Glucan–resveratrol–vitamin C combination offers protection against toxic agents.

Biological immunomodulators are routinely evaluated as a natural source of molecules with profound effects on the immune system. They belong to a group of physiologically active compounds, collectively termed biological response modifiers. Most of the studies were focused on immune system stimulation. Recently, they have become the focus of studies seeking molecules that are able to overcome negative effects of various immunotoxins. This paper concentrates on the effects of a glucan/resveratrol/vitamin C combination on immunosuppressive effects of mercury and perfluorinated hydrocarbons. Effec

[The five pillars of family and individual protection against mosquitoes, vectors of pathogenic agents].

Except for yellow fever and encephalitis B, effective vaccines remain unavailable against most infectious diseases, and prevention is based mainly upon vector control and chemoprophylaxis. The increasing resistance of, respectively, mosquitoes and parasites to insecticides and drugs is thus a matter of great concern. The best approach is to combine chemoprophylaxis and entomoprophylaxis, that is, to use several methods of vector control at different levels to reduce the risk of infection and illness from these infectious diseases.

Rosmarinic acid, a photo-protective agent against UV and other ionizing radiations.

Solar UV and other ionizing radiations cause a generation of reactive oxygen species, induce cellular DNA damage and alter skin homeostasis. The use of exogenous antioxidants is increasingly frequents, we attempt to demonstrate that a rosmarinic acid extract acts as photo-protector; both free radical scavenger as an inducer of the body's own endogenous defence mechanisms by regulating tyrosinase activity and stimulating melanin production. Malonyldialdehyde formation (TBARS) was delayed when RA was used. The protection factor was 3.24 times vs AA. TEAC value for RA was 1.6 times vs AA. The rad

Green tea polyphenols as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent for cardiovascular protection.

Our review aims to examine the cellular and molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular protection of green tea polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which focuses on the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. EGCG is the major and the most active component in green tea. Studies have shown that EGCG protects cellular damage by inhibiting DNA damage and oxidation of LDL. One of the protective properties of EGCG is its ability to scavenge free radicals. EGCG can also reduce the inflammatory response associated with local tissue injuries such as the hepatocellular necrosis

Melatonin as protective agent for the cytotoxic effects of diazinon in the spermatogenesis in the earthworm Eisenia foetida.

Diazinon (D) is an organophosphorate synthetic insecticide widely used in the world. It inhibits acetylcholinesterase activity and damages reproduction as well as other organic functions mostly by increasing lipid peroxidation. Melatonin (M) is an indolamine secreted by the pineal gland. It performs numerous functions but recently it has been proposed as a good scavenger of oxygen radicals. The earthworm E. foetida is reputed as an excellent bioindicator of environmental chemical pollution. The testicular toxic effect of D and the protective role of M was analyzed in adult E. foetida, at 1, 7,

Axonal protection in experimental autoimmune neuritis by the sodium channel blocking agent flecainide.

Inflammatory demyelinating neuropathies such as Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) and its animal model, experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN), are typically acute monophasic diseases of the PNS that can leave affected individuals with permanent disability due primarily to axonal degeneration. The mechanisms underlying the degeneration are not understood, but we have previously shown in vitro and in vivo that axons can degenerate when exposed to the inflammatory mediator nitric oxide, and that axons can be protected by application of the sodium channel-blocking agent, flecainide. Here we examine w

Melatonin: a novel protective agent against oxidative injury of the ischemic/reperfused heart.

This brief review summarizes the recently obtained evidence which illustrates the beneficial effects of the endogenously produced antioxidant, melatonin, in reducing tissue damage and reversing cardiac pathophysiology in models of experimental ischemia/reperfusion. The report also describes the actions of other antioxidants, especially vitamin E and antioxidative enzymes, in altering the degree of ischemia/reperfusion damage in the heart. Based on the data available, melatonin seems to have advantages over other antioxidants tested in terms of ameliorating the hypoxia and reoxygenation-induced

Negatively charged polymers protect antinuclear antibody against inactivation by acylating agents.

