Armed violence undermines public health not only by destroying infrastructure but also by eroding trust in government institutions, including the health system. Prior research shows that victimized individuals often withdraw from public health services, with particularly adverse consequences for child health. Whether such distrust can be restored, however, remains an open question. We address this question in northeastern Nigeria, a region heavily affected by armed violence, through a randomized field experiment embedded in a representative household survey of caregivers of young children (n =

The global clinical research enterprise remains fundamentally misaligned with worldwide disease burden and public health needs, despite corrective efforts in recent years. Although clinical trials deliver important medical advances that benefit populations globally, research capabilities and trials are concentrated in high-income countries, which means that populations with the heaviest disease burdens (often in low-income and middle-income countries) participate in relatively few trials addressing their needs-infectious and non-communicable diseases alike. This imbalance leaves knowledge gaps

Wastewater surveillance (WS) has emerged as an important population-based surveillance tool for early pathogen detection to inform timely public health action. Despite global guidance to initiate WS programming in Asia, the priorities and needs in Asia remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we conducted a cross-sectional assessment of WS efforts in Asia. An institutional survey recorded 89 separate projects among 45 institutions in 19 countries in Asia. Financing for WS was equally split between domestic and external resources. Most projects were research-oriented, with one-fifth embed

The prevalence of plastics in the environment raises concerns about their complex and poorly understood effects on human health. Research continues to uncover more sources of exposure and wider ranges of plastics within the body. Adverse health effects have been observed in animals, but their relevance to humans remains unclear. To address the growing need for reliable toxicity assessment resources and tools to aid in the synthesis of findings and the identification of data gaps and needs, we have developed a data visualization tool to provide streamlined access to the evaluated data on the ch

Since 2015, the Long-Term Care Quality & Innovation (Q&I) Lab at the Brown University School of Public Health has advanced pragmatic, partner-engaged research to improve care for older adults and chronically ill individuals receiving post-acute and long-term care. Rather than evaluating interventions under controlled conditions, Q&I researchers conduct embedded studies in real-world care settings, working with clinicians and frontline staff to implement interventions and assess their effectiveness and feasibility in routine practice. In parallel, researchers also collaborate with health system

Health is widely recognized as shaped by social and structural conditions, yet time remains largely absent from dominant public health frameworks. This paper brings together sociological and epidemiological perspectives to argue that time is a fundamental dimension of health that has been insufficiently articulated. Rather than proposing a new determinant, it reframes time as an essential condition through which social inequalities are produced and experienced. In public health research, time is most often treated as a technical parameter, such as duration or life course stage, obscuring how i

BACKGROUND: Viral load monitoring systems enable early detection of antiretroviral therapy failure, allowing for timely interventions. Systemic gaps and infrequent viral load monitoring contribute to delayed identification of antiretroviral treatment failure, increased risk of drug resistance, and poorer health outcomes for people living with HIV.
METHODS: We conducted qualitative research to assess the delivery and quality of the MONART Trial intervention, which utilised a VL champion model comprising an upgraded TIER.net platform and a quality improvement process. The upgraded TIER.net plat

INTRODUCTION: Scorpion envenomation is a major but persistently under-recognized public health problem in tropical and subtropical regions. Its occurrence arises from complex interactions among climatic, ecological, socioeconomic, and health-system drivers. Despite sustained high incidence and expanding risk associated with climate and land-use change, these relationships remain insufficiently synthesized. Addressing this gap requires an integrative framework capable of capturing the multi-level determinants shaping scorpionism risk and outcomes.
METHODS: Drawing on Human Ecology Theory and s

Malaria and HIV remain two of the most serious public health threats in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where both infections occur at disproportionately high levels. Their co-occurrence within the same populations presents a complex clinical and epidemiological challenge that con-tributes substantially to morbidity and mortality across the region. This review examines current evidence on the epidemiology of malaria and HIV co-infection in SSA, with particular attention to key risk factors and the health outcomes associated with dual infection. It also evaluates chal-lenges in the clinical managemen

Human sapovirus (HuSaV) has long occupied a peripheral position in etiological research on acute gastroenteritis. However, in the context of widespread rotavirus vaccination, the pathogen spectrum of childhood diarrhoea has been reshaped; molecular diagnostics have continued to evolve; and evidence from birth cohorts and environmental surveillance has accumulated. Together, these developments have prompted a systematic reassessment of the public health significance of HuSaV in childhood diarrhoea, outbreaks in childcare facilities and schools, asymptomatic infection, and persistent infection i

Diabetic foot ulcers are among the most severe complications of diabetes mellitus, disproportionately affecting populations in low- and middle-income countries. Digital health technologies have emerged as promising tools for prevention, diagnosis, and management; however, their effectiveness, usability, and applicability within public health systems remain insufficiently defined. This systematic review aimed to critically synthesize the clinical effectiveness, perceived usability, and methodological quality of digital interventions for the care of individuals with diabetes-related foot ulcers.

Water shortage and contamination is a problem worldwide, impacting the human health. This research provides a comprehensive assessment of water quality and its possible impact on public health in San Luis Potosi, a region in Mexico facing critical water challenges. Throughout the study of various pollutant sources, the contaminants were identified and analyzed. The study focuses on four contaminants; fluoride, zinc, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and arsenic, which are prevalent in the region's water sources. By analyzing water samples from 28 locations over an 8-year period and correlating the

BACKGROUND: Cholera remains a significant public health challenge in Africa, where outbreaks routinely strain public health and healthcare systems. Cholera surveillance time series data could be used to inform the efficient distribution of resources like oral cholera vaccine (OCV) and emergency response personnel, spur research on the impacts of different cholera control activities, and investigate longer-term epidemiologic patterns in cholera dynamics in this region. However, public reporting of cholera surveillance data historically has been sporadic and often limited to outbreak periods, th

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of death worldwide, with carotid atherosclerosis accounting for 10-20% of cases. In Brazil, the Public Health System provides care for roughly two-thirds of the population. No studies, however, have analysed large-scale results of carotid bifurcation surgery in Brazil.
METHODS: This study aimed to describe rates of carotid artery stenting (CAS) and carotid endarterectomy (CEA) performed between 2008 and 2019 in the country through web scraping of publicly available databases.
RESULTS: Between 2008 and 2019, 37,424 carotid bifurcation revascularization pr

Formaldehyde (FA), a hazardous substance with carcinogenicity and mutagenicity, necessitates sensitive and accurate detection methods for protecting public health and the environment. While numerous reviews have explored FA fluorescent probes, the current literature predominantly emphasizes biological systems, leaving a gap in addressing FA's roles in environmental monitoring and food safety. This review discusses recognition mechanisms for FA detection, including 2-aza-Cope rearrangement, methylenehydrazine reaction, formimine formation, and other mechanisms. Furthermore, this review undersco
