Development and Evaluation of the Brief Sexual Openness Scale-A Construal Level Theory Based Approach.

Obtaining reliable and valid data on sensitive questions represents a longstanding challenge for public health, particularly HIV research. To overcome the challenge, we assessed a construal level theory (CLT)-based novel method. The method was previously established and pilot-tested using the Brief Sexual Openness Scale (BSOS). This scale consists of five items assessing attitudes toward premarital sex, multiple sexual partners, homosexuality, extramarital sex, and commercial sex, all rated on a standard 5-point Likert scale. In addition to self-assessment, the participants were asked to asses

Integrating etiological models of social anxiety and depression in youth: evidence for a cumulative interpersonal risk model.

Models of social anxiety and depression in youth have been developed separately, and they contain similar etiological influences. Given the high comorbidity of social anxiety and depression, we examine whether the posited etiological constructs are a correlate of, or a risk factor for, social anxiety and/or depression at the symptom level and the diagnostic level. We find core risk factors of temperament, genetics, and parent psychopathology (i.e., depression and anxiety) are neither necessary nor sufficient for the development of social anxiety and/or depression. Instead, aspects of children'

Is Worry Associated With Social Exclusion in School? Within-Person Relations From Age 10 to 16.

INTRODUCTION: The need-to-belong theory stipulates that social exclusion should influence cognitive processing. However, no longitudinal studies have examined its effects on cognitive processing (e.g., worry) associated with internalizing problems. In this study, we investigated whether social exclusion in school predicts worry from childhood to adolescence, and whether these associations differ by gender. METHODS: The sample consisted of 655 Norwegian 10-year-olds who were assessed biennially from age 10 to 16 between 2013/2014 and 2020/2021. Assessments included teacher-reported data on soc

Auto-photovoice: A reflexive extension of photovoice methodology and its practice in a COVID-quarantined community psychology course.

This article introduces "auto-photovoice," a novel self-reflexive extension of photovoice methodology where participant-researchers turn the camera on themselves to explore their personal experiences and observations of a phenomenon. In our exemplar project, students and faculty codesigned and implemented auto-photovoice methodology during a 10-week online community psychology graduate seminar during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine. Our photos addressed the prompt, "What inequities do we experience and witness in well-being related to COVID-19?" The initial analysis of weekly discussions of t

Are underprivileged and less empowered women deprived of respectful maternity care: Inequities in childbirth experiences in public health facilities in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Attainment of healthcare in respectful and dignified manner is a fundamental right for every woman regardless of the individual status. However, social exclusion, poor psychosocial support, and demeaning care during childbirth at health facilities are common worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. We concurrently examined how women with varying socio-demographic characteristics are treated during childbirth, the effect of women's empowerment on mistreatment, and health services factors that contribute to mistreatment in secondary-level public health facilities

Homophily in the career mobility of China's political elite.

We argue that leadership promotion in China's political elite relies on homophily for signals of trustworthiness and future cooperative behavior more than on economic performance. We first point to the limitation of the economic performance argument from within the framework of China's specific M-form state structure, and then we proffer a sociological explanation for why higher-level elites in China rely on homophilous associations in recruiting middle-level elites to the top positions of state. Using a unique dataset covering China's provincial leaders from 1979 to 2011, we develop a homophi

Promoting Educational Resiliency in Youth with Incarcerated Parents: The Impact of Parental Incarceration, School Characteristics, and Connectedness on School Outcomes.

The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, and as a result, one of the largest populations of incarcerated parents. Growing evidence suggests that the incarceration of a parent may be associated with a number of risk factors in adolescence, including school drop out. Taking a developmental ecological approach, this study used multilevel modeling to examine the association of parental incarceration on truancy, academic achievement, and lifetime educational attainment using the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health (48.3 % female; 46 % minority status). Attachment Modulates Neural Responses to Social Exclusion vs. Inclusion: An fMRI Cyberball Study in Children.

Individual differences in attachment classification reflect children's social expectations given early relational experiences with primary caregivers. When experiencing rejection - when affective needs are unmet - children can develop avoidant attachment strategies, including suppression of negative emotions and inhibition of observable reactions to adversity. A key aversive situation is social rejection, but how attachment differences affect neural responses to it is poorly understood. We combined functional MRI and the Cyberball paradigm to investigate responses to social rejection in 38 chi

[Social pain at the core of suicidal behavior].

BACKGROUND: Intolerable pain is often reported in suicide notes. Moreover, the frequency of life events preceding a suicidal act is high, especially interpersonal difficulties. Such adversity is the source of psychological or social pain. METHODS: We propose a narrative review to discuss the role of pain in the suicidal process while having a focus on social ties. RESULTS: Using Ecological Momentary Assessment in suicide attempters it has been shown that being alone increased suicidal ideation while being with close others significantly reduced this risk. At a neuroanatomical level, suicidal

The subtle suspension of backlash: A meta-analysis of penalties for women's implicit and explicit dominance behavior.

