In vitro characterization of the novel H3N1 reassortant influenza viruses from quail.

Quail is considered as an intermediate host for generation of the novel reassortant influenza A viruses (IAVs). In this study, we evaluated the replication ability of the three novel H3N1 reassortant viruses recovered from pandemic H1N1 2009 (pH1N1) and duck H3N2 (dkH3N2) co-infected quail generated from our previous study in embryonated chicken eggs, mammalian (MDCK) and human lung derived (A549) cells. Our study demonstrated that all of the reassortant viruses replicated efficiently in avian and mammalian cells, albeit with slightly lower titers than the parental viruses. Of note, all of the

Methamphetamine impairs sexual motivation but not sexual performance in male Japanese quail.

The present study investigated the effects of chronic pre-exposure to methamphetamine on sexual motivation and performance in male Japanese quail. Quail were pre-exposed to methamphetamine (1.0 or 3.0 mg/kg ip) or saline (ip) once daily for 10 days and locomotor activity was measured. After a 10 day washout period, sexual motivation was measured in a straight-arm runway with visual access to a female at one end. Three to 5 hr after sexual motivation tests, males were allowed to copulate with a receptive female quail and copulatory behavior was assessed. Tests were conducted once per day for 10

Mutations in SLC45A2 cause plumage color variation in chicken and Japanese quail.

S*S (Silver), S*N (wild type/gold), and S*AL (sex-linked imperfect albinism) form a series of alleles at the S (Silver) locus on chicken (Gallus gallus) chromosome Z. Similarly, sex-linked imperfect albinism (AL*A) is the bottom recessive allele at the orthologous AL locus in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). The solute carrier family 45, member 2, protein (SLC45A2), previously denoted membrane-associated transporter protein (MATP), has an important role in vesicle sorting in the melanocytes. Here we report five SLC45A2 mutations. The 106delT mutation in the chicken S*AL allele results in a

Embryology of congenital ventriculo-coronary communications: a study on quail-chick chimeras.

Ventriculo-coronary arterial communications are rare congenital heart defects which have been explained traditionally on the basis of abnormal persistence of such communications found in the normal developing heart. Recent studies, however, have suggested that these embryonic communications might be an incidental finding rather than a normal feature. Thus, it has been suggested that congenital ventriculo-coronary communications do not represent remnants of normal embryonic vessels, but rather represent acquired lesions. In the present study, hearts were constructed in embryonic chicks in which

The circadian nature of melatonin secretion in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

Plasma melatonin concentrations were measured in Japanese quail held under different photoperiods and constant darkness (< 1 lux). When subjected to LD6:18 (6 hr light: 18 hr darkness), levels rose approximately 2 hr after lights-off, attained a peak level 8 hr after lights off, and subsequently declined to low daytime levels before the next lights-on signal. This generated a distinct daily rhythm in melatonin secretion with a duration of approximately 13 h. On exposing quail to a range of photoperiods, containing 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, or 20 hr of light per day, the onset of melatonin secr

Heritable susceptibility to environmentally induced glaucoma in several mutants of Japanese quail.

We compared albino (aI), dilute (aID), and wild-type (AI+) quail in their ocular responses to continuous light, the rearing condition that brings on light-induced avian glaucoma (LIAG) in domestic chickens. At age 3 months, all quail kept under 24L/OD showed the retarded corneal growth and corneal flattening characteristic of LIAG. Unlike chickens, quail did not suffer pathological eye enlargement during the early growing period. However, by 6 months of age, 24L/OD albinos showed an almost 20% increase in eye weight compared with 12L/12D albinos. The increase in eye weight for 24L/OD dilutes a

Intestinal cryptosporidiosis and reovirus isolation from bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) with enteritis.

An acute enteric disease of young pen-raised bobwhite quails was studied. Affected quails had white, watery diarrhea accompanied by dehydration and subsequent death. Mortality from hatch to 17 days of age ranged from 30 to 45% in the three flocks examined. Small intestines were thin-walled and distended with fluid and gas. Microscopic lesions in the intestinal tract consisted of villus atrophy, villus fusion, and sloughing of cells at the tip of the villi in duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Cryptosporidium sp. and reovirus were identified in affected quails.

Effects of low intensity red light on testicular recrudescence in Japanese quail.

Experiments were conducted to determine if sighted and blind plumage color mutants of Japanese quail elicit comparable testicular recrudescence when exposed to long daily photoperiods of low intensity red light. Quail exhibiting testicular regression after exposure to 8 hr of light daily for several weeks were blinded via bilateral ocular enucleation. A control group was not enucleated. Two light intensities, 1.4 and 2.8 lx, were applied to half of the birds in each group during a 16 hr daily photoperiod for several weeks. Enucleated birds and birds under the 2.8 lx intensity had greater testi

Growth curve and distribution of Rous sarcoma virus (Bryan) in Japanese quail.

