A number of recent reports have described the isolation and characterization of Brucella strains from a wide variety of marine mammals such as seals, porpoises, dolphins and a minke whale. These strains were identified as brucellae by conventional typing tests. However, their overall characteristics were not assimilable to those of any of the six currently recognized Brucella species and it was suggested that they comprise a new nomen species to be called Brucella maris. In the present study we analysed DNA polymorphism at the omp2 locus of 33 marine mammal Brucella strains isolated from seals…

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances with phosphorus headgroups (P-PFAS) are emerging alternatives to legacy perfluoroalkyl substances, and research on their environmental fate is urgently needed. We measured P-PFAS concentrations in liver and other tissues (i.e., heart, intestine, spleen, kidney, pancreas, stomach, lung, muscle, skin, and blubber) from finless porpoises and whales stranded along the East China Sea coast during 2009 and 2019. The median hepatic concentrations of major P-PFAS, including perfluorohexanephosphonate, perfluorooctanephosphonate, perfluorodecylphosphonate (PFDPA), 6:…

Asymmetric genitalia and lateralized mating behaviors occur in several taxa, yet whether asymmetric morphology in one sex correlates or coevolves with lateralized mating behavior in the other sex remains largely unexplored. While lateralized mating behaviors are taxonomically widespread, among mammals they are only known in the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Males attempt copulation by approaching a female exclusively on her left side. To understand if this unusual lateralized behavior may have coevolved with genital morphology, we quantified the shape of female and male harbor porpoise

In this study, organ samples from 426 common seals Phoca vitulina, 298 harbour porpoises Phocoena phocoena, 34 grey seals Halichoerus grypus and 10 other marine mammals were assessed for the presence of Brucella species. Forty-seven common seals, 2 harbour porpoises and 1 grey seal were found to be positive for these bacteria. A total of 91 Brucella strains were successfully isolated, due to the fact that Brucella spp. were found in more than one organ sample in 15 animals. The primary organ in which the bacteria were present was the lung. In addition, 2 strains were isolated from lungworms (P…

In odontocete cetaceans (toothed whales, dolphins, and porpoises), a palatopharyngeal sphincter permanently anchors the laryngeal inlet in the nasopharynx and isolates the airway from the gut tube. Using an MRI data set of a pacific white-sided dolphin (Aethalodelphis obliquidens), together with dissections of the dolphin and two neonatal harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), we show that the sphincter is formed by fusion of part of the superior constrictor of the pharyngeal wall to the soft palate. The part of the superior constrictor that participates in forming the sphincter is brought clo…

INTRODUCTION: Whales, dolphins, and porpoises are susceptible to infections by protozoan and metazoan parasites.
METHODS: In this study, tissue samples, as well as flatworms and roundworms, were collected from a common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), three short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), two striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), a harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), a long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas), and a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus). These samples were molecularly analyzed.
RESULTS: In one D. delphis, Toxoplasma gondii was detected in multi…

Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) is a global threat to cetaceans. We report a novel morbillivirus from a Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) that stranded in Maui, Hawaii in 2018 that is dissimilar to the beaked whale morbillivirus previously identified from Hawaii and to other CeMV strains. Histopathological findings included intranuclear inclusions in bile duct epithelium, lymphoid depletion, rare syncytial cells and non-suppurative meningitis. Cerebellum and lung tissue homogenates were inoculated onto Vero.DogSLAMtag cells for virus isolation and cytopathic effects were observed, resulting

The analysis of the literature on communication of a hemostasis and vitamin C has allowed to assert, that its deficiency accelerates lipid peroxidation and reduces potential at porpoises, and it conducts to activation platelets, to acceleration of continuous intravascular blood coagulation of and to reduction in tolerance to thrombin. High dozes of vitamin C influences a hemostasis strengthens lipid peroxidation similarly to prooxidizers. Entering high dozes of vitamin C at the statuses menacing weith thromboses, it is desirable to supervise a level of markers of intravascular blood coagulatio…

Whales (cetaceans, including dolphins and porpoises) are superbly adapted to life in water, but retain vestiges of their terrestrial ancestry, particularly the need to breathe air. Their respiratory tract exhibits many differences from their closest relatives, the terrestrial artiodactyls (even toed ungulates). In this review, we describe the anatomy of cetacean respiratory adaptions. These include protective features (e.g., preventing water incursions during breathing or swallowing, mitigating effects of pressure changes during diving/ascent) and unique functions (e.g., underwater sound produ…

Marine mammal skin, in contact with seawater containing diverse chemicals, reflects species health and environmental quality. The contributions of natural toxins and anthropogenic contaminants to the effects of such chemical mixtures remain poorly quantified. Using skin fibroblast cells from the Indo-Pacific finless porpoise and humpback dolphin, we assessed the toxic potential of seawater extracts, focusing on cytotoxicity and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Among the 38 studied chemicals prevalent in seawater, four algal toxins were 1-6 orders of magnitude more potent

Information about the parasite fauna of spectacled porpoises and cetaceans from New Zealand waters in general is scarce. This study takes advantage of material archived in collections of the Otago Museum in Dunedin and Massey University in Auckland, sampled from cetacean species found stranded along the New Zealand coastline between 2007 and 2014. Parasites from seven species of cetaceans (spectacled porpoise, Phocoena dioptrica (n = 2 individuals examined); pygmy sperm whale (n = 1); long-finned pilot whale, Globicephala melas (n = 1); Risso's dolphin, Grampus griseus (n = 1); short-beaked co…

Previously, we reported the isolation of Bartonella henselae from the blood of harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) and loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from the North Carolina coast. Hematologic, pathologic, and microbiologic findings surrounding the death of a juvenile captive beluga in Vancouver initiated an outbreak investigation designed to define the molecular prevalence of Bartonella infection in belugas. Using polymerase chain reaction analyses targeting the intergenic spacer region (ITS), two B. henselae ITS strains were identified in 78% of captive and free-ranging hunter-har…

Small Gram negative coccobacilli isolated from seals, porpoises, dolphins and from an otter road casualty were identified as Brucellae by their colonial and cell morphology, staining characteristics, biochemical activity, agglutination by monospecific antisera and susceptibility to lysis by Brucella specific bacteriophage. Their characterisation, including metabolic profiles, is described. These strains could not be assigned to recognised nomen species of the genus Brucella and it is suggested that they comprise a new nomen species to be called B. maris (sp. nov., type strain 2/94). It is furt…

Members of the morbillivirus genus, canine distemper (CDV), phocine distemper virus (PDV), and the cetacean viruses of dolphins and porpoises exhibit high levels of CNS infection in their natural hosts. CNS complications are rare for measles virus (MV) and are not associated with rinderpest virus (RPV) and peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) infection. However, it is possible that all morbilliviruses infect the CNS but in some hosts are rapidly cleared by the immune response. In this study, we assessed whether RPV and PPRV have the potential to be neurovirulent. We describe the outcome of …