Previous research suggests that women, more than men, experience negative outcomes when they display dominance. A closer look, however, reveals ambiguity about the specific forms of dominance proscribed for women. Here, we suggest that negative reactions to women's dominance, a counter-stereotypical behavior, may require that the behavior be clearly encoded as counter-stereotypical-which is less likely when the behavior is expressed implicitly. This hypothesis was tested with a meta-analysis of studies on the evaluation of individuals behaving dominantly, including articles not directly invest

Experienced Turkish nurses' attitudes towards mental illness and the predictor variables of their attitudes.

General attitudes towards mental illness, attitudes towards two vignettes, and possible predictor variables of these attitudes were investigated among experienced Turkish nurses. The analyses showed that the nurses accepted both organic and psychological causation and had rather positive views on drug treatment, psychotherapy, and prognosis. However, they were more favourably disposed towards psychological causation and psychotherapy; the paranoid schizophrenia description was more readily perceived as mental illness and more 'negative' ratings were recorded for this than was the case in the d

No effect of online cyberball social exclusion on interval estimation of action-outcome events.

Recent work suggests that feelings of social exclusion can attenuate feelings of agency, as indexed by temporal binding. However, existing evidence relies on heterogeneous manipulations of social exclusion and different operationalizations of temporal binding, raising questions about the generality of these effects. Across two pre-registered experiments, we examined whether the first-hand experience of social exclusion influences temporal binding as measured by the interval estimation task. Social exclusion and inclusion were manipulated using a within-subjects Cyberball paradigm administered

Rationale and Development of a Remote Counseling Program for Hyperacusis.

PURPOSE: This clinical focus article describes the development of a novel, remotely delivered counseling program for patients with hyperacusis. For many patients, seeking management of hyperacusis is limited by accessibility and affordability issues of care. By reducing these barriers, remote counseling has the potential to advance hyperacusis care and improve outcomes for many people suffering from hyperacusis. METHOD: We created a 4-week remote counseling program that included asynchronous videos, hands-on activities and quizzes, handouts and resources for teaching coping skills and keeping

The function of regulator's empathy and social distance in adolescent interpersonal emotion regulation effectiveness: A dyadic approach.

Previous studies have indicated that adolescents are susceptible to emotional cues and can benefit from peers' interpersonal emotion regulation (IER). However, it remains unclear how an adolescent regulator's personal traits shape an effective IER. The present study examined the role of regulator's trait empathy and social distance between the regulator and the target on IER effectiveness among adolescents and explored the underlying behavioral mechanism. A total of 420 adolescent dyads with ages ranging from 12 to 18 years participated (212 dyads of friends; 208 dyads of strangers). After rep

Elevated testosterone and prosocial behavior in female patients with borderline personality disorder independent of social exclusion.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is marked by unstable relationships and fear of abandonment. Earlier studies suggest that patients with BPD are highly sensitive to social exclusion and show deficits in trust and cooperation. The hormone testosterone influences such prosocial behavior and regulates aggressive and caring behavior. Previous studies show elevated testosterone levels in female patients with BPD at baseline and after psychosocial stress, while results after social exclusion are missing. METHOD: We investigated the effects of social exclusion on prosocial behavior (

Homelessness in Virtual Reality: Experiencing Social Exclusion Improves Attitudes and Behaviors Toward Unhoused People.

Virtual reality (VR) interventions are receiving increasing attention from research seeking to promote harmonious intergroup relations. Despite this, the effectiveness of VR methods and the underlying mechanisms for enhancing intergroup relations yield mixed findings. The current research examined if a 360° immersive video where participants embodied an unhoused person could improve attitudes and behavioral intentions toward unhoused people by making participants experience social exclusion and its psychological repercussions. The study (N = 210) adopted a 2 × 2 between-subject design where pa

An examination of the relationship between hoarding symptoms and hostility.

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a persistent and severe psychiatric condition in which individuals are unable to discard possessions, which results in considerable clutter. Individuals who hoard often endorse interpersonal difficulties and social isolation. However, little research has examined mechanisms that may help to explain this relationship. One possible mechanism is hostility, which is characterized by increased sensitivity to real or perceived social threats. The current study examined the relationship between hoarding symptoms and hostility across two undergraduate samples. In study 1, uns

Public stigma of obsessive compulsive disorder and schizophrenic disorder: Is there really any difference?

A substantial delay for help-seeking is a serious problem for people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a heterogeneous and debilitating mental health condition. Stigma is a major barrier to treatment seeking and further cause social and occupational impairment. Lack of comprehensive research led us to examine the public's stigmatizing attitudes towards checking, contamination, sexuality, aggression, and religion-related OCD symptoms, compared to schizophrenia. After reading one of six random case vignettes, 621 adults completed social distance scale. Analysis of Covariance or ANCOVA in

Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder show larger preferred social distance in live dyadic interactions.

Personal space regulation is a key component of effective social engagement. Personal space varies among individuals and with some mental health conditions. Simulated personal space intrusions in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) reveal larger preferred interpersonal distance in that setting. These findings led us to conduct the first test of live interpersonal distance preferences in symptoms in BPD. With direct observation of subjects' personal space behavior in the stop-distance paradigm, we found a 2-fold larger preferred interpersonal distance in BPD than control (n = 30, n = 23). We
