INTRODUCTION: Radial nerve palsies with humeral shaft fractures have historically been treated with expectant management. A previous systematic review by Shao et al, based on studies published from 1964 to 2004, purported no difference in the rate of recovery between patients treated with early surgical intervention versus expectant treatment. However, the authors combined expectant treatment to include patients treated nonsurgically and those with delayed surgery. To better understand the effect of surgery and its timing on radial nerve recovery, an updated analysis was performed with stricte

Tendon transfers are used to restore balance and function to a paralyzed, injured, or absent neuromuscular-motor unit. In general, tendon transfer is indicated for restoration of muscle function after peripheral nerve injury, injury to the brachial plexus or spinal cord, or irreparable injury to tendon or muscle. The goal is to improve the balance of a neurologically impaired hand. In the upper extremity, tendon transfers are most commonly used to restore function following injury to the radial, median, and ulnar nerves. An understanding of the general principles of tendon transfer is importan

PURPOSE: The structure of the proximal margin of the superficial layer of the supinator muscle is of high interest to many researches. Its tendinous appearance, called the arcade of Frohse, may be clinically important because of its close relationship to the deep branch of the radial nerve passing beneath it and is considered to be the cause of several syndromes. Given the importance of this structure, we aimed to provide a comprehensive and evidence-based review with meta-analytic techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The meta-analysis was performed in adherence to the PRISMA guidelines. Three

This case report describes the course of a 26-year-old male who developed a dense motor palsy of the radial nerve after receiving a seasonal influenza vaccination. The palsy developed within 12 to 16 hours of inoculation and demonstrated no clinical recovery until 5 months postinjury. Electromyographic and nerve conduction studies obtained at six weeks postinjury were consistent with complete motor denervation. Sensory function was preserved. The injury was successfully treated nonoperatively with physical therapy and wrist splinting, and the palsy gradually resolved over the next several mont

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism and feasibility of the supinator syndrome evoked embitterment test from anatomy and clinic.
METHODS: 25 cases of The supinator syndrome were reviewed. 18 of them were male and 7 were female. Drop finger deformation were apparent in 25 cases and The supinator syndrome evoked embitterment test was positive for All patients. Operative neurolysis was done in 8 cases, conservation treatment 17 cases; 92 cadaver upper extremities were dissected for a study the relationship between supinator tunnel and posterior interosseous nerve.
RESULTS: 22 cases had been foll

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the choice of intervention time and operation mode between nerve and tendon transfer for the treatment of radial nerve palsy (RNP).
METHODS: 46 RNP patients underwent nerve transfer (n = 22) and tendon transfer (n = 24). The intraoperative blood loss, main incision length, operation duration, and length of hospital stay and follow-up period of patients in these two groups were recorded and compared. The range of motion (ROM) of the elbow, wrist, fingers, and thumb, the hand grip and pinch strength, the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) an

INTRODUCTION: The feasibility of endoscopically assisted decompression of the superficial radial nerve at the midportion and distal forearm was assessed.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: After a 3 cm longitudinal skin incision at the Tinel's sign at the forearm, the subcutaneous tissue is dissected until forearm fascia is detected. The fascia is opened cautiously under direct visualization and the superficial radial nerve is identified. Blunt forceps mobilize the subcutaneous tissue upon the fascia before the illuminated speculum is inserted. Then further dissection of the fascia is performed proximally u

Radial nerve injury results in loss of wrist, finger, and thumb extension. Traditionally, radial nerve palsies that fail to recover spontaneously have been reconstructed with tendon transfers or nerve grafts. Nerve transfers are a novel approach to the surgical management of Sunderland grade IV and V radial nerve injuries. We describe our technique for median to radial nerve transfers. In this procedure, the flexor digitorum superficialis nerve is transferred to the extensor carpi radialis brevis nerve for wrist extension, and the flexor carpi radialis nerve is transferred to the posterior int

BACKGROUND: The anti-tumour necrosis factor [TNF] monoclonal antibody, infliximab, is commonly prescribed in both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Neurological side effects such as optic neuritis are well recognised, although not as frequently seen as hypersensitivity and serious infections.
CASE: We present a case of peripheral neuropathy in a young man on infliximab therapy for ulcerative colitis. This presented as an asymmetrical and slowly progressive weakness in his right upper limb, severely impacting on function. Investigations confirmed a diagnosis of multifocal motor neuropath

Prior reports of handcuff-related neuropathies have been retrospective or small series of cases selected for their unusual electrophysiological or historical features. We conducted a prospective 27-month study at a large, urban, teaching hospital of all patients with a complaint of hand numbness, weakness, or paresthesias attributed to overtightened handcuffs. Forty-one patients were evaluated clinically, and electrodiagnostic testing was performed on 18. In the group with electrodiagnostic testing, neuropathies due to overtightened handcuffs were detected in 22 superficial radial, 12 median,

There is still no gold standard for the treatment of humeral shaft fractures. This might be attributed to the fact that several commonly used treatment methods have shown good clinical results. A bimodal age distribution of humeral shaft fractures with frequency peaks between 20 and 30 years old and above 60 years old is reported. Decision making for conservative or operative treatment depends not only on the injury pattern but is also dependent on individual patient needs. Currently available operative techniques include antegrade and retrograde interlocking medullary nailing as well as the u

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article addresses relevant peripheral neuroanatomy, clinical presentations, and diagnostic findings in common entrapment neuropathies involving the median, ulnar, radial, and fibular (peroneal) nerves.
RECENT FINDINGS: Entrapment neuropathies are a common issue in general neurology practice. Early diagnosis and effective management of entrapment mononeuropathies are essential in preserving limb function and maintaining patient quality of life. Median neuropathy at the wrist (carpal tunnel syndrome), ulnar neuropathy at the elbow, radial neuropathy at the spiral groove,…
