Capsulorhexis has become the preferred method of anterior capsulotomy, and untoward effects have not been frequently noted. Nevertheless, distinct complications of continuous tear anterior capsulotomy are now recognized. These include capsular bag hyperdistention, shrinkage of the anterior capsule opening with visual loss and/or intraocular lens decentration, and lens epithelial cell hyperproliferation on the posterior lens capsule. The latter has not been reported and may be associated wit reduction or closure of laser posterior capsulotomies in the form of a "string of pearls" around the cap

Case reports of two patients who developed a sudden hypotony with visual loss after an uneventful extracapsular cataract-extraction with posterior chamber lens implantation. There is evidence for the reason to be a contraction of the posterior capsule. This may lead to a traction at the ciliary body and a ciliochoroidal detachment. The rapid improvement of vision and intraocular pressure after Nd-YAG-Laser capsulotomy supports the postulated theory of this rarely discussed complication of intraocular lens implantation after extracapsular cataract-extraction. In this situation we recommend a ca

The objective of this retrospective study was to determine the incidence of retinal detachment (RD) in patients following cataract extraction with intraocular lens placement and after neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy. This study comprised 1092 patients (1168 eyes) who had cataract extraction and related procedures between January 1986 and December 1992 identified from the coding and billing database. Of the 1092 patients, 215 (244 eyes) had had Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. Their charts were reviewed for incidence of RD, and these data were correlated with age, sex, axial length, surgical

INTRODUCTION: Posterior capsular opacification is the commonest complication of cataract surgery. It is treated with Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. However, after treatment, cases of cystoid macular edema have been reported. The purpose of this study was to measure the foveal thickness change after Nd:YAG capsulotomy using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in order to clarify the physiopathology of this edema.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective, single-center study was conducted on patients who underwent Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy between May 2008 and November 2009. All patients received the same

We present one case of capsular bag distension associated with lens phacoemulsification, capsulorhexis and posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) insertion. Capsular bag distension is a rare postoperative complication of continuous tear anterior capsulotomy and presents the following characteristics: (1) postoperative myopic over-refraction; (2) shallowing of the anterior chamber associated with anterior shift of the IOL and the iris diaphragm; (3) important posterior distension of the posterior capsule and (4) sealing of the capsule to the anterior surface of the IOL. In our case, recovery

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a common complication after cataract extraction, despite the modern surgi … he peripheral anterior capsule to destroy the epithelial cells. In the capsulotomy study, a primary posterior capsulotomy was created by delivering 1 to 3 laser shots to the capsule behind an implanted intraocular lens (IOL).
RESULTS: The CO2 laser was satisfactory in sheep eyes after filling the anterior chamber with air. In rabbit eyes, however, it was technically i …

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is common after cataract surgery. Recurrence is very rare after a successful Yttrium aluminium-garnet (YAG) capsulotomy in adults. We report a case of visual axis re-opacification after a successful YAG capsulotomy for PCO in an adult. A 60-year male underwent phacoemulsification with +20.0 D acrylic hydrophobic intraocular lens implantation and silicon oil removal (SOR) five months after a successful retinal detachment repair. He underwent a capsulotomy after two months of surgery; however, the visual axis re-opacified after three more months. A YAG ante

Primary posterior capsular plaque may be encountered during cataract surgery and can compromise the visual axis. Although Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy effectively treats postoperative posterior capsular opacification, it carries recognized risks, and intraoperative management may be preferable in selected cases. This report describes a simplified Sinskey hook-guided mechanical peeling technique performed before intraocular lens implantation. In a single adult case, plaque separation was achieved through controlled tangential glide-dissection beneath the plaque using a Sinskey hook, followed by for
