3D-Printing in Congenital Cardiology: From Flatland to Spaceland.

Medical imaging has changed to a great extent over the past few decades. It has been revolutionized by three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques. Despite much of modern medicine relying on 3D imaging, which can be obtained accurately, we keep on being limited by visualization of the 3D content on two-dimensional flat screens. 3D-printing of graspable models could become a feasible technique to overcome this gap. Therefore, we printed pre- and postoperative 3D-models of a complex congenital heart defect. With this example, we intend to illustrate that these models hold value in preoperative pla…

Three-dimensional printing model of anomalous bronchi before surgery.

Lung surgeries in patients with bronchial variations have rarely been reported. Here, we describe the case of a patient along with lung cancer with variant anatomy of the right upper lobe bronchus. This variation was evaluated by three-dimensional multi-detector computed tomography angiography with bronchography and a three-dimensional printing model using rapid prototyping. The variant anterior segment bronchus (S3) of the right upper lobe arising from the middle lobe bronchus was confirmed before surgery using the printing model, which helped to determine the extent of resection required and…

Tablets with material gradients fabricated by three-dimensional printing.

Complex tablets with zero-order drug release characteristics were fabricated using three-dimensional printing processes. The matrix tablets exhibited material gradients in radial direction and had drug-free release-barrier layers on both bases. The content of model drug acetaminophen incorporated in the tablets through premixing reached up to 68% of the tablets' weight. Tablets with ethylcellulose gradients showed acceptable mechanical and pharmacotechnical properties, as indicated by crushing strength, friability, and content uniformity tests. The structure and the gradients of ethylcellulose…

Organizing pneumonia in textile printing workers: a clinical description.

In April 1992 an outbreak of severe respiratory illness occurred among aerographic textile workers in the area of Alcoi, Autonomous Community of Valencia, Spain. An epidemiological study linked this outbreak to the use of a reformulated aerosolized product, Acramin-FWN. We analyzed clinical, laboratory, and pathological data of the first 14 patients with confirmed organizing pneumonia (OP) secondary to this newly recognized occupational toxicant. The mean age of the patients was 30 yrs. The most common clinical findings were cough (86%), epistaxis (71%), dyspnoea (64%), oppressive chest pain (

Advancing bovine in vitro fertilization through 3D printing: the effect of the 3D printed materials.

Nowadays there is an increasing demand for assisted reproductive technologies due to the growth of infertility problems. Naturally, fertilization occurs in the oviduct, where the oviductal epithelial cells (OECs) secrete many molecules that affect the embryo's metabolism and protect it from oxidative stress. When the OECs are grown in 3D culture systems, they maintain a great part of their functional characteristics, making them an excellent model for in vitro fertilization (IVF) studies. In this work, we aimed to evaluate the suitability of different 3D-printing processes in conjunction with …

Influence of Print Speed on the Mechanical Performance of 3D-Printed Bio-Polymer Polylactic Acid.

This study investigates the effect of 3D printing speed on the mechanical strength of parts produced with high-speed PLA. Samples were tested according to the ISO 527-1 standard, focusing on tensile strength. The results reveal that increasing the print speed from 30 mm/s to 500 mm/s reduces the mechanical strength of the samples, although the difference is minimal and does not affect the surface quality when the material is appropriately selected. Additionally, the orientation of the samples on the build plate had a significant impact on their strength, with samples printed along the Y-axis e…

Printing New Bones: From Print-and-Implant Devices to Bioprinted Bone Organ Precursors.

Regenerating large bone defects remains a significant clinical challenge, motivating increased interest in additive manufacturing and 3D bioprinting to engineer superior bone graft substitutes. 3D bioprinting enables different biomaterials, cell types, and growth factors to be combined to develop patient-specific implants capable of directing functional bone regeneration. Current approaches to bioprinting such implants fall into one of two categories, each with their own advantages and limitations. First are those that can be 3D bioprinted and then directly implanted into the body and second t…

Optimizing post-printing drying conditions for point-of-care manufacturing of SSE-3D printed medicines.

Post-printing drying conditions could affect the quality of oral use printlets elaborated by semi-solid extrusion (SSE) 3D printing, yet their systematic characterization as Critical Process Parameters (CPPs) remains limited. This study evaluated the influence of temperature (20-40°C) and relative humidity (20-80%) on acetazolamide printlets drying process using a full factorial design (n = 27). Response variables included weight stabilization time (the time required for the batch to complete drying, operationally defined as achieving constant weight), disintegration time, dissolution profile,…

Does Printing Orientation Matter in PolyJet 3D Printed Teeth for Endodontics? A Micro-CT Analysis.

This study aimed to identify the optimal printing orientation (X, Y, or Z axis) and positioning of a mandibular molar presenting an isthmus using PolyJet™ technology. The influence of these parameters on dimensional accuracy and on the behavior of 3D-printed teeth (3DPT) during endodontic preparation with ProTaper Gold® system was evaluated. Six groups (XA, XB, YA, YB, ZA, ZB; n = 10) were printed with different axis orientations and distinct isthmus positions relative to the build platform. All samples underwent micro-computed tomography scanning before and after endodontic preparation. Regar…

Multiscale embedded printing of engineered human tissue and organ equivalents.

Creating tissue and organ equivalents with intricate architectures and multiscale functional feature sizes is the first step toward the reconstruction of transplantable human tissues and organs. Existing embedded ink writing approaches are limited by achievable feature sizes ranging from hundreds of microns to tens of millimeters, which hinders their ability to accurately duplicate structures found in various human tissues and organs. In this study, a multiscale embedded printing (MSEP) strategy is developed, in which a stimuli-responsive yield-stress fluid is applied to facilitate the printin…