For many practical applications, monoclonal antibodies must be chemically modified without any significant loss in their immunoreactivity. In some situations, however, the amino acid residue crucial for antibody activity may be highly reactive toward the modifying agent, which results in antibody inactivation. The method to prevent inactivation of a modification-sensitive antinuclear monoclonal antibody by acylating agents was developed. The method is based on the hypothesis that a highly reactive amino group exists within, or in the vicinity of, the binding site of the antibody, providing cru

Comparative Performance Evaluation of Personal Protective Measures and Antiviral Agents Against SARS-CoV-2 Variants: A Narrative Review.

Scientists identified SARS-CoV-2 in December 2019 in Wuhan city of China. Soon after its identification, Covid-19 spreads almost everywhere. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Covid-19 outbreak as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Countries are facing multiple waves due to the different variants of the coronavirus. Personal preventive measures, vaccines, and antiviral drugs are the approaches to control Covid-19. However, these approaches are being implemented in different countries at different levels because of the availability of personal protective measures and antiviral agents.

[Protective effect of lithium carbonate in neutropenia induced by antiblastic agents and evaluation of its long-term efficacy].

The association of lithium carbonate and antiblastic drugs has been studied in 22 patients suffering from tumours to see whether it was able to prevent or attenuate the neutropenising effect and establish whether its protection action on leucocytaemia was not just transitory but was maintained for prolonged treatment also. Patients were submitted to four oncolytic treatment cycles during which administration with LiCO3 was associated with the first and third cycles (LNLN sequence) in 14 patients and with the second and fourth (NLNL sequence) in the other 8. Statistical analysis of the results

The Protective Potential of Phyllanthus niruri and Corilagin on Gastric Lesions Induced in Rodents by Different Harmful Agents.

The gastroprotective effect of the methanol extract of Phyllantus niruri and its main constituent, corilagin, were studied in vivo. The extract (50, 125, or 250 mg/kg, p. o.) inhibited ethanol-induced lesions in rats by 43 % (p < 0.001), 69 % (p < 0.001), and 99 % (p < 0.001), respectively. It also inhibited the formation of indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers in rats by 80 % (p < 0.01), 89 % (p < 0.01), and 97 % (p < 0.01). A decrease in lipid hydroperoxide levels (p < 0.01) and in myeloperoxidase activity (p < 0.05) evidenced a reduction of oxidative damage and neutrophil infiltration in gas

Susceptibility of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase to oxidative damage and the protective effect of spin trapping agents.

Susceptibility of two key protective enzymes, glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and glutathione reductase (GR), to oxidative damage and the possible protective action of spin traps have been studied. Several oxidizing protocols including: (a) Fe(II) or Fe(III)/ascorbate, (b) a singlet oxygen producing system (methylene blue and visible light), (c) ozone, and (d) a hydroxyl radical-generating system (hydrogen peroxide/uv light) have been employed. Our results show that both enzymes are susceptible to oxidative modification and damage as indicated by the loss of activity and formation of carbonyl gro

Adenoviral Expression of a Bispecific VHH-Based Neutralizing Agent That Targets Protective Antigen Provides Prophylactic Protection from Anthrax in Mice.

Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, secretes three polypeptides, which form the bipartite lethal and edema toxins (LT and ET, respectively). The common component in these toxins, protective antigen (PA), is responsible for binding to cellular receptors and translocating the lethal factor (LF) and edema factor (EF) enzymatic moieties to the cytosol. Antibodies against PA protect against anthrax. We previously isolated toxin-neutralizing variable domains of camelid heavy-chain-only antibodies (VHHs) and demonstrated their in vivo efficacy. In this work, gene therapy with an adeno

Beyond glycemic control: SGLT2 inhibitors as time-sensitive organ-protective agents in acute injury-mechanistic insights and translational implications.

BACKGROUND: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) were initially developed as glucose-lowering therapies for type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, large cardiovascular and renal outcome trials have demonstrated rapid reductions in heart failure events and slowing of kidney disease progression, including in patients without diabetes, suggesting benefits beyond glycemic control. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the mechanistic, preclinical, and clinical evidence supporting SGLT2is as acute organ-protective agents and to evaluate their translational potential in time-sensitive clinical setting…
