Asynchronous Synchronization: A Spatially Explicit Agent-Based Model Simulating Ficus Trees and Their Obligate Wasp Pollinator.

The study of figs (Ficus spp., Moraceae) has received considerable attention in the scientific literature, due to the genus' large number of species (700), pollination mutualism with Agaonid wasps, and its role as a keystone food resource in tropical ecosystems. Temporal sexual separation in hermaphroditic Ficus and asynchronous flowering among individuals within populations creates problems in supporting a viable population of dependent pollinator wasp species. To maintain the short-lived wasp populations, Ficus populations must provide a continuous temporal sequence of flowering trees, which…

The lady's 'slippery' orchid: functions of the floral trap and aphid mimicry in a hoverfly-pollinated Phragmipedium species in Brazil.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Trap flowers are fascinating cases of adaptation, often linked to oviposition-site mimicry systems. Some trap flowers do not imprison pollinators for a pre-determined period, but rather force them to move through a specific path, manipulating their movements in a way that culminates in pollen transfer, often as they leave through a secondary opening. METHODS: We investigated the previously unknown pollination system of the lady's slipper orchid Phragmipedium vittatum and assessed the function of micro-morphological traits of its trap flowers. KEY RESULTS: Our observation…

An elevational gradient in floral traits and pollinator assemblages in the Neotropical species Costus guanaiensis var. tarmicus in Peru.

Different populations of plant species can adapt to their local pollinators and diverge in floral traits accordingly. Floral traits are subj … pollinator. However, we could not rule out the possibility of the beginning of a bee-to-hummingbird pollination shift in the highest-studied site. Our study is one of the few geographic-scale analyses of floral trait and pollinator assemblage variation in tropical plant species. Our results broaden our understanding of plant-pollinator interactions beyond tem …

Grayanotoxin I variation across tissues and species of Rhododendron suggests pollinator-herbivore defence trade-offs.

Grayanotoxin I (GTX I) is a major toxin in leaves of Rhododendron species, where it provides a defence against insect and vertebrate herbivores. Surprisingly, it is also present in R. ponticum nectar, and this can hold important implications for plant-pollinator mutualisms. However, knowledge of GTX I distributions across the genus Rhododendron and in different plant materials is currently limited, despite the important ecological function of this toxin. Here we characterise GTX I expression in the leaves, petals, and nectar of seven Rhododendron species. Our results indicated interspecific va

Testing the effect of individual scent compounds on pollinator attraction in nature using quasi-isogenic Capsella lines.

PREMISE: Floral scent, usually consisting of multiple compounds, is a complex trait, and its role in pollinator attraction has received increasing attention. However, disentangling the effect of individual floral scent compounds is difficult due to the complexity of isolating the effect of single compounds by traditional methods. METHODS: Using available quasi-isogenic lines (qILs) that were generated as part of the original mapping of the floral scent volatile-related loci CNL1 (benzaldehyde) and TPS2 (β-ocimene) in Capsella, we generated four genotypes that should only differ in these two c

The Pleurothallis crateriformis complex (Orchidaceae): undescribed diversity and pollination biology of a newly recognized species group from Ecuador and Peru.

A new complex of species is recognized within Pleurothallis subgenus Pleurothallis section Macrophyllae-Fasciculatae, comprising P. craterif … non-resupinate flowers, and extra-labellar nectar-like liquid. These attributes suggest a different pollination mechanism within P. sect. Macrophyllae-Fasciculatae, involving a shift from nototribic to sternotribic pollination. A possible case of morphological convergent evolution between the P. crateriformis complex and a group of non-resupinate Pleurothalli …

Conflicting Dynamics of Galling and Pollination: Arastichus gallicola (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae), a Specialized Parasitic Galler in Pistillate Flowers of Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum (Araceae).

In the complex dynamics of plant-insect interactions, the specialized galling of reproductive structures presents unique evolutionary adaptations. This study investigates the parasitic relationship between Arastichus gallicola (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae), an ovary-galling wasp, and the inflorescences of Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum (Araceae). We employed field experiments and histological analyses to investigate the mechanisms driving this interaction. We reveal that ovule fertilization is not required for gall formation; however, pollination substantially enhances gall retention by reducing i…

Two new species of Rhipidoglossum (Orchidaceae, Angraecinae) from Central Africa, probably pollinated by settling moths.

A revision of Central African specimens of Rhipidoglossum has revealed two new species from the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) and the lowland and peripheric forests of the Guineo-Congolian rainforest block. Rhipidoglossum acuminifolium sp. nov. is endemic to the CVL and is morphologically related to R. delepierreanum from the Western Rift Mountains. This disjunction may suggest historical connectivity or long-distance dispersal between these montane systems. Footage from Mount Cameroon recorded the settling moth Afroracotis cf. squalida (Lepidoptera, Erebidae) as a potential pollinator of R. ac

Warming-driven shifts in floral traits generate flower-pollinator size mismatch and decrease reproductive output.

Plant-pollinator interactions are essential for maintaining pollination services but may be sensitive to disruption from climate change. Higher temperatures can reduce flower size, nectar availability, and other floral traits, and shorten pollinator tongue and increase body size. This could, in turn, reduce flower-pollinator size matching, leading to difficulties accessing nectar and effectively transferring pollen between flowers. However, the effects of climate change on plant-pollinator trait matching are rarely experimentally tested. We conducted a 2-year simulated warming experiment and a…

More flowers, more pollinators, less fruit: drought increases insect visitation but reduces yield in cucumber.

