Perception of aperiodicities in synthetically generated voices.

The purpose of this study was to investigate univariate relationships between perceived dysphonia and variation in pitch perturbation, amplitude perturbation, and additive noise. A time-domain, pitch-synchronous synthesis technique was used to generate sustained vowels varying in each of the three acoustic dimensions. A panel of trained listeners provided direct magnitude estimates of roughness in the case of the stimuli varying in pitch and amplitude perturbation, and breathiness in the case of the stimuli varying in additive noise. Very strong relationships were found between perceived rough

The time course of the acoustic reflex.

The time course of the impedance changes caused by the contralateral acoustic reflex was investigated in five normal hearing, young adult subjects The acoustic reflex function was measured with equipment having a time constant of 15 milliseconds which permitted precise temporal measures. Temporal intervals from signal onset and termination to various portions of the acoustic reflex function were derived using an analysis procedure based on the slope function underlying the acoustic reflex response. These temporal intervals are related to physiological events underlying the acoustic reflex.

Tone Deafness in Music Does Not Preclude Distributional Learning of Nonnative Tonal Languages in Individuals With Congenital Amusia.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that individuals with congenital amusia exhibit deficient pitch processing across music and language domains. This study investigated whether adult Chinese-speaking listeners with amusia were still able to learn Thai lexical tones based on stimulus frequency of statistical distribution via distributional learning, despite their degraded lexical tone perception. METHOD: Following a pretest-training-posttest design, 21 amusics and 23 typical, musically intact listeners were assigned into bimodal and unimodal distribution conditions. Listeners were asked to d

Auditory identification of frequency-modulated sweeps and reading difficulties in Chinese.

BACKGROUND: In Chinese Mandarin, lexical tones play an important role of providing contrasts in word meaning. They are pitch patterns expressed by frequency-modulated (FM) signals. Yet, few studies have looked at the relationship between low-level auditory processing of frequency signals and Chinese reading skills. AIMS: The study aims to identify the role of auditory frequency processing in Chinese lexical tone awareness as well as character recognition in Chinese-speaking children. METHODS: Children with (N = 28) and without (N = 27) developmental dyslexia (DD) were recruited. All particip

Temporal processing in low-frequency channels: effects of age and hearing loss in middle-aged listeners.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss and age interfere with the auditory system's ability to process temporal changes in the acoustic signal. A key unresolved question is whether high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (HFSNHL) affects temporal processing in the low-frequency region where hearing loss is minimal or nonexistent. A second unresolved question is whether changes in hearing occur in middle-aged subjects in the absence of HFSNHL. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to examine the influence of HFSNHL and aging on the auditory temporal processing abilities of low-frequency audi

Voice Assessment in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome After Transoral Robotic Surgery.

Objectives: Removal of part of the tongue base, in combination with uvulopharyngopalatoplasty via transoral robotic surgery (TORS), for treating obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) results in enlargement of the oropharynx and hypopharynx and change in the size of the resonance chamber. These procedures may also alter the laryngeal-hyoid bone complex, which is linked to vocal fold tension. Thus, there is the potential for change in phonation and pitch after surgery. Study Design: Prospective, nonrandomized, institutional board-approved study. Methods: From January to August 2018, 15 patient

Dynamic current steering with phantom electrode in cochlear implants.

Phantom electrode (PE) stimulation can extend the lower limit of pitch perception with cochlear implants (CIs) by using simultaneous out-of-phase stimulation of the most apical primary electrode and the adjacent basal compensating electrode. The total electrical field may push the excitation pattern beyond the most apical electrode to elicit a lower pitch, depending on the ratio of current between the compensating and primary electrodes (i.e., the compensation coefficient σ). This study tested the hypothesis that dynamic current steering of PE stimuli can be implemented by varying σ over time …

Mapping Specific Mental Content during Musical Imagery.

Humans can mentally represent auditory information without an external stimulus, but the specificity of these internal representations remains unclear. Here, we asked how similar the temporally unfolding neural representations of imagined music are compared to those during the original perceived experience. We also tested whether rhythmic motion can influence the neural representation of music during imagery as during perception. Participants first memorized six 1-min-long instrumental musical pieces with high accuracy. Functional MRI data were collected during: 1) silent imagery of melodies t

Attention to memory: Asymmetric enhancement of mnemonic features in auditory working memory.

Models of auditory attention propose that multiple sound features are integrated into a perceptual object and that selective attention enhances the fidelity of these object-based representations. Similar attentional mechanisms appear to operate on representations held in auditory working memory, yet evidence has largely focused on a single feature. Thus, it remains unknown whether redirecting attention to an auditory memory object enhances multiple, distinct features bound to that object, or whether such enhancement varies across features depending on modality-specific biases or prior knowledg

Atypical Change Detection in Sound Sequences: A Behavioral and Magnetoencephalography Study in Congenital Amusia.

