The Impact of Meaning-Centred Group Psychotherapy Conducted by a Palliative Care Team on Patients with Advanced Urological System Tumours: A Single-Centre Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the effect of meaning-centred group psychotherapy (MCGP) on patients with advanced urologic cancer. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the medical records of patients with advanced urological system tumours who visited our hospital from January 2022 to January 2024. Patients were divided into a conventional group and an MCGP group on the basis of the type of nursing care they received. Both groups underwent nursing care for one month, and the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ), Herth Hope Index (HHI), Self-Perceived Burde

The efficacy of modified psychodynamic psychotherapy for patients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders in Germany: a prospective, single-centre, assessor-blinded, parallel-group, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders have difficulties in interpersonal functioning that remain insufficiently addressed by standard care. Despite long-standing clinical use, psychodynamic psychotherapy has little empirical support compared with other psychosocial treatments for people with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. We evaluated the efficacy of Modified Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Schizophrenia (MPP-S), a manualised treatment tailored to the interpersonal vulnerability characteristic of this population, plus treatment as usual (TAU), compared with TAU alone. AIDElong-acute illness and depression in elderly: sustained improvement after group psychotherapy in geriatric patients, a follow-up of longterm effects in a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Comorbid depression is highly prevalent in very old adults hospitalized for acute medical illness. We have previously shown that immediate intervention with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) effectively reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety. The present study examines the long-term course and the effect of delayed intervention. DESIGN: Randomized, controlled cross-over trial of group CBT. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We recruited in-patients of a geriatric university department ≥ 65 years with depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale HADS ≥ 7). Intervention took place

Cognitive behavioral based group psychotherapy focusing on repetitive negative thinking: Decreased uncontrollability of rumination is related to brain perfusion increases in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a core process underlying various psychiatric disorders. 'Uncontrollability of rumination (UOR)' is one the most maladaptive factors of rumination, but little is known on how cognitive behavioral focused RNT psychotherapy may alter brain activity. In a subsample of 47 patients suffering from RNT who also underwent brain imaging (registered RCT trial NCT01983033), we evaluated the effect of cognitive behavioral based group psychotherapy (CBGP) (n = 25) as compared to a delayed treatment control group (DTCG) (n = 22) on frontolimbic brain perfusion with a fo

Shame, guilt, and posttraumatic stress disorder in adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse at risk for human immunodeficiency virus: outcomes of a randomized clinical trial of group psychotherapy treatment.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of group psychotherapy in reducing levels of shame and guilt in adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse at risk for HIV, and whether such reductions would mediate the effects of treatment on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. One hundred sixty-six women were randomized into 3 conditions: a trauma-focused group, a present-focused group, and a waitlist group. Women received 6 months of treatment and were assessed at pretreatment (T1), immediately posttreatment (T2), and 6 months posttreatment (T3). Both treatment conditions resulted in reduced

The Role of Group Supportive Psychotherapy on Quality of Life and Its Relationship with Heart Rate Variability and Blood Serotonin Levels in End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Patients Undergoing Chronic Hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing chronic hemodialysis often experience reduced quality of life and autonomic dysregulation. Group supportive psychotherapy may improve psychological well-being through biopsychosocial mechanisms. This study evaluated the effects of group supportive psychotherapy on quality of life and its association with heart rate variability (HRV) and blood serotonin levels. METHODS: This randomized, parallel-group, single-blind controlled trial was conducted at the Hemodialysis Unit of Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital, Jaka

Psychological distress and quality of life are improved in autoimmune patients through Tandem-Psychotherapy, combining individual hypnosis and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) treatment for trauma, followed by supportive-expressive group therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune diseases are associated with psychological distress, resulting in greatly impaired quality of life. Tandem-Psychotherapy comprises trauma-focused psychotherapy with hypnosis and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), followed by supportive-expressive group therapy. The objective was to evaluate whether Tandem-Psychotherapy could reduce psychological distress and improve quality of life. METHODS: In a case-control study, 45 patients were divided into two groups: 24 patients in the therapy group (TG) and 21 in the control group (CG). The autoimmune diagnoses

Co-Boost: boosting and guiding neuroplasticity by combining ketamine with neurofeedback-assisted learning-towards an individualised and integrated pharmaco-psychotherapy for cocaine addiction: study protocol for a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group, single-centre trial.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine is the most frequently used stimulant worldwide, with increasing consumption rates in Europe. Cocaine use is associated with great harm to individuals and society. As of today, psychotherapeutic interventions for cocaine use disorder (CUD) demonstrate only modest effect sizes, and no pharmacotherapy has been approved due to gaps in understanding the disease. However, a novel pharmacotherapeutic target, i.e. glutamatergic neurotransmission, emerged from animal models of addiction. Specifically, after chronic cocaine administration, glutamate concentrations in the nucleus acc

Leaning Into Termination: New Ideas in Modern Group Analysis.

This paper was originally a panel presentation at AGPA Connect, the annual meeting of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, held in March 2025. The author briefly reviews modern analytic myths about therapeutic terminations that may evoke feelings of failure in group leaders and impede their ability to work collaboratively with themselves and group members. These myths can interfere with making terminations a constructive and progressive experience. Three personal and clinical examples are offered to illustrate how the blending of the leader's personal and professional life deepened em

Group schema therapy for patients with severe anxiety disorders.

This article presents an adaptation of group schema therapy (GST) developed for patients with severe anxiety. An anonymized case presentation exemplifies the adaptation. GST was originally developed to treat clients with maladaptive personality traits but has been applied to a variety of disorders in recent years. For patients with severe anxiety, who have not responded to other treatments, GST may be a promising approach. The paper presents the GST model, the evidence supporting it, and its adaptation for the treatment of anxiety. The case presentation illustrates the therapeutic process and

Avoiding colonizer positions in the therapy room: some ideas about the challenges of dealing with the dialectic of misery and resources in families.

Some authors have argued that certain acts of family therapists-despite their best intentions-may represent a form of colonizing the family. When acting as a colonizer, a therapist is understood as becoming overly responsible for the family and focusing too strongly on change. In so doing, the therapist disrespects the family's pace, and neglects their own resources for change. This paper aims to highlight the need for therapists to be hypersensitive both to the resources of families entering therapy as well as to the impact of prevailing ideologies on their own positioning in the session. The

Structured group treatment of couples experiencing sexual dysfunctions.

This paper describes a structured, time-limited method for treating couples in which both people are experiencing sexual dysfunctions. In our previous research, we found that group treatment was as effective as single-couple treatment for treating men experiencing premature ejaculation and women experiencing secondary orgasmic dysfunction. In this article we have described our procedures for evaluating and selecting group participants, our 12-week structured group treatment format, the group process, common problems and resistances, and our methods for assessing treatment outcome. Our structur

Psychedelic group-based integration: ethical assessment and initial recommendations.

A number of organizations have developed or are developing psychedelic integration groups, held in person or online. In parallel, there have been calls to make enhanced integration available in the community after clinical trials. Here, we explore a potential reason why individuals may seek out these groups: namely, the feelings of disconnection and loneliness that may arise after the psychedelic experience (noting that there may be other reasons that individuals may seek out these groups). Integration groups can offer significant benefits to participants (e.g. a sense of community, shared cop
