[The Berlin Documentation System for Psychotherapy].

A Berlin Team for Documentation in Psychotherapy has developed an extensive documentation system. It provides data of a social, psychological and life-history nature, refering to computerized dataanalysis, which are pertinent in the psychological assessment of patients with neurotic and psychosomatic symptoms. The instrument which serves in collecting the data--a special type of psychoanalytic interview--has been used routinely in the Berlin-Group since 1951 to diagnose neurotic disturbances and to prognostically assess the chances for treatment. Interest in assessment-procedures which especia…

Childhood depression: a place for psychotherapy. An outcome study comparing individual psychodynamic psychotherapy and family therapy.

BACKGROUND: Although considered clinically effective, there is little systematic research confirming the use of Individual Psychodynamic Psychotherapy or Family Therapy as treatments for depression in children and young adolescents. AIMS: A clinical trial assessed the effectiveness of these two forms of psychotherapy in treating moderate and severe depression in this age group. METHODS: A randomised control trial was conducted with 72 patients aged 9-15 years allocated to one of two treatment groups. RESULTS: Significant reductions in disorder rates were seen for both Individual Therapy and…

Psychotherapy and bulimia nervosa. Longer-term effects of interpersonal psychotherapy, behavior therapy, and cognitive behavior therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for bulimia nervosa has a specific therapeutic effect and determine whether a simplified behavioral treatment (BT) of CBT is as effective as the full treatment. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial involving three psychological treatments. Two planned comparisons, CBT with interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), and CBT with BT. Closed 12-month follow-up period. Independent assessors. SETTING: Secondary referral center. PATIENTS: Seventy-five consecutively referred patients with bulimia nervosa. Patients with concurrent anorexia ner…

AI in Psychotherapy: Opportunities and Risks.

This article examines the emerging role of artificial intelligence in mental health contexts, with a particular focus on psychotherapy and the risks associated with deploying large language models (LLMs) in sensitive clinical domains. It aims to provide a broad review of current literature, highlighting key risks of general-purpose artificial intelligence (AI) systems, while also exploring the potential of clinically oriented LLMs for therapist training, supervision, and professional development. It discusses several key concerns, including AI-related psychosis, the development of parasocial a…

Effectiveness of Antidepressants in Combination with Psychotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Consensus-guidelines for prescribing antidepressants recommend that clinicians should be vigilant to match antidepressants to patient's medical history but provide no specific advice on which antidepressant is best for a given medical history. AIMS OF THE STUDY: For patients with major depression who are in psychotherapy, this study provides an empirically derived guideline for prescribing antidepressant medications that fit patients' medical history. METHODS: This retrospective, observational, cohort study analyzed a large insurance database of 3,678,082 patients. Data was obtai…

Socioeconomic status and access to psychotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with low socioeconomic status (SES) have significantly higher prevalence rates of mental disorders than those with higher SES, but are less likely to receive treatment. Studies from the United States show that individuals with higher SES are more likely to be offered a therapy place than those with low SES. In Germany, where the public health care system is without financial barriers, studies on access to treatment are lacking. METHOD: The present study investigated whether the SES of persons seeking psychotherapeutic help in Germany influences psychotherapists' decisio

[Virtual Reality in psychiatry and psychotherapy].

The use of virtual reality (VR) technology in psychiatry and psychotherapy has spread continiously over the last two decades. Researches has mainly focused on the VR-based therapy of anxiety disorders, but encouraging results have also been published in the field of diagnosis and therapy of eating disorders, addictions, autism, and ADHD. There have been fewer reports on the therapy of schizophrenia yet. In these cases VR interventions cover a wide range of symptoms. VR based interventions have already been developed for cognitive and social abilities that are more difficult to alleviate by med…

Intersession improvement and outcome in psychotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: Psychotherapy patients who experience large, stable symptomatic improvement between sessions are more likely than those without such sudden gains to benefit from treatment. However, there is limited empirical basis for the definition of sudden gains, and it is unclear how they may affect symptomatic change at other points in treatment. METHOD: In a psychotherapy training clinic, 149 adults completed a distress measure at each session. For each criterion in the definition of sudden gains, we evaluated the prediction of outcome, possible moderating variables, local score instability,…

Psychotherapy and despair in the prison setting.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to outline research which aimed to explore psychotherapists' experience of working with despair, in the UK prison setting, through a qualitative phenomenological approach. Within the forensic psychological literature, despair is considered a pathology, associated with suicide and self-harm, resulting from the prisoners histories and the coercive prison setting. In turn, therapeutic writings outline the importance of therapy in the prison setting with despair in providing coping skills, containment and learning opportunities for the prisoners involved. DES

Forgiveness in psychotherapy: the key to healing.

The process of forgiveness in psychotherapy involves both letting go of resentment toward the offender and replacing the resentment with mindful awareness and empathy. By reconceptualizing past transgressions with a kinder, more equivocal outlook, clients attain a shift in perspective that is spiritual and cognitive in nature, thereby reducing symptomology and enhancing their quality of life. Such insights bring clients toward their inner Buddha nature, which transcends the suffering associated with clinging to past hurts and resentment. This process is facilitated by techniques such as concen…
