We examined developmental differences in smooth pursuit eye tracking proficiency in a large sample of preadolescent, adolescent, and adult males. Smooth pursuit was quantified using general measures of oculomotor functioning and by examining the frequency and dynamic characteristics of specific saccadic events. Examination of age effects using general measures indicated that, by late adolescence, the smooth pursuit system reached adult levels of functioning. No significant differences were found between the adolescent and adult groups on most global measures. However, both groups had better ey

We compared horizontal eye movements (visually guided saccades, antisaccades, and smooth pursuit) in control subjects (n = 14) and patients with three forms of autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxias type I: spinocerebellar ataxias 1 and 2 (SCA1, n = 11; SCA2, n = 10) and SCA3/Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) (n = 16). In SCA1, saccade amplitude was significantly increased, resulting in hypermetria. The smooth pursuit gain was decreased. In SCA2, saccade velocity was markedly decreased. The percentage of errors in antisaccades was greatly increased and was significantly correlated with age at diseas

Smooth ocular tracking of a moving visual stimulus comprises a range of responses that encompass the ocular following response (OFR), a pre-attentive, short-latency mechanism, and smooth pursuit, which directs the retinal fovea at the moving stimulus. In order to determine how interdependent these two forms of ocular tracking are, we studied vertical OFR in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a parkinsonian disorder in which vertical smooth pursuit is known to be impaired. We measured eye movements of 9 patients with PSP and 12 healthy control subjects. Subjects viewed vertically moving sine

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for the modulation of smooth pursuit eye movements provides an ideal model for investigating sensorimotor integration. Within neural networks subserving smooth pursuit, visual area V5 is a core hub where visual motion information is integrated with oculomotor control. Here, we applied personalized tDCS explicitly targeting individual V5 in healthy human participants using algorithmic optimization informed by functional magnetic resonance imaging and combined electro- and magnetoencephalography. We hypothesized subtle modulation of sensorimotor int

The analysis of motion perception historically has included efferent as well as afferent mechanisms to account for the perception of motion during eye movement. The application of efferent mechanisms to motion perception has been limited, however, by several illusions which are apparently inconsistent with the notion that oculomotor mechanisms contribute to motion perception. An alternative account is presented of the manner in which efference may contribute to the perception of motion. It is proposed that distinct smooth eye-movement systems contribute differentially to object motion percepti

Smooth pursuit, optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were studied in four patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia (two with bilateral and two with unilateral lesions). Horizontal smooth pursuit by an adducting eye on the side of a medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) lesion was normal in three of four patients; vertical pursuit was abnormal in all four. The horizontal VOR gain of slow components made by an adducting eye on the side of an MLF lesion was normal in all four patients. The vertical VOR gain was decreased in the two patients tested. It is concluded th

In obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a dysfunction of neuronal circuits involving prefrontal areas and the basal ganglia is discussed that implies specific oculomotor deficits. Performance during reflexive and predictive saccades, antisaccades and predictive smooth pursuit was compared between patients with OCD (n=22), patients with schizophrenia (n=21) and healthy subjects (n=24). Eye movements were recorded by infrared reflection oculography. In both patient groups, higher frequencies of anticipatory saccades with reduced amplitudes in the predictive saccade task were observed. Additional

The cerebellum is known to participate in visually guided eye movements. The cerebellar uvula receives projections from pontine nuclei that have been implicated in visual motion processing and the generation of smooth pursuit. Single-unit and lesion studies were conducted to determine how the uvula might further process these input signals. Purkinje cells and input fibers were recorded during a variety of visual and oculomotor paradigms. Most Purkinje cells were modulated in either an excitatory or inhibitory fashion by prolonged, horizontal optokinetic drum rotation. A small proportion of cel

The head impulse-nystagmus-test of skew (+ hearing) or HINTS+ exam is a well-established clinical bedside test used in evaluating whether patients with the acute vestibular syndrome have features concerning for a central etiology (e.g., stroke). There are other components of the ocular motor exam that are helpful in the acute setting, including smooth pursuit and saccades. We discuss the anatomy and physiology of the saccade and smooth pursuit pathways from the cortex to the infratentorial region in the context of anterior and posterior circulation strokes in general but with a particular emph

The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of pathological types of smooth-pursuit and saccadic movements in different localizations of vestibular lesions. We tested 112 patients using videonystagmography. The smooth pursuit was appreciated qualitatively on the basis of Malecki's patterns. We analyzed the saccadic movements taking three parameters into consideration: latency, velocity, and accuracy. The patients suffered from posterior cranial fossa lesions, supratentorial damage, and peripheral vestibular disorders. We discovered that testing of smooth pursuit and saccades was very he

