The Therapist Experiential Model of Treatment (TEMT) captures the commonality of clinical reactions and challenges that therapists encounter when treating patients with acquired brain injury and their support networks in outpatient multidisciplinary treatment settings. A three-tier coping paradigm depicts therapists' fluctuating demeanor, adjustment, and overall outlook. Patient, system, and internal variables facilitate or impede professional efficacy and growth. The TEMT is an effective mentalizing tool, catalyzing self-exploration of countertransference, burnout, and fractionalized working

UNLABELLED: In paediatrics, a diagnosis of Klinefelter syndrome can occur after prenatal testing or because of symptoms such as learning difficulties or incomplete puberty. After the diagnosis, parents have to decide when and how to speak about this condition to their child. Parents and healthcare professionals (HCPs) may have different perceptions related to disclosure of this diagnosis. Due to the absence of clear guidelines, parents and HCPs may feel uncomfortable discussing the condition and may hide the truth in a prolonged fashion.
CONCLUSION: For patients with a prenatal diagnosis, we

AIM: Communication is essential, yet rarely taught in paediatrics. The literature describes skills to improve parent communication in neonatal intensive care units.
METHODS: A PubMed search from 1 January 2023 to 5 May 2025 retrieved articles on communication in neonatology. Communication related to poor prognosis, end-of-life, antenatal issues, ethics and family integrated care was excluded. Data underwent deductive and inductive thematic analysis.
RESULTS: The review included 37 articles, with three themes: basic skills of good communication, means of strengthening communication and learni

OBJECTIVE: Many incurable neurologic diseases have predictable complications during their course or at their end stage. Timely discussions of potential treatment restrictions may improve the quality of treatment decisions toward the end of life. What is known about the actual practice of these discussions?
METHODS: We performed a literature search in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL for empirical studies about discussions and decisions to restrict treatment in the course of 6 conditions: motor neuron disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS]), primary malignant brain tumors, multiple sclerosis,

Nurses working in intensive care units may be vulnerable to verbal or physical aggression from relatives. This article explores the principles and skills associated with de-escalating aggression in such scenarios. These nurses may also be exposed to manipulative patterns of behaviour on the part of relatives and the article explores a research technique with which to manage this kind of situation.

BACKGROUND: Meeting the needs of deaf children and their families is multidisciplinary. Models of multi-agency working are diverse, and there is little evidence on outcome for family and child. Effective collaboration is an essential part of multi-agency working, and how this is achieved is an area that warrants research.
METHODS: An approach was developed to identify family needs using a need identification tool called a Family Needs Survey (FNS) in conjunction with a multi-agency meeting. The FNS was introduced in a pilot study to involve parents of deaf children with services and to identi

ICU performance can be evaluated by using the standard mortality ratio (SMR), but the points of view of the patients, families, and medical and non medical staff must also be taken in account. The SMR is the ratio between the observed (O) and predicted hospital mortality rates (P), based on a statistical model. If for 100 consecutive unselected patients the O/P ratio is less than 1, then the performance is considered good, and otherwise as bad. Most studies show good post-ICU quality of life. Management of dying patients in the ICU is an important issue. Families are stressed, both during and

INTRODUCTION: Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder. However, little information is available concerning the way each patient learns about the existence of Huntington's disease in his family and the way he transmits the information to his descendants. This study aims to specify the role of families and healthcare professionals in delivering information about the disease and its hereditary risk.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from 105 consecutive patients were analyzed. The patients were categorized in four classes according to the way they received informat

To provide optimum patient care, physicians often need to actively work with persons who experience an acute loss or terminal illness. Physicians who are aware of and open to the issues involved in the grief process are likely to maintain healthier lives and be more available to their patients and their patients' loved ones at times of loss. However, physicians must also have a way to process the losses they themselves face. Thus, self-care is an important aspect of grieving for both physician and patients. Although the experience of loss is often painful and emotionally charged, it can provid

In the care of this 29-year-old male patient, a victim of traumatic brain injury with brain death outcome, the multidisciplinary team played a fundamental role in an integrated, ethical, transparent and humanized way. Particularly important was the work of the nursing team, which provided humane and empathetic care and established a bond of trust with family members; the medical team, which managed the case with respect and clarity, guaranteeing the family's right to witness the diagnostic process and understand it at all stages; and psychology, which provided shelter and support for grieving.

Faced with overwhelming demands on their time, physical reserves, and emotional energy, contemporary families are depending more and more on formal networks to help them with their elder care responsibilities. In the past, these interactions worked in a somewhat complimentary fashion with each caregiver having identifiable roles and responsibilities. Now, reforms in health and human services are pushing and pulling families into complex caregiving partnerships. These situations have the very real potential for creating stress, strain, tension and conflict among caregivers, as well as opportuni

The purpose of this study was to explain the adaptation process of a family member of a cancer patient. The theoretical frameworks were the stress- and adaptation theories. The study was implemented by interviewing one family member of each of the 15 cancer patients in question. The interviews were recorded and the material was analyzed. For all of them the family member's taking ill was a shock. Ten of the test persons reacted physiologically. All of them used problem focused coping methods and almost all of them emotion focused coping methods as well. Every test person had received social su

INTRODUCTION: With a national consent rate of 53%, Australian families decline donation in much higher numbers than other high-income countries. Yet, few studies have focused specifically on families who declined donation.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the experiences of families who declined donation after the death of a relative.
METHODS: A qualitative study using in-depth interviews was conducted to elicit detailed narrative accounts. Interviews were conducted between April 2022 and May 2025 in South Australia, Victoria, Queensland, and New South Wales. Thirty-three rece

The following contribution considers whether family dynamics can offer a profitable approach in a psychiatric ward for acute schizophrenics. Basing these considerations on a family-oriented origin of the schizophrenic disturbance, the relationships between family, patient, and clinic are outlined within the framework of a psychiatric crisis situation. Subsequently, practically relevant problems are discussed: Which therapeutic attitude should be adopted towards family members of our patients? Which specific tasks arise in the early stages of in-patient treatment? In conclusion, the author show
