Earliest mimicking of flowering plants by insects.

Mimicry, a complex visual defensive strategy, shapes ecological dynamics and evolution by influencing predator-prey interactions. Insect mimicry of plant structures drives their co-evolution with plants. However, fossil evidence of insect-angiosperm mimicry is exceedingly scarce and has previously been confined to the Cenozoic, although the occurrence of angiosperms extends far earlier. Here, the earliest known insect mimicking angiosperm leaves, Dryadithone cretacea gen. et sp. nov. (Neuroptera: Ithonidae), is reported from the mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber. The sophisticated camouflage of this

Evolving thiazole synthases for expression in plants.

Thiazole synthases (THI4s) catalyze the synthesis of the thiazole moiety of thiamin (vitamin B1) from glycine, NAD, and a sulfur atom. The sulfur atom can originate from an active site cysteine residue, as is the case for cysteine-dependent THI4s (cys-THI4s), or from an external sulfide source, as it is for sulfide-dependent THI4s (noncys-THI4s). Cys-THI4s are also known as suicidal enzymes, as catalysis leads to enzyme inactivation, followed by protein degradation. These enzymes can be considered energy intensive and catalytically inefficient enzymes. Replacement of plant cys-THI4s with noncy

Chemical application improves stress resilience in plants.

In recent years, abiotic stresses, including droughts, floods, high temperatures, and salinity, have become increasingly frequent and severe. These stresses significantly hinder crop yields and product quality, posing substantial challenges to sustainable agriculture and global food security. Simultaneously, the rapidly growing global population exacerbates the need to enhance crop production under worsening environmental conditions. Consequently, the development of effective strategies to strengthen the resilience of crop plants against high temperatures, water scarcity, and extreme environme

The macroecology of spines on woody plants.

Spines are a major ecological innovation supporting plant defence and diversification. Spine anatomy is diverse, having arisen in multiple plant lineages from many different plant organs and parts, which may differ in relative advantages across environmental gradients. Systematic analyses of the correlates of spiny plant diversity are limited, but climate and soil properties may be important. We analysed spatial patterns of the proportional richness of spiny woody plant species (fraction of total woody species richness) and the proportional richness of species with particular spine types (frac

Plants in Microgravity: Molecular and Technological Perspectives.

Plants are vital components of our ecosystem for a balanced life here on Earth, as a source of both food and oxygen for survival. Recent space exploration has extended the field of plant biology, allowing for future studies on life support farming on distant planets. This exploration will utilize life support technologies for long-term human space flights and settlements. Such longer space missions will depend on the supply of clean air, food, and proper waste management. The ubiquitous force of gravity is known to impact plant growth and development. Despite this, we still have limited knowle

Metalloenzymes involved in carotenoid biosynthesis in plants.

Carotenoids are a family of pigment compounds, a subset of which are precursors for vitamin A biosynthesis. These pigments are derived from isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP), with geranylgeranyl diphosphate being the first metabolite unique to carotenoid biosynthesis in plants, algae, fungi, some bacteria, and arthropods. This chapter highlights the metal-dependent enzymes involved in synthesizing carotenoids in plants and the current state of knowledge of their cofactors and mechanisms. Emphasis is given to spectroscopic methods used to characterize metal centers. The recently discovered heme-d

Medicinal plants: Treasure for antiviral drug discovery.

The pandemic of viral diseases like novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) prompted the scientific world to examine antiviral bioactive compounds rather than nucleic acid analogous, protease inhibitors, or other toxic synthetic molecules. The emerging viral infections significantly associated with 2019-nCoV have challenged humanity's survival. Further, there is a constant emergence of new resistant viral strains that demand novel antiviral agents with fewer side effects and cell toxicity. Despite significant progress made in immunization and regenerative medicine, numerous viruses still lack prophylact

Emerging concepts of potassium homeostasis in plants.

Potassium (K+) is an essential cation in all organisms that influences crop production and ecosystem stability. Although most soils are rich in K minerals, relatively little K+ is present in forms that are available to plants. Moreover, leaching and run-off from the upper soil layers contribute to K+ deficiencies in agricultural soils. Hence, the demand for K fertilizer is increasing worldwide. K+ regulates multiple processes in cells and organs, with K+ deficiency resulting in decreased plant growth and productivity. Here, we discuss the complexity of the reactive oxygen species-calcium-hormo

Plants obey (and disobey) the island rule.

The island rule predicts that small animals evolve to become larger on islands, while large animals evolve to become smaller. It has been studied for over half a century, and its validity is fiercely debated. Here, we provide a perspective on the debate by conducting a test of the island rule in plants. Results from an extensive dataset on islands in the southwest Pacific illustrate that plant stature and leaf area obey the island rule, but seed size does not. Our results indicate that the island rule may be more pervasive than previously thought and that support for its predictions varies amo

Plants with neurotoxic potential in undernourished subjects.

The consumption by humans of plants with potential to induce neurological disorders is widespread, but overt disease surfaces only when the subject's toxic threshold is exceeded. Excessive intake arising from food dependency in the setting of hunger, chronic undernutrition, vitamin deficiency, inadequate detoxication, or other individual susceptibility, can trigger acute encephalopathy (lychee, ackee fruits), sub-acute spastic paraparesis (grasspea, cassava root/leaves) or ataxic neuropathy (cassava root flour). While these disorders are very rarely encountered in high-income countries, they a

Cryptochrome-Related Abiotic Stress Responses in Plants.

It is well known that light is a crucial environmental factor that has a fundamental role in plant growth and development from seed germination to fruiting. For this process, plants contain versatile and multifaceted photoreceptor systems to sense variations in the light spectrum and to acclimate to a range of ambient conditions. Five main groups of photoreceptors have been found in higher plants, cryptochromes, phototropins, UVR8, zeitlupes, and phytochromes, but the last one red/far red wavelengths photoreceptor is the most characterized. Among the many responses modulated by phytochromes, t

In Pursuit of Vitamin D in Plants.

Vitamin D deficiency is a global concern. Much research has concentrated on the endogenous synthesis of vitamin D in human skin following exposure to ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280-315 nm). In many regions of the world there is insufficient UV-B radiation during winter months for adequate vitamin D production, and even when there is sufficient UV-B radiation, lifestyles and concerns about the risks of sun exposure may lead to insufficient exposure and to vitamin D deficiency. In these situations, dietary intake of vitamin D from foods or supplements is important for maintaining optimal vit

Formation of triploid plants via possible polyspermy.

Polyploidization is a common phenomenon in angiosperms, and polyploidy has played a major role in the long-term diversification and evolutionary success of plants. Triploid plants are considered as the intermediate stage in the formation of stable autotetraploid plants, and this pathway of tetraploid formation is known as the triploid bridge. As for the mechanism of triploid formation among diploid populations, fusion of an unreduced gamete with a reduced gamete is generally accepted. In addition, the possibility of polyspermy has been proposed for maize, wheat and some orchids, although it ha
