PURPOSE: To identify the risk of deep femoral vein (DFV) and/or femoral vein (FV) inflow disease on venous stent patency loss in postthrombotic syndrome (PTS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included limbs with iliofemoral and iliocaval stents for PTS. Single-vessel and double-vessel inflow disease were defined on the basis of imaging of possible postthrombotic changes in the DFV/FV. Endpoints were 1-year primary patency (open stents without reintervention) and secondary patency (open stents with or without reintervention). Event-free survival was estimated usin

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to address benefits and harms of using elastic compression stockings after lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis.
METHODS: We searched 7 electronic databases through January 15, 2015, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs)/quasi-randomized trials reporting on elastic compression stocking efficacy on postthrombotic syndrome incidence, recurrent venous thromboembolism, mortality, and acute pain after deep vein thrombosis. Two reviewers independently screened records, extracted data, assessed risk of bias, and assessed confidenc

Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a common complication of deep vein thrombosis. This study aims to assess the role of recurrent venous thrombosis and inherited thrombophilia in the pathogenesis of PTS. A series of 206 patients diagnosed with lower extremity venous thrombosis were retrospectively reviewed. The PTS was observed in 30.58% of the patients. Recurrent venous thrombosis was identified in 3.4% of the patients without PTS and in 33.3% of patients with PTS (P < .001). Inherited thrombophilia alone or in association with recurrent venous thrombosis was more commonly detected when PTS was

External compression of the left iliac vein is a common finding in the general population. It may predispose patients to the development of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the left leg and may also lead to a more complicated course than in other types of DVT. This entity has been well-described by other authors. External compression of the left iliac vein should be suspected in cases of complicated DVT or in cases of DVT with no predisposing factors. We describe a case of May-Thurner syndrome that involved a complicated treatment course, and a review of current options for diagnosis and therapy.

PURPOSE: Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is one of the long-term sequelae of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and effective symptom management in pediatric PTS remains a challenge, with interventional therapy rarely explored in this population. We present a successful case of interventional treatment pediatric PTS, resulting in a remarkable amelioration of her symptoms.
CASE REPORT: This case features a 6-year-old girl diagnosed with hyperinsulinemia, leading to a hypoglycemic coma. Following a mini-pancreatic partial pancreatectomy, she required further intensive care in the pediatric intensive car

Pediatric lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (LE-DVT) can lead to postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) and other adverse events. We investigated the outcomes of LE-DVT in children. Three groups were compared: non-line-related (Non-LR) DVT, LR DVT in neonates (LRneonates), and LR DVT in non-neonates (LRnon-neonates). A total of 339 children were included (Non-LR, n = 56; LRneonates, n = 95; and LRnon-neonates, n = 188). We found a statistically significant difference in the frequency of PTS (P = .04; 62.5%, 40.0%, and 46.3% in Non-LR, LRneonates, and LRnon-neonates, respectively), of recurrent LE-DV

BACKGROUND: Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a chronic condition in the lower extremity that develops after deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The incidence of PTS after total hip arthroplasty (THA) is not well established.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We (1) determined the incidence of PTS after DVT in patients undergoing primary THA for osteoarthritis; and (2) determined whether the incidence of PTS was greater in patients with DVT than without.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed records of all 1037 patients who underwent primary THA for osteoarthritis during a 4-year period. All patients underwent post

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical and hemodynamic outcomes after isolated first-time calf deep venous thrombosis (cDVT).
METHODS: This retrospective clinical study was set in an academic referral center. From 1990 to 1994, 617 patients were seen with acute DVT. This number included 82 patients with phlebographically confirmed cDVT. Of those patients, 50 attended the clinical assessment 6 to 10 years (mean, 8.4 years) after the acute event. All patients with cDVT underwent treatment with anticoagulant therapy (96% heparin and warfarin, 4% only warfarin