Climate change intensifies drought frequency, posing risks to pollinators both directly and indirectly through changes in floral resource av … ological limitations on fruit development, such as female flower abortion, rather than insufficient pollination. These findings suggest that cucumber-pollinator interactions are resilient, or even enhanced, under drought from the pollinator perspective, while plants incur reproductive costs. This asymmetry highlights that climate-driven changes in plant trait …

Disturbance Mosaics Shape Multiple Pollinator Taxa Across Spatial and Temporal Scales in Fire-Managed Forests.

Because forests are critical to a large fraction of global pollinator diversity, there is great interest in better understanding how changes in forest cover, structure, and composition affect these essential organisms. Fire is one of the key drivers of such changes worldwide, yet the effects of variation in fire regimes on pollinator communities remain poorly understood. We tested how fire history, roads, and tree composition jointly influence the richness, abundance, assemblage composition, and trait structure of bees, butterflies, and hover flies in a fire-managed forest landscape in the sou

A loss-of-function allele fixed during domestication reshapes nectar chemistry, microbial diversity, and pollinator visits.

Nectar is a hub for plant-pollinator interactions, yet gene-level causal links between plant genetic variation, pollinator foraging, and nectar microbial assembly remain poorly resolved. Using near-isogenic lines, innovative field time-lapse monitoring of pollinator visits, and long-read amplicon sequencing of nectar microbiota, we show that a natural single-nucleotide variant at a cell-wall invertase gene (HaCWINV2) controls sunflower nectar chemistry and influences both pollinators and microbes. Plants homozygous for a loss-of-function HaCWINV2 allele produce sucrose-rich nectar, resulting i

Brain metabolomics in an insect pollinator: impacts of CO2 and cold-induced anaesthesia alone and in combination with neonicotinoid exposure.

Characterizing the effect of pesticides on pollinators is essential in the strive to protect biodiversity while maintaining efficient food production. Metabolomics offers detailed insight into the physiological response to pesticides. The impact of pre-dissection and dissection methodology on the metabolic response remains largely unknown, as does their possible effect on the measured metabolic response to pesticide exposure. Three different pre-dissection treatments were evaluated in Eristalis tenax: carbon dioxide, ice or no anaesthesia. Brain dissections were conducted at room temperature o

Controlling Varroa destructor infestations in managed honeybee colonies limits virus spillover into wild pollinator communities.

Given recent pathogen-mediated pollinator declines, there is concern regarding virus spillover from managed honeybees to wild pollinators. While the parasitic mite Varroa destructor specializes on honeybees, the viruses it transmits are widespread throughout pollinator communities. Here, we investigated whether beekeeper control of varroa mites influences the magnitude of deformed wing virus (DWV) spillover into wild pollinators. We sampled 27 apiaries along a gradient of mite infestation, screening nearly 1000 pollinators and 350 flowers for DWV via quantitative PCR. We found that controlling

Vertebrates can be more important pollinators than invertebrates on islands: the case of Malva (=Lavatera) arborea L.

Premise of the study: On islands, flowering plants tend to be more generalist in their pollination needs, as insects (the main pollinators of flowering plants) are underrepresented in these ecosystems compared to the mainland. In addition, some vertebrate species that are typically insectivorous or granivorous on the mainland are forced to broaden their diet and consume other resources such as nectar or pollen on the islands. The shrub Malva arborea, with its large and colourful flowers, attracts different groups of potential pollinators. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of verteb…

Pollen production per flower increases with floral display size across animal-pollinated flowering plants.

PREMISE: The number of open flowers on a plant (i.e., floral display size) can influence plant fitness by increasing pollinator attraction. However, diminishing marginal fitness returns with increasing floral display are expected as pollinators tend to visit more flowers per plant consecutively. An extended flower visitation sequence increases the fraction of ovules disabled by self-pollination (ovule discounting) and reduces the fraction of a plant's own pollen that is exported to sire seeds in other plants (pollen discounting). Hermaphroditic species with a genetic system that prevents self-…

Determination of neonicotinoids and butenolide residues in avian and insect pollinators and their ambient environment in Western Canada (2017, 2018).

To examine the spatial, and temporal variation and potential sources of pesticide concentrations, primarily neonicotinoid insecticides, in hummingbirds in western Canada, we sampled their cloacal fluid from sites in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, Canada in 2017-2018. At a sub-sample of those sites, we also measured pesticides in honey bee (Apis mellifera) nectar, water, and sediment. We collected cloacal fluid from 5 species of hummingbirds (n = 26 sites) in British Columbia (BC) and Saskatchewan, Canada, and nectar from honey bee hives (n = 4 sites), water and sediment (n = 18 sites) in t

Pollinators shift to nectar robbers when florivory occurs, with effects on reproductive success in Iris bulleyana (Iridaceae).

Studies have indicated that florivory and nectar robbing may reduce reproductive success of host plants. However, whether and how these effects might interact when plants are simultaneously attacked by both florivores and nectar robbers still needs further investigation. We used Iris bulleyana to detect the interactions among florivory, nectar robbing and pollination, and moreover, their effects on plant reproductive success. Field investigations and hand-pollination treatments were conducted on two experimental plots from a natural population, in which Experimental plot was protected from flo…
