This review of the literature has revealed that isotonic fluids, such as 0.9 percent sodium chloride and Ringer's lactate, are effective plasma volume expanders. Despite the continued use of a variety of colloid solutions in resuscitation, there is no good evidence to document a benefit of these solutions over the crystalloid solutions. Plasma levels of calcium, phosphorus, immunoreactive calcitonin (iCT), immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (iPTH), and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were measured in patients affected by tumors of various organs: 22 breast, 41 lung, 23 kidney, 16 gastrointestinal tract, and 8 other types, iCT plasma level was elevated in 53.6% of patients with bronchogenic cancer, in 31.8% with breast cancer, in 65.3% with renal cancer, in 31.2% with gastrointestinal cancer, and in 62.5% with other tumors. Trapped plasma in the microhematocrit.

The amount of trapped plasma in the microhematocrit red blood cell column of samples from 25 normal individuals and 102 patients was investigated. The mean value for the normal individuals was 1.53%, and the mean values for the samples from the patient groups ranged from 1.41% to 1.82%. These groups included patients with sickle cell disease, iron deficiency, and hereditary spherocytosis. The glycosaminoglycans of human plasma.

A method is proposed for the measurement of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) on 5-10 ml of plasma. It is based on the adsorption of GAG on small ECTEOLA columns followed by measurement of the hexuronic acid in the NaCl eluates. Routine use of the method has indicated the presence of a GAG fraction that adsorbs readily on ECTEOLA ("free" GAG) and of another that adsorbs on it only after treatment with papain ("bound" GAG). Radioimmunoassay of ACTH in plasma.

Techniques are described in detail for a radioimmunoassay of plasma adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) that is capable of detecting hormone in unextracted normal human plasma at 1:5 dilution under the conditions described. The sensitivity of the assay is at the level of 1 mumug/ml (equivalent to 0.014 mU/100 ml).
