Delayed appearance of popliteal cyst caused by a bullet.

A unique case of popliteal cyst apparently caused by a bullet that penetrated the knee joint 30 years previously was recently encountered. No similar case was found in the English-language literature (3, 9, 12). Removal of bullets adjacent to joints is recommended.

A Popliteal Cyst Responsible for Acute Lower Limb Ischemia.

We report the case of a 68-year-old man complaining of sudden intermittent claudication of the left limb. The patient was rapidly diagnosed with duplex ultrasound (DUS), computed tomography angiography, and magnetic resonance angiography as having a popliteal cyst (PC) compressing the popliteal artery, responsible for intermittent claudication. The patient underwent DUS-guided PC aspiration allowing symptoms resolution. However, he presented 3 recurrent ischemic syndromes from brutal claudication to more severe ischemia in a 3-month period, with increasing severity of the symptoms, treated wit…

Unusual Presentation of Popliteal Cyst on Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Popliteal cyst commonly presents as an ellipsoid mass with uniform low signal intensity on T1-weighted magnetic resonance images and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. Here, we describe a popliteal cyst with unusual appearance on magnetic resonance imaging, including heterogeneous intermediate signal intensity on T2-weighted images. Arthroscopic cyst decompression revealed that the cyst was filled with necrotic synovial villi, indicative of rheumatoid arthritis. Arthroscopic enlargement of unidirectional valvular slits with synovectomy was useful for the final diagnosis and treatment…

[Long-term results after excision of a popliteal cyst].

The objective was to evaluate long term results after removal of a popliteal cyst with special focus on recurrence rate and associated intraarticular pathology. Between 1982 and 1995 71 patients (23 women and 48 men between 21 and 75 years of age) underwent removal of a popliteal cyst. An additional arthroscopy of the knee joint was carried out in 51 consecutive patients starting in 1988. The mean follow up was 6.5 years (2 to 15 years), 66 patients (93%) were available. The subjective satisfaction with the outcome was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS) graded from 1 (highly satisfie…

Anterior dissection of popliteal cyst causing anterior compartment syndrome.

Dissection and rupture of popliteal cysts occur commonly. We describe a case of a 13-year-old girl with polyarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who presented with anterior tibial swelling and dropped foot. She was found to have dissecting popliteal cyst resulting in anterior compartment syndrome.

Dissecting popliteal cyst: an unusual complication of Reiter's syndrome.

A case of Reiter's syndrome associated with a dissecting popliteal cyst mimicking deep vein thrombophlebitis is reported. The cyst was diagnosed by arthrography and responded to intra-articular injection of corticosteroids. The diagnosis of a dissecting popliteal cyst should be considered in a patient with arthritis of the knee joint from any cause and who develops signs and symptoms of thrombophlebitis.

Arthroscopic evaluation of anatomical variations of the oblique popliteal ligament and their association with popliteal cyst formation.

INTRODUCTION: The posteromedial compartment of the knee houses several important anatomical structures, including the oblique popliteal ligament (OPL), an accessory insertion tendon of the semimembranosus muscle. Popliteal cysts develop from the synovial bursa located between the medial gastrocnemius and the semimembranosus, typically secondary to intra-articular pathologies causing effusion. This study aimed to describe the normal anatomy of the postero-medial capsule of the knee and its anatomical variations, particularly in the presence of popliteal cysts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a…

Arthroscopic debridement of loose bodies from a popliteal cyst.

To our knowledge, arthroscopic removal of loose bodies from a popliteal cyst has never been reported in the medical literature. This article describes our technique for removing loose bodies from a popliteal cyst and verifies that the procedure can be performed safely and effectively.A 52-year-old man had progressively worsening right knee pain and swelling of 3 years' duration that had been treated conservatively for 6 months. On physical examination, there was boggy swelling, a palpable popliteal cyst, crepitus with range of motion, and diffuse discomfort and tenderness about the knee. Magne…

Multilobulated popliteal cyst after a failed total knee arthroplasty.

Popliteal cyst is a rare finding after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), but when present, it might indicate a malfunction of the TKA related to generation of wear-particles, or loosening. We present a case of a multilobulated popliteal cyst developing in a patient 8 years after primary TKA. The cyst was associated with a mechanical prosthetic loosening. The primary complaint of the patient was pain in the posterior region of the knee. A two-stage procedure consisting of cyst excision at first, followed after 5 months by a revision TKA was performed. Intraoperatively, a darkish, multilobulated cy…

Unusual lateral presentation of popliteal cyst: a case report.

The commonest cyst to occur in the popliteal region is the popliteal cyst and over the past years it has received much clinical attention. The commonest position of the popliteal cyst is in the posterosuperior aspect of the medial femoral condyle. The present case report describes a rare case of popliteal cyst, which was found on the postero-superior aspect of the lateral condyle of the femur. Interestingly, there are fewer reports of popliteal cysts occurring in the postero-superior aspect of the lateral condyle. We as anatomists describe the topographical anatomy of an unusual presentation o…

Dissecting a popliteal cyst after failed unicompartmental knee arthroplasty.

This report documents the first case of a popliteal cyst in a knee with failed unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). The cyst was treated successfully with the creation of a small communication hole between the posteromedial compartment and the popliteal cyst under direct arthroscopic visualization. This was followed by the replacement of a worn polyethylene insert via a small arthrotomy. Three months later, the popliteal mass had disappeared. This case suggests that a dissecting popliteal cyst may occur after UKA as one of the signs of a malfunction. It also suggests that treatment should…
