Familial male-limited precocious puberty (FMPP) is a gonadotropin-independent disorder that is inherited in an autosomal dominant, male-limited pattern. Affected males generally exhibit signs of puberty by the age of 4 years. Testosterone production and Leydig cell hyperplasia occur autonomously in context of prepubertal levels of luteinizing hormone (LH). The LH receptor is a member of the family of G-protein-coupled receptors. Thus far, eleven constitutively activating mutations of the LH receptor gene, which result in high basal cyclic AMP levels, have been identified in pedigree with FMPP

This paper will deal with the psychologic correlates of abnormal puberty and the implications for assessment and treatment. The main areas of adolescent behavior, equally relevant to the child who undergoes normal or abnormal puberty, are psychosexual development, psychopathology and mental functioning in terms of level of intelligence and cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Regarding psychosexual development, the important findings are that adolescents with precocious puberty tend to be somewhat earlier in starting their adolescent sex life, though they still remain within the normal range of

Occurrence of any pubertal sign before eight years of age defines premature sexual development but does not always mean precocious puberty (PP); one should distinguish borderline physiological situations which need only a follow-up and frankly pathological situations which need very precise investigations and suitable treatment. The first situations are premature thelarche, pubarche and menarche in which the height and bone maturation, pelvic ultrasonography (US) are normal for age, avoiding hormonal investigations. Conversely in the second situation, the bone age is more advanced than the hei

Precocious puberty, as defined by the onset of pubertal development before the age of 8 years in girls or 9 years in boys, can be classified into central and peripheral aetiologies. Central precocious puberty (CPP) results from early activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and has similar physical and hormonal characteristics to normal puberty. Extrapituitary gonadotrophin secretion or independent sex steroid secretion results in peripheral precocious puberty (PPP). Precocious puberty is characterised by rapid growth and advancement of skeletal age. The skeletal advancement is gr