Pitch change detection and pitch memory are behaviorally impaired in congenital amusia. Yet rather preserved mismatch negativity (MMN) to unexpected pitch changes has previously been reported using EEG, suggesting a discrepancy between conscious and preattentive pitch perception in this population. Coupling MEG with EEG, our study re-examined MMN in congenital amusia in light of two factors: stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) and change size of the deviant. Individuals with and without congenital amusia passively listened to oddball sequences with either frequency (pitch) or intensity (loudness) …

Human tilt perception in a dynamic environment.

This study examines the perception of tilt and linear acceleration as sensed through the utricular otolith of the vestibular system. Any sensation derived from the otolith is a consequence of the displacement of the otolith parallel to its own plane. This leads, naturally, to the definition of a sensation plane. A model is presented which defines this sensation plane. It assumes that the sacular otolith contribution is negligible, an assumption substantiated by correlation with experimental data by Schöne. Applying this model to perceived pitch angle, a simple equation is presented which relat

Speech Rhythm Perception in Japanese: Evidence From Sensorimotor Synchronisation With Connected Speech.

The rhythm of Japanese has often been described as mora-timed, a characterisation that overlooks the richer prosodic hierarchy extending from the mora to the syllable, metrical foot and prosodic word. The present study examines rhythm perception in Japanese using a recently developed sensorimotor synchronisation technique. Forty native speakers of Tokyo Japanese participated in the experiment, synchronising in time with the beat of looped sentences spoken in their native variety. Analysing frequency, accuracy and stability of synchronisation, the study showed that the mora affected the percept

The Perception of Breathiness in the Voices of Pediatric Speakers.

BACKGROUND: The perception of pediatric voice quality has been investigated using clinical protocols developed for adult voices and acoustic analyses designed to identify important physical parameters associated with normal and dysphonic pediatric voices. Laboratory investigations of adult dysphonia have included sophisticated methods, including a psychoacoustic approach that involves a single-variable matching task (SVMT), characterized by high inter- and intra-listener reliability, and analyses that include bio-inspired models of auditory perception that have provided valuable information re

An Exploratory Investigation of Pupillometry As a Measure of Tinnitus Intrusiveness on a Test of Auditory Short-Term Memory.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the potential of pupillometry to provide an objective measure of competition between tinnitus and external sounds during a test of auditory short-term memory. DESIGN: Twelve participants with chronic tinnitus and twelve control participants without tinnitus took part in the study. Pretest sessions used an adaptive method to estimate listeners' frequency discrimination threshold on a test of delayed pitch discrimination for pure tones. Target and probe tones were presented at 72 dB SPL and centered on 750 Hz±2 semitones with an ad

Agreement and reliability of tinnitus loudness matching and pitch likeness rating.

The ability to reproducibly match tinnitus loudness and pitch is important to research and clinical management. Here we examine agreement and reliability of tinnitus loudness matching and pitch likeness ratings when using a computer-based method to measure the tinnitus spectrum and estimate a dominant tinnitus pitch, using tonal or narrowband sounds. Group level data indicated a significant effect of time between test session 1 and 2 for loudness matching, likely procedural or perceptual learning, which needs to be accounted in study design. Pitch likeness rating across multiple frequencies ap

Explicit processing of melodic structure in congenital amusia can be improved by redescription-associate learning.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of musical processing. Previous research demonstrates that although explicit musical processing is impaired in congenital amusia, implicit musical processing can be intact. However, little is known about whether implicit knowledge could improve explicit musical processing in individuals with congenital amusia. To this end, we developed a training method utilizing redescription-associate learning, aiming at transferring implicit representations of perceptual states into explicit forms through verbal description and then establishing the associa

Dynamic visual speech perception in a patient with visual form agnosia.

To examine the role of dynamic cues in visual speech perception, a patient with visual form agnosia (DF) was tested with a set of static and dynamic visual displays of three vowels. Five conditions were tested: (1) auditory only which provided only vocal pitch information, (2) dynamic visual only, (3) dynamic audiovisual with vocal pitch information, (4) dynamic audiovisual with full voice information and (5) static visual only images of postures during vowel production. DF showed normal performance in all conditions except the static visual only condition in which she scored at chance. Contro

Estimating Pitch Information From Simulated Cochlear Implant Signals With Deep Neural Networks.

Cochlear implant (CI) users, even with substantial speech comprehension, generally have poor sensitivity to pitch information (or fundamental frequency, F0). This insensitivity is often attributed to limited spectral and temporal resolution in the CI signals. However, the pitch sensitivity markedly varies among individuals, and some users exhibit fairly good sensitivity. This indicates that the CI signal contains sufficient information about F0, and users' sensitivity is predominantly limited by other physiological conditions such as neuroplasticity or neural health. We estimated the upper lim
