Calcium-Diacylglycerol Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor I (CalDAG-GEFI) has been implicated in platelet aggregation signaling in CalDAG-GEFI knockouts. Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a bleeding disorder caused by quantitative (type 1 or 3) or qualitative (type 2A/2B/2M/2N) defects of circulating von Willebrand factor (VWF). Circulating VWF levels not always fully explain bleeding phenotypes, suggesting a role for alternative factors, like platelets. From 1973 to 1986 we splenectomized 181 patients with chronic ITP after platelet kinetic studies with 51Cr or 111In. Mean age at diagnosis was 34 (range 4-79 yr). Follow-up of at least 1 yr after splenectomy was available in every patient. 141 patients (78%) achieved remission (platelets greater than 100 x 10(9)/l by 3 months after splenectomy), of whom 9 subsequently relapsed. Ibrutinib is associated with bleeding-related adverse events of grade ≤ 2 in severity, and infrequently with grade ≥ 3 events. To investigate the mechanisms of bleeding and identify patients at risk, we prospectively assessed platelet function and coagulation factors in our investigator-initiated trial of single-agent ibrutinib for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. In pathologic specimen, Histoplasma capsulatum can frequently be identified by morphology and special stains such as GMS and PAS. Incidentally, we noted unusual staining of the platelet associated marker CD42b/GP1b expressed on the surface of fungal organisms. BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular surgery for patients with a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) with thrombosis requires careful perioperative anticoagulation therapy. When cardiovascular surgery is required for patients having 'remote' HIT, such as those who had a history of HIT and platelet factor-4/heparin antibodies turned out to be negative, it is recommended that re-exposure to heparin should be limited only to the intraoperative phase. OBJECTIVE: Characterize the diagnosis of PDA and the distribution of pretreatment platelet count in pharmacologically managed PDA in infants ≤1500 g and assess the relationship of platelet count to serious morbidities.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective, observational study. In 40 hospitals, data were collected on PDA, including pretreatment platelet count. Distribution of platelet count was examined. The association of platelet count and clinical outcomes of IVH, NEC and PDA closure prior to discharge were examined. Chi-square test was used to compare outcomes by platelet count groups.
