclear if brief psychiatric intervention according to Good Psychiatric Management (GPM) produces a reliable effect on a variety of clinical outcomes. The assessment of mechanisms of change contributes to focus the treatment on the essential ingredients of change. Th

We examined internal consistency and criterion overlap of DSM-III-R personality disorder criteria in late adolescence, 2 years after psychiatric hospitalization. A total of 60 adolescents were assessed with the Personality Disorder Examination. Within-category cohesiveness (internal consistency) was evaluated by coefficient alpha and mean intercriterion correlation (MIC). Between-category criterion overlap was evaluated by examining intercategory mean intercriterion correlations (ICMIC) between all pairs of disorders. Internal consistency was low, with alpha less than .70 for all except border

The need to better understand and manage risk of violent behavior among people with severe mental illness in community care settings is increasingly being recognized, as public-sector mental health systems face mandates to provide more cost-effective services in less restrictive environments. The potential for serious violence in a small proportion of severely mentally ill (SMI) individuals has emerged as a key factor that increases cost and limits continuity and normalization of community-based services for populations with psychiatric disabilities. A major challenge to developing better stra

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an established risk factor for developing alcohol use disorder (AUD), and AUD-ADHD comorbidity is associated with additional psychiatric diagnoses. Several lines of evidence support the role of impulsivity as a pathway of these relationships; however, impulsivity is not a unitary construct. Thus, we sought to explore whether separate aspects of impulsivity may explain the relationship between ADHD symptoms and psychiatric comorbidity among inpatients (N = 136) with AUD. Methods: We assessed ADHD symptoms (childhood ADHD [Wender Utah Rating Sca

Background Substance use disorders (SUDs) frequently coexist with personality disorders (PDs), contributing to poorer treatment adherence, relapse, and clinical outcomes. Their coexistence with other psychiatric comorbidities further complicates management and highlights the need for comprehensive assessment. However, data regarding the prevalence and pattern of PDs among patients with SUDs in Indian tertiary care settings remain limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and pattern of PDs and personality traits among patients with SUDs, evaluate associated psychiatric comorbiditie

Introduction: It is common that personality disorder (PD) co-occurs with major depressive disorder (MDD). In the current literature, there is a dearth of information on the co-occurrence of PD and MDD among Chinese population. Materials and Methods: 609 individuals were randomly sampled from outpatients diagnosed as MDD in Shanghai Mental Health Center. Co-morbidity of PDs was assessed using the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire Fourth Edition Plus (PDQ-4+) and eligible subjects were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II (SCID-II). The score of PDQ-4+ and the

In order to clarify differential-diagnostic questions 47 mentally ill sex offenders (with impulse control disorder and paraphilia) were assessed with regard to comorbidity of personality disorders and "psychopathy". For this examination the SKID-II for personality disorders and the Psychopathy Checklist (PCL-R) were used. 72 % of the sex offenders showed at least one personality disorder. The highest prevalence was found for cluster-B disorders, first of all the antisocial personality disorder. Using a PCL-R cut off score of 25 (for Europe) 10 of the 47 subjects (21 %) were diagnosed as "psych

Clinicians working with patients with primary or co-occurring personality disorder diagnoses are often confused about how to work most effectively with patients' families. While there are a variety of well-described interventions for working with families of patients with borderline personality disorder, these options are often unavailable or unaffordable. The goal of this article is to outline a set of simple, commonsense interventions for generalist providers informed by two evidence-based treatments for patients with borderline personality organization or other moderate to severe personalit

BACKGROUND: Post-COVID syndrome (PCS) remains a substantial public health concern, yet its genetic determinants are poorly understood. Psychiatric disorders and related traits influence infection risk and acute COVID-19 outcomes, raising the possibility that shared genetic liability may also shape long-term symptom persistence. We examined whether polygenic scores (PGS) for schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BPD), major depressive disorder (MDD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and neuroticism are associated with PCS, and explored potential pathways underlying these associ

BACKGROUND: The five-factor model of personality, as quantified using instruments such as the Big Five Inventory, consists of broad personality domains including Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism (emotional instability), and Openness. Such instruments typically include >40 items. However, instruments with many items can be unwieldly and a cause of measurement error in clinical and cohort studies where multiple scales are sequenced. Conversely, established 5- and 10-item versions of the Big Five Inventory have poor reliability. Here, we developed and validated an abbre

OBJECTIVE: Although mental health disorders and high-risk substance use frequently co-occur, they are typically investigated independently. Clinical trials focused on treatment for individuals with trauma- and stressor-related disorders often exclude individuals with high-risk substance use. Little is also known about the role of gender in the relationship between trauma- and stressor-related disorders and high-risk substance use. We examined the relationship between trauma- and stressor-related disorders, high-risk substance use, and gender.
METHODS: Using the Mental Health Client-Level Data
