Environmental conditions in health care facilities in low- and middle-income countries: Coverage and inequalities.

Safe environmental conditions and the availability of standard precaution items are important to prevent and treat infection in health care facilities (HCFs) and to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets for health and water, sanitation, and hygiene. Baseline coverage estimates for HCFs have yet to be formed for the SDGs; and there is little evidence describing inequalities in coverage. To address this, we produced the first coverage estimates of environmental conditions and standard precaution items in HCFs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs); and explored factors associat

Successfully controlling malaria in South Africa.

Following major successes in malaria control over the past 75 years, South Africa is now embarking on a malaria elimination campaign with the goal of zero local transmission by the year 2018. The key control elements have been intensive vector control, primarily through indoor residual spraying, case management based on parasitological diagnosis using evidence-based drug policies with artemisinin-based combination therapy since 2001, active health promotion in partnership with communities living in the malaria transmission areas, and cross-border collaborations. Political commitment and long-t

Assessing and mitigating the risks for polio outbreaks in polio-free countries - Africa, 2013-2014.

Since 1988, when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) began, the annual number of polio cases has decreased by >99%. Only three countries remain that have never interrupted wild poliovirus (WPV) transmission: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Since 2001, outbreaks have occurred in 31 formerly polio-free counties in Africa, with outbreaks in 25 countries caused by WPV originating in Nigeria (2-4). After the declaration of the World Health Assembly of polio eradication as a programmatic emergency in 2012, efforts to identify areas at high risk for importation-associated outbreaks and

Community case management for former jail inmates: its impacts on rearrest, drug use, and HIV risk.

Dramatically increasing incarceration rates in the United States have led to large concentrations of formerly imprisoned people in poverty-stricken urban areas. Therefore, identifying ways to help inmates who exhibit multiple, serious problems and who are at great risk of experiencing poor postrelease outcomes is especially important to urban communities, as well as to service providers and policymakers concerned about these communities. Our research provides evidence about the effectiveness of one strategy, called Health Link, which recruited adult women and adolescent men while they were inc

Perspectives of practitioners providing weight management support for young adults with obesity in an urban setting in Sri Lanka: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: This study explored perspectives of practitioners providing weight management support for urban-dwelling young adults (18-35 years) with obesity in Sri Lanka, addressing an important evidence gap in understanding obesity management from a provider perspective. STUDY DESIGN: This descriptive qualitative study employed face-to-face semi-structured interviews, and the data were analysed using a framework approach within thematic analysis. STUDY SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Eight purposively selected practitioners involved in weight management in the Colombo District, Sri Lanka, were in

Rurality and use of specialty clinic referrals in primary care management of chronic pain: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: We compared referrals to pain management specialists between rural and urban primary care clinics within a single academic healthcare network (integrating hospital and outpatient services) in the Southeastern United States. MATERIALS & METHODS: We retrospectively queried primary care visits in 2022 with chronic pain-associated diagnosis codes, stratified by rural vs. urban clinic location. Referrals (pain clinic, orthopedics, neurology, rheumatology, or any of the above) were tracked through June 2024 and analyzed using Cox proportional hazard models. While some patients were refe

Prevalence of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease across the lifespan: a population-based epidemiological study.

OBJECTIVES: This population-based study aimed to determine age-standardised prevalence of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) across the lifespan using multiple case ascertainment sources. DESIGN: Point-prevalence epidemiological study in the Auckland Region of New Zealand (NZ). SETTING: Multiple case ascertainment sources including primary care centres, hospital services, neuromuscular disease registry, community-based organisations and self-referral were used to identify potentially eligible participants. PARTICIPANTS: Adults (≥16 years, n=207, 87.7%) and children (<16 years, n=29, 12.3%) w

The 2012 International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections European Collaborative Clinical Group report on the diagnosis and management of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections in Europe.

The European Collaborative Clinical Group (ECCG) was inaugurated at the 26th International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI) Congress in Riga, Latvia 2011. The ECCG is a network of over 100 sexually transmitted infection specialists who have come together to conduct questionnaire-based research across the European region. It is expected that this work will focus and direct guideline development. A central core group of the ECCG has also been established who are responsible for identifying suitable survey questions that will be carried out but only after approval by the full

Integrating community-based verbal autopsy into civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS): system-level considerations.

BACKGROUND: Reliable and representative cause of death (COD) statistics are essential to inform public health policy, respond to emerging health needs, and document progress towards Sustainable Development Goals. However, less than one-third of deaths worldwide are assigned a cause. Civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems in low- and lower-middle-income countries are failing to provide timely, complete and accurate vital statistics, and it will still be some time before they can provide physician-certified COD for every death. Proposals: Verbal autopsy (VA) is a method to ascert

The Zika outbreak of the 21st century.

The Zika virus outbreak has captivated the attention of the global audience and information has spread rapidly and wildly through the internet and other media channels. This virus was first identified in 1947, when it was isolated from a sentinel rhesus monkey placed by British scientists working at the Yellow Fever Research Laboratory located in the Zika forest area of Uganda, hence its name, and is transmitted primarily by the mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti. The fact that the rhesus macaque is an Asian species being placed in an African forest brings to mind the possibility of rapid adaptati
