1. A 38-year-old previously healthy worker accidentally spilled phenol-formaldehyde resin over a large area of his skin. 2. Several days later he was hospitalized with extensive necrotic skin lesions, fever, hypertension, adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), proteinuria and renal functional impairment. 3. All symptoms improved progressively and eventually disappeared. 4. We propose that toxic materials originating from the necrotic skin lesions and the continued facilitated absorption of the resin and/or its components via the skin lesions were the main factors responsible for this alar…

As constituents of many plants, polyphenols can neutralize free radicals. By inactivating free radicals, skin homeostasis can be restored, which may prevent further damage and premature skin aging. To prevent the damage caused by UV exposure, photoprotection is becoming increasingly important. Plants known to be rich in polyphenols have been investigated for their use as sunscreens. The synergistic effect, which is due to the specific composition of plant extracts, is a disadvantage for applications such as large-scale sunscreens. The great diversity of polyphenols present in such plants can b…

This work presents the results of research on the influence of the amount of p-toluenesulfonic acid and phosphoric acid (V) added to the phenol-formaldehyde resin (pH 7.3-7.8) on its thermal properties and on the phenol-formaldehyde-carbon composite produced on its basis. This material undergoes pyrolysis under high temperature. The addition of a catalyst to the phenol-formaldehyde resin affects its curing rate and degree of cross-linking, but how it affects the thermal properties of the resin depending on the temperature is the subject of this work. This article presents the results of therma…

Pure phenol is colorless and used in the manufacture of phenolic resins, plastics, explosives, fertilizers, paints, rubber, textiles, adhesives, pharmaceuticals, paper, soap, and wood preservatives. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of several phenol decontamination strategies following dermal exposure using the pig as a model for human exposure, and then assess the effect of the two best treatments on phenol absorption in the isolated perfused porcine skin flap (IPPSF). Six anesthetized Yorkshire pigs were exposed to 89% aqueous phenol for 1 min using Hilltop chambers (10 …

BACKGROUND: Animal studies have shown that many signs of acute poisoning result from phenol entry into the systemic circulation by absorption or ingestion. While no evidence of systemic complications in patients who have undergone phenol nail matrixectomies have been reported, the safety of phenol vapour inhalation by physicians performing this treatment has yet to be investigated.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine whether the levels of phenol to which physicians are exposed to during a phenol-based matrixectomy procedure are within the limits of safe exposure.
METHODS: A co…

Pear pomace, a major by-product of the juice processing, represents a valuable yet underexploited source of bioactive compounds. In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was optimized using response surface methodology to enhance the recovery of phenolic compounds from pear pomace powder with aqueous ethanol as the extraction solvent. A Box-Behnken design was employed to evaluate the effects of ethanol concentration (40-80%), extraction time (30-90 min), and ultrasonic power (48-144 W) on total phenolic content and DPPH radical scavenging activity. The results demonstrated that the …

Traditional phenolic resins have issues such as high petroleum consumption and high curing temperatures. This study is the first to use cost-effective phenol as a nucleophile to depolymerize Acacia mangium tannin (AMT) under acidic conditions at 60 °C. Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/ Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) showed that the polymerization degree of the depolymerized Acacia mangium tannin (AMT-d) decreased from 9 to 2. Subsequently, depolymerized Acacia mangium tannin-phenol-formaldehyde resin (DT-PF) was prepared by replacing 50% of phenol with AMT-d. The th…

Phenolic acid decarboxylases (PADs) convert bio-based hydroxycinnamic acids into valuable hydroxystyrene monomers under mild reaction conditions. These compounds are in high demand in polymer production, cosmetics, and flavoring. Especially 4-vinyl syringol, the decarboxylation product from sinapic acid, generates polymers with similar thermal stability and higher glass transition temperatures than vinyl guaiacol, the decarboxylation product from ferulic acid. However, natural PAD enzymes typically show slow turnover with sinapic acid. In addition, establishing a viable industrial process requ…

Several commercially important vinyl phenolic compounds can be produced by enzymatic decarboxylation of phenolic acids such as ferulic and p-coumaric acids which can be extracted from agro-industrial waste. Phenolic acid decarboxylase is an enzyme that acts in the decarboxylation of these acids to 4-vinylguaiacol and 4-vinylphenol, respectively. In this study, the gene encoding phenolic acid decarboxylase from Klebsiella pneumoniae TD 4.7 was isolated and identified as a 504 bp fragment, encoding a polypeptide of 167 amino acid residues. A 98 % predicted amino acid sequence identity between fe…

The low reactivity of lignin hinders its application as a phenol substitute in phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin. Therefore, the combination of fractionation and phenolation was adopted to enhance the reactivity of lignin for preparing a phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesive. Sugarcane bagasse kraft lignin and its fractions were employed to replace 40 wt% of phenol to prepare a PF adhesive. The fractionation increased the reactivity of lignin, however the as-prepared lignin-based PF (LPF) hardly met its application requirements as an adhesive. Therefore, the phenolation of lignin under an acidic con…

Dietary phenolic compounds must be released from the food matrix in the gastrointestinal tract to play a bioactive role, the release of which is interfered with by food structure. The release of phenolics (unbound and bound) of cold and hot extruded noodles enriched with phenolics (2.0%) during simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion was investigated. Bound phenolic content and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were utilized to characterize the intensity and manner of starch-phenolic complexation during the preparation of extruded noodles. Hot extrusion induced the formation of more compl…

BACKGROUND: Tyrosinase is able to oxidize a great number of phenols and catechols to form ortho-quinones. Ortho-quinones are highly reactive compounds that exert cytotoxicity through binding with thiol enzymes and the production of reactive oxygen species. Certain phenolic (and catecholic) compounds are known to induce contact/occupational leukoderma through activation to ortho-quinones.
OBJECTIVE: We report a convenient screening method to follow the oxidation of those leukoderma-inducing phenols by mushroom tyrosinase.
METHODS: Oxidation of phenolic compounds by mushroom tyrosinase was fol…

Phenolic acids are one of the several classes of naturally occurring antioxidant compounds found in sweetpotatoes. Simplified, robust, and rapid methodologies were optimized to quantify total and individual phenolic acids in sweetpotato roots. Total phenolic acid content was quantified spectrophotometrically using both Folin-Denis and Folin-Ciocalteu reagents. The Folin-Ciocalteu reagent gave an overestimation of total phenolic acids due to the absorbance of interfering compounds (that is, reducing sugars and ascorbic acid). Individual phenolic acids were quantified by high-performance liquid …
