BACKGROUND: The longitudinal course of multiple symptom domains in adolescents treated for major depression is not known. Revealing the temporal course of general and specific psychopathology factors, including potential differences between psychotherapies, may aid therapeutic decision-making.
METHODS: Participants were adolescents with major depressive disorder (aged 11-17; 75% female; N = 465) who were part of the IMPACT trial, a randomized controlled trial comparing cognitive behavioral therapy, short-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and brief psychosocial intervention. Self-reported sym

A clinical trial was used to evaluate short-term interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) as treatment for psychiatric disorders in opiate addicts who were also participating in a full-service methadone hydrochloride maintenance program. Seventy-two opiate addicts were randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions for six months: (1) IPT, consisting of weekly individual psychotherapy, and (2) low-contact treatment, consisting of one brief meeting per month. Recruitment was a problem, as only 5% of eligible clients agreed to participate and only around half of the subjects completed the study t

Ketamine, an N-methyl-d-aspartate antagonist, shows promise for treatment-resistant depression (TRD), with psychedelic doses potentially enhancing efficacy. However, its transient antidepressant effects and the need for repeated infusions raise concerns about optimal duration and long-term safety. Two clinical trials have tested the combination of ketamine with psychotherapy for depression, with mixed results. While real-world data on ketamine infusion protocols exist, reports on clinical outcomes, long-term follow-up, and the role of subjective experiences when ketamine is combined with psych

This article presents a frequent dilemma of treatment-seeking mothers suffering from complex posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that is related to exposure to maltreatment and other forms of interpersonal violence. Namely, that complex PTSD symptoms, including dissociative states in mothers that are triggered by normative child emotion dysregulation, aggression, and distress during early childhood, hinder the development of a productive psychotherapeutic process in more traditional psychodynamic psychotherapies for mothers and children. The article thus presents clinician-assisted videofeedb

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether a brief psychotherapy for post-trauma nightmares (exposure, relaxation, and rescripting therapy [ERRT]), reduced suicidal ideation (SI). We hypothesized that: (a) nightmare frequency and severity, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and sleep quality would be related to SI at pretreatment; (b) SI would decrease from pre- to post-treatment; and (c) the decrease in SI would remain after controlling for change in PTSD and depression.
METHOD: Seventy-five individuals exposed to a traumatic event and who experienced frequent nightmares (min

BACKGROUND: The Measure of Common Characteristics that Complicate Care (C4) is a clinician-administered checklist designed to quantify characteristics that could complicate care in outpatient psychiatry. This study investigated the C4 checklist against disturbance of personality function and early adherence to psychotherapy.
METHODS: The recruits for the trial were patients awaiting group psychotherapy in psychotherapy outpatient clinics, who were scored with the C4 and responded to the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form (LPFS-BF) questionnaire. We compared differences in case

OBJECTIVE: Intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP) has been shown to be effective with patients with common mental disorders, including personality disorders. In the Netherlands, a 6-month residential version (R-ISTDP) of this traditionally outpatient therapy for patients with treatment-resistant personality disorders was developed and tested. This study focused on changes that occurred directly after treatment and 1-10 years after discharge.
METHODS: All patients admitted to the R-ISTDP program between 1995 and 2005 were assessed at admission, discharge, and a variable follow-up o

This study examined changes in emotion regulation difficulties during short-term dynamic psychotherapy and their temporal relationship with symptom change, considering attachment styles as potential moderators. Sixty-three patients with mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety underwent 16 weeks of supportive-expressive therapy. Emotion regulation difficulties, symptoms, and attachment styles were assessed using self-report measures. Contrary to hypotheses, no overall improvement in emotion regulation difficulties was observed. However, patients with high attachment avoidance showed increase

Functional voice disorders require adequate psychiatric screening and treatment due to the complex etiologies of the psychic elements involved. While the diagnosis of dysphonia increasingly takes into account various emotional factors, considerations of indications for psychotherapy and for differing forms of psychotherapy are missing in the literature. To fill this gap, the aims and principles of a number of psychoanalytically based therapeutic methods are presented. Criteria for general indications for treatment and with respect to patients with functional voice disorders are outlined. Case

Problems with nightmares are reported by a sizable proportion of individuals with a history of trauma and by approximately 5% to 8% of the general population. Chronic nightmares may represent a primary sleep disorder rather than a symptom of a psychiatric disorder, and direct targeting of nightmares is a feasible clinical approach to the problem. Of the treatments proposed, imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) has received the most empirical support. An up-to-date account of this cognitive-imagery approach shows how to treat nightmares during 4 roughly 2-hr sessions. The main points covered in each

BACKGROUND: In China, psychodynamic psychotherapies are widely used as a treatment for depression. However, very few efficacy studies of psychodynamic therapies have been conducted with the Chinese population. This paper describes a study protocol of a multicenter randomized controlled trial of dynamic interpersonal psychotherapy (DIT), a brief manualized depression-focused intervention, in Chinese adults with major depressive disorder (MDD).
METHODS: Recruitment is planned in five hospitals. Two hundred forty patients with MDD will be randomly allocated on a 1:1:1 basis to either medication

Social workers operating under emergency conditions may feel overwhelmed and incapacitated by their own stress reactions. During the Gulf War, social work faculty in Israel acted as consultants to help hospital social workers manage stress and regain professional efficacy. The Stress Management Consultation (SMC) was a short-term group intervention designed to enable social workers to work through their stress reactions and to model a method the workers could use with their own target populations. Qualitative feedback from both participants and administrators indicated that the SMC model was e

OBJECTIVE:: This article aims to articulate the use of trauma-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (TFPP) for a 33-year-old U.S. Army veteran with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a Veterans Affairs (VA) setting.
METHODS:: The patient was treated with TFPP, a manualized brief psychotherapy provided as part of a pilot study. TFPP differs from traditional dynamic psychotherapies in its focus on symptoms of trauma and associated dynamics. The patient was seen for an initial 60-minute intake session and then for 16 50-minute sessions over 5.5 months at a VA medical center.
RESULTS:: Follow

BACKGROUND: According to the network theory of mental disorders, psychopathology emerges from symptoms that causally influence one another and create interconnections and feedback loops that maintain atypical mental states. Analysis of symptom networks during and following psychotherapy may provide clues to some of the mechanisms through which change occurs. Youth with depression are an important population in which to better understand psychotherapy mechanisms because current evidence-based interventions for this population show only modest effects.
METHODS: Participants were adolescents wit

IMPORTANCE: Prenatal depression is prevalent with negative consequences for both the mother and developing fetus. Brief, effective, and safe interventions to reduce depression during pregnancy are needed.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate depression improvement (symptoms and diagnosis) among pregnant individuals from diverse backgrounds randomized to brief interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) vs enhanced usual care (EUC).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A prospective, evaluator-blinded, randomized clinical trial, the Care Project, was conducted among adult pregnant individuals who reported elevated sym