In a dynamic environment, we seek to enhance behavioral responses by anticipating future events. Previous studies have shown that the probability distribution of the timing of future events could shape our expectation of event timing; furthermore, the modulation of alpha oscillation is known to be a critical neural factor. However, a link between the modulation of alpha oscillation by temporal expectation and single neural activity is missing. In this study, we investigated how temporal expectation modulated frontal neural activities and behavioral reaction time by recording neural activity fr

Visual information about a moving object is obtained by accurate tracking with the eyes using the smooth pursuit system, which must interact with the vestibular system during head movement. Such pursuit-vestibular interactions require calculation of gaze (i.e., eye in space) in order to match eye velocity in space to actual target velocity, using vestibular, retinal-image velocity, and eye-velocity information. To understand the role the frontal eye fields (FEFs) play in pursuit-vestibular interactions, we examined responses of pursuit-related neurons near the arcuate sulcus in head-stabilized

This study used eye tracking movement tests to examine the relationships between frontal field functions and clinical features. Smooth pursuit and voluntary saccadic eye movements were recorded and analyzed in 34 delusional disorder (DD) patients and in 40 normal subjects. The DD group differed significantly from the group of normal subjects in some eye tracking performances. As reported in our previous study (Gambini et al., 1993), DD patients showed abnormalities of voluntary saccadic eye movements. In this study, we also found abnormal smooth pursuit eye movements, indicating a cerebral dys

INTRODUCTION: Deceleration of vertical saccades, an early and characteristic finding of Niemann-Pick Type C (NP-C), may help diagnosis. Our aim in this study was to demonstrate the role of video-oculography (VOG), in the differential diagnosis of ataxia syndromes, particularly of NP-C, using this technique in the evaluation of saccadic velocity and smooth pursuit gain of ataxia patients.
METHODS: We recruited consecutive 50 ataxia patients and 50 healthy control subjects who were age and sex-matched with the patient group. Saccadic eye movements and smooth pursuit eye movements for different

To determine whether there are oculomotor abnormalities in motor neuron disease (MND), electro-oculographic recordings were performed prospectively in 16 MND patients and the results compared with age-matched healthy controls. Parameters analysed included random and fixed saccades (latency, velocity and accuracy), smooth pursuit (gain, total harmonic distortion and number of saccadic intrusions) and optokinetic nystagmus (maximal and mean slow component velocity). Increased saccadic latencies and decreased smooth pursuit gain were the main alterations in the MND group. Correlation with clinica

Smooth pursuit eye movements change the retinal image motion of objects in the visual field. To enable an observer to perceive the motion of these objects veridically, the visual system has to compensate for the effects of the eye movements. The occurrence of the Filehne-illusion (illusory motion of a stationary object during smooth pursuit) shows that this compensation is not always perfect. The amplitude of the illusion appears to decrease with increasing presentation durations of the stationary object. In this study we investigated whether presentation duration has the same effect when an o

Ocular smooth pursuit and fixation are typically viewed as separate systems, yet there is evidence that the brainstem fixation system inhibits pursuit. Here we present behavioral evidence that the fixation system modulates pursuit behavior outside of conscious awareness. Human observers (male and female) either pursued a small spot that translated across a screen, or fixated it as it remained stationary. As shown previously, pursuit trials potentiated the oculomotor system, producing anticipatory eye velocity on the next trial before the target moved that mimicked the stimulus-driven velocity.

This study developed a tablet PC-based eye movement assessment application and conducted a pilot investigation to explore whether tablet-based ocular motor metrics demonstrate functional sensitivity to variations in conventional visual function parameters. Twenty-three healthy adults (10 males, 13 females; mean age: 24.41 ± 1.91 years) without a history of ocular disease performed smooth pursuit and saccadic eye movement tests at three difficulty levels. For exploratory analysis, participants were stratified into above- and below-mean groups based on conventional visual function test results.

Brain regions frequently contribute to the control of a range of behaviors. To understand how a brain area controls multiple behaviors, we examined how the frontal eye field (FEF) encodes different eye movements by recording the activity of 1,200 neurons during smooth pursuit, pursuit suppression, and saccade tasks in two female Macaca fascicularis monkeys. Single neurons tended to respond on all tasks. In the absence of task-specific clusters, we analyzed the relationships in directional preference between tasks. The tuning curves during the pursuit and suppression tasks were strongly correla

PURPOSE: Strabismus in human infants is linked strongly to nasotemporal asymmetries of smooth pursuit, but many features of this co-morbidity are unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine how the duration of early-onset strabismus (or timeliness of repair) affects the severity of pursuit asymmetries in a primate model.
METHODS: Binocular image decorrelation was imposed on infant macaques by fitting them with prism goggles on day 1 of life. The goggles were removed after 3 weeks (n=2), 12 weeks (n=2) or 24 weeks (n=3), emulating surgical repair of strabismus in humans at 3, 12, and 2