UNLABELLED: Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is characterized by edema, venous ectasia, hyperpigmentation, varicose veins, venous ulceration, and pain with calf compression after deep venous thrombosis (DVT). We determined the incidence of PTS after DVT diagnosed on screening ultrasound in patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for osteoarthritis (OA). We retrospectively reviewed the records of 1406 patients who underwent primary TKA for osteoarthritis and compared the incidence of PTS in patients without and with DVT. All patients had postoperative screening ultrasound. From t

Lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is relatively common after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA). In this study, we sought to identify whether post-thrombotic syndrome is a significant risk in patients with asymptomatic DVT after TKA and THA. Included in the study were 186 patients (203 lower extremities) who had undergone routine lower extremity venography after TKA or THA between 1989 and 1993. Patients were contacted a minimum of 7 years after surgery. Postoperative varicose veins occurred in 8% of limbs without DVT compared with 12% of limbs with DVT. Hy

BACKGROUND: Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a significant complication of pediatric deep venous thrombosis (DVT). There is a gap in the understanding of the risk factors associated with the development of pediatric PTS preventing the early identification of those patients at greatest risk, and the development of risk-stratified interventions.
OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature on prognostic factors for PTS development in pediatric patients.
METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from 1960 to December 2018 was per

BACKGROUND: Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a frequent, chronic complication of DVT. The effectiveness and safety of available treatments are unknown. The objective of this study was to systematically review the literature to assess whether pharmacologic and compression therapies are effective and safe for the treatment of PTS.
METHODS: We sought to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) via a search of PubMed, studies referenced in included publications, and studies that cited relevant literature.
RESULTS: A total of 121 titles were reviewed, 12 full-text publications were assessed f

Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a burdensome and costly complication of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) that develops in 20%-40% of patients within 2 years after proximal DVT. In the absence of effective curative treatment, management of PTS relies on its prevention after DVT. The effectiveness of elastic compression stockings (ECS) to prevent PTS is uncertain. We present an overview of published studies assessing the efficacy of ECS to prevent PTS and present the protocol for the CELEST clinical trial. While previous open-label randomized trials have reported a 50% risk reduction in PTS in patien

OBJECTIVE: We assessed whether individualized shortened duration of elastic compression stocking (ECS) therapy after acute deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is feasible without increasing the incidence of postthrombotic syndrome (PTS).
METHODS: At the outpatient clinic of the Maastricht University Medical Centre, 125 consecutive patients with confirmed proximal DVT were followed for 2 years. Villalta scores were assessed on four consecutive visits; 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after the acute event. Reflux was assessed once by duplex testing. After 6 months, patients with scores <or=4 on the Villalta c

1123 measurements of peripheral venous pressure were performed on 587 patients with a tendency towards swelling in the legs. In 93 the measurements raised suspicion of obstruction to deepvein flow, confirmed by phlebography in 91, i.e. correct positive diagnosis by venous pressure measurements in 97.8%. In 57 patients with normal venous pressure measurements but clinical suspicion of deep-venous thrombosis, phlebography always confirmed the venous-pressure measurements, which are thus superior to routine clinical examinations.

BACKGROUND: Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) refers to manifestations of chronic venous insufficiency after a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The risk of developing moderate-to-severe PTS in the very long term is largely unknown and particularly in case of distal DVT. Furthermore, the impact of DVT vs other causes of chronic venous insufficiency on long-term manifestations of PTS is also unknown.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the very long-term risk of moderate-to-severe PTS after DVT and the role that DVT plays in PTS symptoms.
METHODS: Patients with lower-limb DVT enrolled in the multicenter Optimisation

BACKGROUND: Postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a frequent chronic complication of deep venous thrombosis, yet its impact on health-related quality of life has not been well characterized. We compared generic and venous disease-specific quality of life in patients with and without PTS, and assessed whether quality of life correlated with severity of PTS.
METHODS: Subjects with previous deep venous thrombosis were participants in a study of the effects of exercise after deep venous thrombosis. We ascertained PTS and its severity using a validated clinical scale. Subjects completed generic (the 36
