[Risk behaviours and Chlamydia trachomatis prevalence in prisoners by length of stay in prison].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Young prisoners have high-risk behaviors and socio-economic insecurity that increases vulnerability for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) acquisition. Monitoring its prevalence will help to reduce infection rates. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study from a convenience sample of prisoners aged 18-25 years. Urine samples were obtained to determine CT. A standardized and anonymous questionnaire was used to collect the study variables. RESULTS: The overall CT prevalence was 11%, significantly higher in those with less than one year in prison, who also presented higher

The impact of prison staff responses on self-harming behaviours: prisoners' perspectives.

OBJECTIVES: To further understanding of how health and correctional staff responses to self-harming behaviours influence prisoners and their subsequent actions. DESIGN: Participant-centred, qualitative methods were used to explore the complex and under-researched perspectives of self-harming male prisoners. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 adult male prisoners who had engaged in repetitive, non-suicidal self-harm during their current prison sentence, or considered doing so. The interviews were analyzed drawing on principles of thematic analysis and discourse analysis

Exploring medication safety in prisons: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Drug-related problems (DRPs), which encompass medication errors (MEs), adverse drug reactions and adverse drug events (ADEs), represent significant challenges in healthcare settings. While medication safety has been extensively studied in hospitals and primary care settings leading to development of improvement strategies, there is limited understanding of these issues within prison healthcare environments. This knowledge gap is concerning given that prisoners often have complex medication needs due to higher rates of chronic physical and mental ill health and substance use disorder

Experiences and impact of moral injury in prisons.

Moral injury is the persistent mental or emotional distress resulting from events that challenge one's moral beliefs. It is characterised by intense shame, guilt, worthlessness, disgust or anger and can contribute towards the development of serious mental disorders. The nature of working in prisons means that staff often face physically and psychologically challenging scenarios, and prison staff report high rates of mental ill-health and suicidal thoughts. Equally, detainees may be especially vulnerable to moral injury-related mental health difficulties having engaged in illicit actions and be

Cancer screening in prisons: lessons for health providers.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle factors place those who experience incarceration at increased risk of morbidity and mortality from a range of preventable diseases, including cancer. METHODS: Two nurses were employed for a period of 6months to facilitate bowel and breast cancer screening of prisoners across four correctional centres in Queensland. We identify factors impacting on cancer screening in prisons and document the outcomes for those screened. RESULTS: Both screening programs produced a positivity rate of ∼17% in those screened, with 23 individuals returning a positive faecal occult blood test

The identification of synthetic cannabinoids in English prisons.

Synthetic cannabinoids (SC) are extremely prevalent within the prison system and cause problems for prisoners, law enforcement and health services. SC are often soaked into paper then posted into prisons therefore one of the aims of this research is to collaborate with Rapiscan Systems Ltd. and local prisons in England to measure the effectiveness of trace detection methods for the indication of SC in prison post using the Itemiser 3E®. To ensure compounds did not go undetected, samples with Ion Trap Mobility Spectrometry™ peaks indicative of synthetic cannabinoids on the Itemiser 3E® were ana

Art Therapy in Australian Prisons: A Research Agenda.

Art therapy in prisons remains widely under-researched in Australia and beyond and represents a major gap in the literature. Despite evidence that art therapy can be a tool for social change, to date, there are no recorded studies in Australia which have investigated the therapeutic benefits of art in prison populations with measured outcomes. Literary analysis suggests that research tends to be hampered by limitations in methodological approaches that are suited to prison environments. By engaging "inside" with inmates over the course of an 8-week art therapy program, this research design add

Death and denial of care in Indian prisons.

Custodial death is generally linked in the public mind with police brutality and torture, not with indirect brutality through negligence and callous treatment in jail custody. Yet it is not known how many of the thousands of prisoners who die in our jails every year die due to neglect by the jail authorities. The official Prison Statistics India (PSI) in its most recent report states that 1,879 men and women died due to "natural causes" in prisons across India in 2021. Natural causes are defined in the report as "illness" and "ageing". According to the report, 185 more prisoners died of "unnat

Lessons learned from keeping NSW's prisons COVID-free.

PURPOSE: New South Wales (NSW) correctional system houses 30% of prisoners in Australia and at this time has only had a single documented case of COVID-19 amongst its prisoner population. The coordinated response by Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network (The Network) undertaken with the support of NSW Ministry of Health, in partnership with Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW), Youth Justice and private jails has ensured that the NSW correctional system has remained otherwise COVID-free. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A research study of how a range of partners which support the operatio

The Global State of Harm Reduction in Prisons.

Despite the fact that a large portion of the prison population is made up of people who use and inject drugs, harm reduction continues to be extremely limited in prison settings. This article begins with a review of drug-related incarceration, drug use in prisons, and HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) prevalence among prisoners globally. It presents the scientific evidence, alongside legal and economic arguments supporting the provision of harm reduction to people who use drugs, both inside and outside of prisons. The article then provides a global overview of the availability, accessibility, and qual

Prevalence rates of mental disorders in Chilean prisons.

OBJECTIVE: High rates of mental disorders have been reported for prison populations worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The present study aimed to establish prevalence rates of mental disorders in Chilean prisoners. METHOD: A nationwide random sample of 1008 prisoners was assessed in 7 penal institutions throughout Chile. Twelve-month prevalence rates were established using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and compared to the prevalence rates previously published for the general population. RESULTS: Prevalence rates were 12.2% (95% CI,

Tattooing in prisons--not such a pretty picture.

BACKGROUND: Tattooing in prison represents a unique combination of risk factors for blood borne virus (BBV) transmission because it is illicitly performed by untrained operators with homemade, unsterile, and frequently-shared equipment. It occurs in a setting where a high proportion of people are already infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and other BBVs. OBJECTIVES: This study measured the frequency of tattoo acquisition by prisoners inside and outside prison, and the associations between tattooing, injecting drug use, and HCV infection risk. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducte

[Psychosocial characteristics of victims of suicide in prisons].

BACKGROUND: Besides some cases reported by the media in recent years about prison inmates who committed suicide, hardly anything is known concerning social, criminological and psychiatric characteristics of suicide victims in jails and prisons in Austria. It therefore seems necessary to evaluate jail and prison suicides in order to establish effective means of prevention. METHODS: A study was conducted evaluating all suicides in Austrian prisons between 1975 and 1999. In addition to nationality, education and working status, other indicators of social integration and psychiatric history of su