On primary infection with the Bryan strain of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV), the growth curve of the virus in the brain of Japanese quail was similar to that observed in chicks and turkey poults. Infectious virus disappeared from the brain after inoculation. After an eclipse period during which no virus was detectable, infectious virus began to appear at 2 days and reached maximal titers in the brain samples at 7 days after inoculation. When Japanese quail were infected intracerebrally with RSV, relatively high titers of virus were recovered from brain tissue but not from liver, lung, kidney, or bl

Beyond Chondrocytes: Progenitor-like Cells Drive Cartilage Development in the Quail Embryo Model.

Cartilage regeneration remains a significant challenge due to the tissue's avascular nature and limited chondrocyte regenerative capacity. While mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) offer therapeutic promise, their specific role in cartilage remains undefined. This study characterized mesenchymal-like cells in quail embryo cartilage using histochemical staining, immunohistochemistry, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A unique population of cartilage-resident progenitor-like cells with flattened, migratory morphologies was identified. These cells co-expressed stemness markers (CD117, CD34

Maternal reproductive precocity shapes immunometabolic responses to lipopolysaccharide challenge in Japanese quail offspring.

Productive efficiency in laying breeders is influenced by genetic and physiological factors, but it remains unclear whether maternal reproductive precocity programs distinct inflammatory responses in the offspring. This study evaluated the effects of maternal precocity on productive performance, immunological parameters, and the intestinal transcriptomic profile of Japanese quail offspring challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). A design with two maternal groups was used (early-maturing: reaching 95% lay between weeks 14-15; and late-maturing: between weeks 17-18), and the offspring were eit

Hepatic Transcriptomic Responses to Ethinylestradiol in Embryonic Japanese Quail and Double-Crested Cormorant.

Understanding species differences in sensitivity to toxicants is a critical issue in ecotoxicology. We recently established that double-crested cormorant (DCCO) embryos are more sensitive than Japanese quail (JQ) to the developmental effects of ethinylestradiol (EE2). We explored how this difference in sensitivity between species is reflected at a transcriptomic level. The EE2 was dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide and injected into the air cell of eggs prior to incubation at nominal concentrations of 0, 3.33, and 33.3 µg/g egg weight. At midincubation (JQ 9 days; DCCO 16 days), livers were colle

Retinal Development in a Precocial Bird Species, the Quail (Coturnix coturnix, Linnaeus 1758).

The quail (Coturnix coturnix, Linnaeus 1758), a notable model used in developmental biology, is a precocial bird species in which the processes of retinal cell differentiation and retinal histogenesis have been poorly studied. The purpose of the present research is to examine the retinogenesis in this bird species immunohistochemically and compare the results with those from previous studies in precocial and altricial birds. We found that the first PCNA-negative nuclei are detected at Stage (St) 21 in the vitreal region of the neuroblastic layer, coinciding topographically with the first αTubA

Molecular and pathogenicity of infectious bronchitis virus (Gammacoronavirus) in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) infection is highly infectious respiratory disease in poultry industry with significant economic importance. The prevalence of IBV in quail industry in Malaysia was not well documented; therefore, its actual role in the epidemiology of the disease is relatively unknown. This study was to determine the susceptibility of Japanese quail, as one of the species in commercial poultry industry, toward IBV. In addition, it will also give a potential impact on the overall health management in the quail industry even though it had been established that quail are resista

Metabolic effects of quail eggs in diabetes-induced rats: comparison with chicken eggs.

BACKGROUND: Quail eggs as a food item have recently been introduced into the diet of some Cameroonians. These eggs are being sold in local markets, but with many unfounded health claims. One claim is that quail eggs can reduce blood glucose levels in diabetics. It was therefore necessary to evaluate the effect of consuming quail eggs on blood glucose levels, lipid profiles, and oxidative stress parameters in diabetes-induced rats. METHODS: Twenty Wistar rats weighing, on average, 250 g were divided into four groups of five rats each. Group 1 consisted of rats with normal blood glucose, and th

Comparison of Muscle Fiber and Meat Quality Characteristics in Different Japanese Quail Lines.

The aim of this study was to compare the growth performance, fiber characteristics of the pectoralis major muscle, and meat quality characteristics in the heavy weight (HW) and random bred control (RBC) quail lines and genders. The HW male exhibited more than two times greater body (245.7 vs 96.1 g, p<0.05) and pectoralis major muscle (PMW; 37.1 vs 11.1 g, p<0.05) weights compared to the RBC female. This growth performance in the HW line was associated with a greater muscle fiber area (1,502 vs 663.0 μm(2), p<0.001) compared to the RBC line. Greater muscle mass of the HW male was accompanied b
