The use of live animals for educational purposes is an old practice that is still employed in teaching and research institutions. However, there are several objections to this practice, whether for ethical or humanitarian reasons. Hemoglobin solution, proposed as a blood substitute, must be stable for a long period of time in order to be stockpiled and be readily available when massive clinical transfusions are required. PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Patients diagnosed with cancer at reproductive age can be offered fertility preservation, which includes options of freezing sperm (male patients), oocytes, embryos, or ovarian tissue (female patients). This is intended to provide survivors with a chance to have biological children later in life (e.g., through utilizing assisted reproductive technologies, ART). Five strains of Sporothrix schenckii preserved in sterile distilled water were found morphologically stable, viable and pure after a period ranging from 16 to 13 years, in the mycology section culture collection from the Instituto de Medicina Tropical, Universidad Central de Venezuela. Specimens sandwiched between copper planchettes were plunged up to a depth of 430 mm into coolants used for cryofixation. Pyriforms and ring forms of Babesia odocoilei were detected in thin blood smears obtained from a white-tailed deer killed by a hunter in Anderson County, Texas. Erythrocytes from the deer were cultured and the parasites maintained through 8 serial subcultures during 1 mo. The parasite was successfully established in culture using Medium 199 supplemented with either 20% deer serum or 40% normal adult bovine serum. The highest parasitemia observed was 30% and more than 4 parasites per erythrocyte were often observed. Cultured B. odocoilei remained infective for a susceptible white-tailed deer.
